  1. In a word, 'yes'. Transcoding a high bit rate 1080p MKV down to 4Mbps 720p for my phone would run at 1.1x realtime on the old Celeron. The same transcode ran at over 12x realtime on the Xeon. Considering that the Xeon is worth nearly £200 on it's own, the T20 is a bit of a bargain. I have two vSphere datastores, one on the 250GB SSD and the other on the 750GB WD Black HDD. I host my 'production' VMs on the SSD and clone backups and run test VMs on the HDD. I suppose I could mount the datastores from DSM and back them up to my data volume (I think I'll try that later). I looked at various 3rd party backup solutions for vSphere, but the free versions are all limited in some way (only two backups, not compatible with DSM, etc). I've started using VMware's free vCentre Converter to manually backup VMs as clones (btw, make sure you Google how to disable SSL if you use this tool - it speeds things up a lot!).
  2. For all the usual stuff the E-350 is fine (I even run a C-70). As stated above, transcoding will be the bottleneck. More general, a A4-5300 is great, higher models even better.

I thought about buying the N3700 as well, but 30€ difference (70 vs 100) was unjustified for me, the difference being only the boost frequency (for the most part you will stay at 1.6GHz or less, unless you are heavily transcoding) and a slightly better GPU (which is mainly useless for a NAS). No brainer after a bit of research, and the reason is still valid after trying it.
  4. It cannot set itself to turbo mode, but normal mode has speedstep enabled anyway, so it's adjusting frequency depending on the needs. You can control fans in BIOS, but in the next xpenoboot, there are supposed to be some fan drivers, so we might be able to do it in DSM. N3150 is more than enough, if you are not doing some CPU intensive work. I have never went over 50%, even when Serviio is transcoding videos for me.

I started up a plex movie that was transcoding for a few minutes, and the CPU temp toggled between 60-61C. edit: it's not a thorough test, but it's all I can do from work, teamviewing into desktop.   7. Hi, ich habe ein G4400 + ASRock H170 mini ITX Board. Der Stromverbauch kann ich mal messen, wird aber nächste Woche. Welche Boardgröße kannst du denn in dein Gehäuse einbauen? benötigst du Transcoding z.b. für Plex?
  8. I can also recommend using ESXi: I use multiple VMs since not every package is running smoothly (or with best performance) on Xpenology. Plex requires a lot when transcoding multiple streams and offers better performance on it's own VM. I also moved transmission and other services out to their own virtual machines due to better performance and a lot more features.
  9. As usual: It depends. First, DSM does not benefit of hw accelartion of the gpu. That means everything is de-/en-/transcoded by the cpu. The CPU is qiet weak, but low resolution and low bitrade transcoding would be possible I guess. To compare, I had run a athlon 5350, that have the double of cores and a little highe frequency and transcoding of a 720p TV stream to 600p + 1500kbps causes 60-80% CPU load. A SD TV stream only 30 to 50 %. I doubt that a E-350 would get along with HD-video. I wouldn't concern the disk array speed, every low budget hardware is able to bring gigabit ethernet to its limits.
  10. log into the front end of plex and see what is going on. I'm willing to bet it's transcoding or indexing some content for you.
  11. I'm not saying my build is the best (everything is subjective obviously...) But I just got done doing 2x identical builds with the NSC-800 with the hardware I linked earlier. Both are rock solid and low power. Drive spindown works flawlessly as well (hibernates the drives after 10 min's of inactivity) I will say that the more ram you throw in a system the better transfer speed you will have to begin with, as it throws everything into swap to start. I've got 16GB ram in my main NAS and I can copy entire .iso's across my network at 108 MB/S from start to finish due to the ram size. Lower ram (say 2 or 4GB) will peak out on swap and then drop down to the 70's or 80's and then pick back up due to I/O on the card. The Asrock SoC I linked earlier is really low power and is also a quad core. It also only requires a 24pin power connection to run (no 4x / 6x/ or 8x power for CPU) I'm not an AMD Fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but almost every SoC board I found from Intel supports only a 1x or 4x slot on the board. Only the full CPU intel boards support 16x slots on an ITX board. If you want SoC and want to run a full size expansion SAS card, your Intel options are quite limited.   12. Hmm.... A lot of pointers for me to reconsider my build... My intention was basically to "upgrade" my current Asustor 202TE to something slightly more powerful with capacity of 8 drives. @brantje: Actually, i'm not sure. I'm using my current Asustor 202TE as storage, torrenting, and also as a PMS (although I've set it NOT to do any transcoding even for remote access/viewing). Not sure if it would matter in relation to speed factor? @redpineapple: Ok..................... Now you REALLY have got me thinking REALLY hard... Ok guys, know what? Let's just "build" one for me, if you don't mind.. I'm looking for as low power consumption as possible although I would definitely put it to "sleep" mode when i'm not using it and I'll wake it up via WoL when needed. Also, it'll have 4x WD Red 3TB for a start, with expansion to a total of 8 drives over time. An alternative that I've looked at although I'm not too sure if it's worth it: CPU: i3-6100 MoBo: (?) Mini-ITX PSU: SilverStone 300W PSU RAM: 1x4gb Kingston 1600mhz DDR3L PCI-E: LSI 9211? Case: NSC-800 Or just go with a similar build as yours(best bang for buck for my usage?) + a separate HTPC for my PMS?
