About Me

  1. Hey guys, So I posted on here almost a year ago asking for some build recommendations and now months later I am happy to say that I have found a great deal on a Supermicro 24 Bay rack and have been playing with it for a few weeks. I've got a lot of WD Reds ready to go as well. With that being said, I tried the trial of UnRaid for the past week and although it works, it just feels sloppy to me (previous Synology user) and now I'm having second thoughts about UnRaid vs Xpenology. My question is, is my system compatible with Xpenology? Can I run it with SHR 2 safely? I don't really care about the latest DSM updates and all, I just want to be able to use a Synology with the ability to have 24 drives and the trust that Synology gives off (If you know what I mean). Supermicro - X8DAH+-F Intel Xeon L5630 48GB ECC RAM (24GB usable right now as only one CPU is installed) LSI 9211-8i (Flashed in IT mode) SAS2 Backplane (I believe it's the BPN-SAS2-846EL1) I know it's kind of a stupid thing to ask about "stability" with basically a "hacked OS" but you guys get what I mean. If I could buy the OS straight from Synology I totally would 110%. Thanks guys!
  2. Hi I'm in the process of moving back to baremetal but I've hit a snag with reboots and shutdowns - the system won't actually do anything when requested by DSM.... Instead, I have to go through the IPMI interface to undertake the request. The motherboard was used with ESXi 6.5 up until recently and that was fine but its never had DSM on it before. Are there any issue with Supermicro X8 class motherboards and reboots/shutdowns? Thanks, Chris
  3. Hi there everyone https://www.ebay.com/itm/353218688931?hash=item523d7977a3:g:AUUAAOSw4VxhOTBz i would like to ask is this board is compatible with xpenology which version i want to create my own router and use this board as router on my network any one can help me if this board works with any synology without any problems thanks
  6. Hello everyone, I have done the setup and got Jun's loader done up with 1.03b and the DS3617xs image. on initial boot, i was able to see the device and drives and run through the installation of the PAT file. When it went to reboot, the server didnt reboot (watching the console) and upon manual reboot, it will not respond at all. i even reimaged the USB drive with the extra.lzma file and booted to that, even tried booting to the reinstall option. I cant find this machine on the network any longer. any help would be appreciated.
  7. i am using nanoboot juns 1.03b and DSM 6.2 and DS3615 on my motherboard supermicro A1SRI-2758F tell me please, intel i354 network card will work? I can't check it myself for today because i havent wired network in the office the system boots from the flash drive normally, but I'm not sure about the network card and disk controller. extra.lzma added to flash drive
  8. Hi. I've been trying to setup using loader 1.4 and DS918+ v6.2.3-25426 U3 however my onboard network isn't being seen. I installed a generic intel i210 card (igb driver) and it's being seen, but I'd really like to make use of the onboard as much as possible. The motherboard is based off an Atom c3758. The onboard NICs worked fine with TrueNAS. I edited my grub.cfg and included the MAC addesses of all 4 onboard NICs without success. (just the addon card is seen) I THINK the ixgbe driver covers x553 and when i perform a dmesg | grep Intel it does list ixgbe. Unfortunately I don't believe that driver is being loaded. So I guess my questions are these: how can I verify I have the correct drivers and they're being loaded? if I don't have them, where do I find them? (either individual driver or extra package?) how do I load them once I've got them? I really have tried searching but I've come up largely empty, thus my post. Any assistance is really appreciated!! Thanks
  9. Hello there, I am clueless on how to fix my problem. I have the following hardware: Supermicro X10SRi-F, Intel E5-1620v3, 64GB DDR4 https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/X10SRi-F using v1.04b is working like a charm. As I would like to use 10GBe networking I was trying to use loader v1.03b (DS3617xs) When using cleared HDDs I am able to complete the installation process, but the system doesn't come online afterwards. Does anybody have an idea why and how to fix it? Can I somehow provide logs? Kind regards
  12. So, the other day I was gifted an old server, based on the Supermicro X8SI6-F. It sits in a Fractal Design Define R5, that easy supports 8+ drives. As always, the first thing that came to mind, was that this could be used with XPEnology ;-) It has no problem booting Jun's 1.3b, and installing DSM 6.3.x (DS3615xs), but it insists on using the 6*Sata2(3Gb/s) as drive 1-6, before the 8*6Gb/s ports on the integrated SAS controller (IT-mode). This give me a count of 6+8=14 drives, and if I want to use them all, I will have to modify the max disk in synoinfo.conf. with the risk of "loosing" the last 2 SAS ports when updating. I was hoping I could just disable the SATA ports in BIOS, and use just the 8 SAS ports, but I found no option to do so. Now, my question to the guru's here: Can I remap the drive order in a config file (and not having it broken during updates) and keep my 8 SAS ports as drive 1-8? (and maybe use 4 of the 6 SATA ports if needed)
  13. Have just grabbed one of these on ebay, came with a 12 bay chassis with a sas backplane. I have tried the loader for 3615 and 3617 and both appear to work fine apart from once formatted the fault lights on each drive flash red continuously without reason. It has installed fine, picks up all the drives ok, just has this synchronised flashing red on all the front bays. Wondered if anyone else has come across this and knows what might be causing it??? Thanks.