  13. Regarding the Plex server (Version 0.9.16.3) and LG TV clients (Version 2.5.3?) seems to work fine with transcoder option in automatic. If you disable DTS convert option it will play anything without problems (via Wifi, too). I did have problems playing content from LG TV and using DLNA. I disabled transcoding under Media Server - control panel in DSM, as soon as I disabled the video transcoding no more problems. I have the MediaCAST (NOT WebOS) in both LG TVs. The problem with android client is that is free only for a limited time, then you must go for the pass, but I have to say that 720p on my Sony Xperia Z3 using plex client looks impressive. My only complaint is how slow the client is for LG TVs, I guess the small CPU inside suffers just navigating menus, or maybe the wireless, but I get fluid 1080p video on my TVs using no wires.   14. Hi there, So I'd like to build my own media server in order to stream to my TV (using Plex). I picked a hardware configuration but since I'm new to this, I want to make sure that it will work fine with xpenology. What I want is something capable of transcoding 1 or 2 1080p streams, and to be power efficient (meaning it consumes as little as possible). Here is the parts i picked : CPU: Intel Core i3-6100T 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: MSI B150M PRO-VDH Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard or ASRock H170M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory Storage: Western Digital Green 4TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive x2 (3T or 4T i'm not decided yet) Case: Fractal Design Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower Case (case depends on the MoBo) Power Supply: Corsair CSM 450W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply but really not sure what power to take Can anyone tells me if this will work and if there is improvment to make ?   15. Transcoding is not a memory intensive application, you don't need that much memory. For me, I use Asrock C2550D4i (Atom C2550) which is already capable to handle 2 x 1080p, so I am sure your i3 will work, just a little bit more power consumption Western Digital Green....try to avoid using them as RAID.
  16. Moin, ich kann dir bei Weitem nicht all deine Fragen beantworten, aber schonmal einige. Anwendungsbereich bei mir: Als Pakete läuft nichts Besonderes außer XPE selbst (mit den Optionen, die es so bietet) und Plex. Nun ist in meinem Cube nur ein Celeron verbaut, aber - was soll ich sagen - er bekommt alles gewuppt. Selbst das Transcoding eines 1080p Streifens macht er mit. Für einen zweiten transkodierten 1080p Stream reicht es dann allerdings icht mehr. Wenn du mehr als einen 1080p Stream haben möchtest, dann brauchst du also eine dickere CPU (Pentium, i3, i5 oder Xeon ... Sockel 1155 halt). Grob kann man sagen, dass man pro 1080p Stream einen Passmark-Score von 2000 Punkten braucht. Hierzu eine kleine Liste aller CPUs, die man meines Wissens nach einfach einbauen kann ohne groß was an der Kühlung zu ändern: Celeron G1610T ~ 2240 Punkte Pentium G2020T ~ 2530 Punkte Core i3-3240 ~ 4320 Punkte Xeon E3-1220L V2 ~ 4560 Punkte Xeon E3-1265L V2 ~ 8400 Punkte Ein CPU-Tausch scheint wirklich sehr einfach (noch nicht gemacht, gibt aber viele Youtube-Videos zu). Celeron, Pentium und Core i3 bekommt man beim Online-Auktionshaus des Vertrauens für Preise bis 100 Euro. Die Xeons sind fast nicht zu bekommen und liegen preislich um die 400 Euro ... (no further comment). Zum Thema RAM. Bei mir waren von Anfang an 4GB verbaut, die ich ihn noch nie hab voll nutzen sehen. Ich glaube das höchste der Gefühle waren mal eine Auslastung von 25-30%. Allerdings nutze ich auch keine Extrawürste wie ZFS und andere speicherintensiven Anwendungen. Zum Thema Preise der Komplett-Systeme ... keine Ahnung wie die da kalkulieren. Wenn du weißt wie rum man einen Schraubendreher hält: 189 Euro Celeron-System 100 Euro Core i3 -------------------------------- 289 Euro Gesamt (ohne die 1TB Platte, die du ja anscheinend nicht brauchst) Wäre also eine Kostenersparnis von knappen 290 Euro im Vergleich zum Komplettsystem (~ 579 Euro) zu 1. Ich hab seit einiger Zeit dieses Modell: HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8, Celeron G1610T, 4GB RAM (819185-421) ab € 189,90 http://geizhals.de/hp-proliant-microser ... 22637.html zu 2. Darin ist eine Micro-SD-Karte von der ich XPEnology boote und 4 WD reds 2x2TB (Raid 1) und 2x6TB (Raid 0) Zusätzlich hängt noch eine 1TB und eine 4TB USB3 Platte dran. Auf den 2TB Platten liegen meine wichtigen Daten im gespiegelten Raid 1, das wiederum täglich auf die 4TB USB Platte gesichert wird. Auf den 6TB Platten liegen meine Medien, keine weitere Sicherung. Die 1TB USB Platte dient als Plex Transcoding-Cache-Volumen. Keine Ahnung ob das was bringt, aber die Platte lag noch herrenlos rum. zu 3. Ich habe jegliche Energiespar-Optionen bei mir abgeschaltet und das System läuft dauerhaft 24/7 ... den Platten zuliebe. Allerdings wenn du ein Raid Level 0 über zwei Platten fährst ... dann werden sobald Daten gelesen oder geschrieben werden beide Platten laufen, weil alle Daten verteilt auf beiden Platten liegen. Es wird gleichzeitig auf beide Platten geschrieben und auch gelesen ... daher auch der Geschwindigkeitsvorteil eines Raid0. Was du meinst ist eher ein NRAID oder SPAN ... dort wird erstmal die erste Platte voll gemacht, bevor es bei der zweiten weitergeht. Von der Ausfallsicherheit her: Raid0 (theoretisch doppelte Geschwindigkeit) -> eine Platte stirbt -> alles weg NRAID/SPAN (normale Geschwindigkeit) -> eine Platte stirbt -> Daten der zweiten Platten noch da Wie es sich bei NRAID oder SPAN mit SpinDown verhält weiß ich nicht. Theoretisch sollte einem SpinDown aber nichts im Weg stehen. zu 4. Hab ich zwar keine Erfahrung mit, sollte aber auch gehen. Sei dir aber bewusst, dass ein Gen8 (weil Serverhardware die wirklich erstmal alles im System checked) nicht mal eben hochgefahren ist ... das dauert seine Zeit. Vor allem ist er für die Zeit des Hochfahrens echt nicht unhörbar. zu 5. Zu deiner Frage was Raid angeht bin ich zwar kein Profi, aber 2 verschiedene Raid-Level auf einer Platte hört sich für mich nun erstmal sehr seltsam an. Kann sein, dass das klappt, aber wieviel Sinn das ergibt weiß ich nicht. Aus dem Bauch heraus würde ich es nicht machen ... und hab es ja auch nicht gemacht, wie man oben sieht. Für die oben erwähnten gesparten 290 Euro kannst du dir dann noch 2 3TB WD reds kaufen, ein separates Raid1 reinklemmen und hast auf deinem Medien-Volumen noch mehr Platz. zu 6. Ich meine mich daran zu erinnern mal gelesen zu haben, dass DS keine optischen Laufwerke unterstützt ... kann aber hier nicht aus eigener Erfahrung berichten. Abschließend noch eine Kommentar zum Thema Preis/Leistung meiner Version. Ich heule fast immer vor Freude, wenn ich ihn sehe ... der beste 200Euro-Invest der letzten Zeit bei mir.   17. @Jauja It's very difficult to verify even with various "ipkg" tools. From my experience : Turbo is not used, CPU throttling (lower frequencies) is used. That said, I don't worry too much about it because : 1. everything is very fast including on-the-fly video transcoding (I didn't try H265 yet but H264 is not an issue at all). My network is my limit at the moment (real full duplex 1Gbits, 120 MB/sec measured from/to the NAS) 2. the power consumption of the CPU is low.