  16. Hello, i have several xpen boxes up and running, all of them with less than 12 disks and worked like a charm. I used this awesome Forum as the main source of knowledge, but at my new project i stuck for several days on the same problem. But first my system infos: DSM version: DSM 6.1.7 - 15284 Loader version and model: JUN'S LOADER v1.02b - DS3615xs Installation type: BAREMETAL - Case: CSE846 Backplane: SAS846TQ - MB: Supermicro X10SRL-F - HBA: 2x LSI9207-8i IT Mode DSM is running on two SSDs connected at the onboard SATA Connectors Edit grub.cfg: SataPortMap=6488 Edit synoinfo.conf: maxdisks="26", esataportcfg="0x0", usbportcfg="0x3C000000", internalportcfg="0x3ffffff" Problem: When i plug a USB Stick in to the USB3.0 or USB2 ports on the MB they will be recognized as disk 21 in DSM, when i add a second USB Stick they will be disk 22. When i fill the System complete with 26 disks, the USB sticks will be recognized as a external device, how it should be. But after a reboot with all disks installed they will appear as disk 21+ and take the position of the real HDD. I played around with several Jun loader versions, installed it as a DS918+, as a DS3617xs with DSM 6.2.2 and DSM 6.1.x, every time the same issue. Has anyone an idea witch settings i have to change. Second trivial issue: DSM only recognized USB-Devices on the back side usb port, it ignores the internal USB-headder. Thanks in advance Phithue
  17. I successfully installed xpenology on my new supermicro but it won't read any of the drives. I have an SSD inside that it reads as a storage device but will not read any of the drives in the bays or in the USB ports in the back. I know the drives are good ive checked them in my PC and the server is reading them they spin up and blink and the BIOS show them. So synology isn't recognizing them. Please help. Juns 1.02b 3615 6.1 Drives are Seagate 8tb I also tried a toshiba 1tb This is what I have https://www.ebay.com/itm/173977893894
  18. HI guys, I received a Supermicro x10sdv-4c-tln2f for free and would like to use Xpenology on it. I am using ds3617xs loader because both use similar CPU (D1521 vs D1527). But once the bootloader printed the "... find.synology.com ... " I wasn't able to find it on the network. What should I do? I know people has success with the board using ESXi, but I rather run bare metal. I did the following 1. update pid/vid, sn, mac1 and mac2 in grub.cfg 2. change in BIOS to Legacy boot Serial-over-Lan show me nothing regard the console output. I also use the same procedure and tried ds3615xs. same thing. Please let me know how I should proceed. Thanks
  19. I notice that several users claim to be using the Supermicro X11SSL-CF mbrd with Xpenology and Jun's loaders, I can't seem to get it to work. Whilst I had success creating a DS3615_6.2 boot loader for the Supermicro X10SL7-F mbrd (which has the same i210-AT network controller as the X11SLL-CF (X10SL7-F has 6 x SATA (2xSATA3 & 4xSATA2), 8xSAS 6Gb/s, 1xSATADOM; X11SSL-CF has 6xSATA3, 8xSAS 12Gb/s, 2xSuperDOM), I have not been successful in creating a suitable DS3615_6.2 bootloader for the new board. With Jun's loader 1.03b, the system displays the boot message from the bootloader, but Synology Assistant is not finding any evidence of the system on the network. Both the X10SL7-F and the X11SSL-CF boards use the Intel i210-AT dual Gigabit LAN. Specs for the two boards are as follows: X10SL7-F Mbrd Single socket H3 (LGA 1150) supports Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 v3/v4, 4th gen. Core i3, Pentium, Celeron processors 2. Intel® C222 Express PCH 3. Up to 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz UDIMMs in 4 sockets 4. Dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports via Intel® i210AT 5. 2x SATA (6Gbps), 4x SATA (3Gbps) 6. 