  19. Ciao theophrastus, con cosa guardi i video? Sicuramente la CPU non è abbastanza potente per il transcoding il tempo reale di alcuni video ad elevato bitrate, ma senza maggiori informazioni è difficile una risposta certa. Se usi l'unità solo come storage e vedi i video tramite player esterni (Kodi, VLC, Plex) senza transcoding non dovresti avere alcun problema (fai una prova di trasfermento file, dovresti essere su 100 MB/s).

I must thank you all for your input, lots to read up for now maybe some more questions later, I think the i5 route is key for me. and as was said earlier atom cpu's are limited in the transcoding world and not to sure if 8 cores would be supported by the Xpenology not that i was thinking of going that route. Just going to start the VMware requirements and will take more advice later. Why is it that the supported hardware list does not show suitable motherboards reading through chip controllers is a pain unless i missed something obvious.
  21. Hi there! I am about to upgrade my NAS (for now an old 2bay one) to adapt it to my needs. Some key facts: - 4bay NAS - no transcoding - encryption So the DS415+ is basically what I am looking for .. but somehow I am not ready to pay >500€ for that kind of case. The alternative would be an Skylake-based NAS that would cost me about 300€ + having the possibility to further upgrade if needed (CPU Power- and >4bay-wise). The other alternative would be the DS416j - in that case encryption is not possible .. and the CPU Power is really low end So what would you do? Get the low end DS416j? Pay the extra cash for 415+ or build your own NAS with Xpenology? I know I am in the Xpenology forums .. but I still hope to get some constructive advice. Did someone switch back to an original Synology (for what reason?)? Have you switched from an original Synology to Xpenology - why & how is the impression? Thank you in advance guys!
  22. I run the i5 mentioned in the initial post with 4gb ram. 24/7 plex with 2-3 streams simultaneously, 2 of them transcoding full HD stuff. Besides 6 cams recording permanently, timemachine and Windows backups running frequently. Only problem was the crappy Realtek driver which caused lockups with too many connections, but since the last xpenoboot version that's history and the machine works like a charm. Unlight
  23. If a main purpose is Plex i would agree with butter_fry . CPU is very important when it comes to plex and transcoding. The only way i see to never have to transcode media was if you were going to have all your media in the perfect universal format for the devices your playing it on. Most of my media is setup for my main device with high quality full audio tracks so my server will direct play to that but all my other devices have to transcode and if your cpu isnt up to the task it can be a nightmare lol
  24. When I built this box in my signature, the branch of choices you laid out looked similar to mine. Though I was looking at the C2750 (8core version). My needs were similar, but I also wanted do do some virtualization of a few preexisting servers I've got. I loved the idea of the Avodon boards, It seems like they are built with the NAS appliance in mind. the build cost would be fantastic considering you don't have to buy a CPU or an extra SATA card. But in the end, it comes down to cpu horsepower. While others may disagree, the ATOM chips just aren't there yet for what we're asking the xpenology boxes to do. Not all processes are multi threaded. Loading up one cpu intensive task on a single core can be a killer here with this chip. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu ... Hz&id=2230 <-- now look at this single thread performance. One core has nearly the same power as the entire chip. Of course you can say you can't compare Atom to i5, but we have to, this is what you're asking. My experience over the past few years with Plex tells me don't under power it. Plex is great, like the ultimate swiss army knife, it'll do anything well, some things great, others are a compromise. But the one thing that stands out, is even if you don't think you'll be transcoding all that much, you will transcode more than you think. The variety of devices and screens we ask plex to serve to demands it. Even if on paper it should be able to direct stream, sometimes it forces a transcode. My choice was a bit more clear, i knew i needed and wanted the power to do multiple streams, and multiple VMs. I needed the high single thread rating and multiple threads. Of course I don't have an that C2750 to compare, but numbers don't lie. I'm sure it does fine, but throwing more cores at an atom only makes it wider, not more powerful. I'm of a mind to spend a few dollars more and overbuild, having built servers for a living and countless PCs this is my accumulated opinion. I really want those Atom boards to work, but they just don't have enough horsepower for all the things xpenology can do. I know others will protest, but again the numbers don't lie, just make sure the numbers are right for your uses.
  25. Not sure of the term bare metal. I will be using plex but shall only be transcoding occasionally, Own Cloud is a must. but need long term storage area for photos etc virtual machine is something i am getting into. Video cam server for storage But goal is a solid array with high availability and little maintenance, So question is will my hardware run out of the box with Xpenology and be reliable.