8x SAS2 (6Gbps) via Broadcom 2308 7. Expansion slots: 1x PCI-E 3.0 x8 (in x16), 1x PCI-E 2.0 x4 (in x8) 8. 2x USB 3.0 (1 Type-A + 1 via header) 6x USB 2.0 (4 rear + 2 via header) 9. Integrated IPMI 2.0 with KVM and Dedicated LAN 10. SATA DOM power connector support 11. VGA D-sub connector, TPM header X11SSL-CF Single socket H4 (LGA 1151) supports Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v6/v5, Intel® 7th/6th Gen. Core i3 series, Intel® Celeron® and Intel® Pentium® Intel® C232 chipset Up to 64GB Unbuffered ECC UDIMM DDR4 2400MHz; 4 DIMM slots Expansion slots: 1 PCI-E 3.0 x8 (in x16), 1 PCI-E 3.0 x4 (in x8), 1 PCI-E 3.0 x1 Dual GbE LAN with Intel® i210-AT 6 SATA3 (6Gbps) via C232; RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 8 SAS3 (12Gbps) via Broadcom® 3008 SW controller; RAID 0, 1, 10 I/O: 1 VGA, 2 COM, TPM header 2 SuperDOM with built-in power 5 USB 3.0 (2 rear, 2 via header(s), 1 Type A), 6 USB 2.0 (2 rear, 4 via header(s)) Any advice anyone can provide on this subject would be much appreciated. I am particularly interested in the following issues: 1. How the 2xSuperDOMs on the X11SSL-CF need to be addressed in the Grub.cfg (if at all relevant); 2. Necessary modifications in the following lines in Grub.cfg: set extra_args_3615='' #set extra_args_3615='earlycon=uart8250,io,0x3f8,115200n8 earlyprintk loglevel=15' set common_args_3615='syno_hdd_powerup_seq=0 HddHotplug=0 syno_hw_version=DS3615xs vender_format_version=2 console=ttyS0,115200n8 withefi elevator=elevator quiet syno_port_thaw=1' set sata_args='sata_uid=1 sata_pcislot=5 synoboot_satadom=1 DiskIdxMap=0C SataPortMap=1 SasIdxMap=0' I would very much appreciate any advice/guidance from those with more experience and success in this matter. All my efforts to date with the new board have proven fruitless. Thanks.
  20. I've got an old server laying around that seems perfect for an xpenology build. I was using it with FreeNAS, but I want the flexibility of Synology SHR. It's got 48GB of RAM, so if I can also play around with VM's on it, that would be a plus. What would be the recommended boot loader and model to use for this server: Supermicro 2U Server X8DTN+ MB, 2x Xeon L5630 2.13ghz CPU, 48Gb Ram and M1015 Raid controller It's got 12 Bays, and I'm thinking I want to use it as an off-site backup for a few Synology Servers that I have out in the world. Is there an argument to be made to go to ESXi and then Xpenology instead of bare metal?
  21. Hi. I'm building a NAS for home usage and would like to run a couple of VM's on it as well. For this I found the SuperMicro SYS-5019S-M attractive as it''s not that expensive, it's a 1U with 4 hotswap bays. The only question left is; will this thing be compatible with DSM 6.x? I searched around and found some people running DSM on supermicro, however I'm not really sure about this type. I also can't figure out which sata controller it has (if at least it has one standard?) and if this will be compatible. I'm looking to run raid01 on it with 4 disks. Any input would be appreciated
  22. I have an SC846 chassis with the SAS2 backplane that's connected to the motherboard via a Dell H310 card (flashed to IT mode). Do any of you have a similar setup, that some how makes it so your locating LEDs on each of your drive bays is flashing? I noticed after flashing the card and getting it all setup again that the red drive LEDs were flashing, and they won't turn off. Now that I'm not running my M5015 cards where I can run the MegaRAID software, I can't go in and stop the LEDs. Any insight here?
  23. DSM 6.2.1-23824 Update 4 installed. I have a bare metal install on a Supermicro x10sl7-f motherboard in a supermicro cse825-tq chassis. The case has 8 hot swap drives. I have the 8 sata cables connected to 8 ports on the motherboard. I have one drive in it for the initial install and it shows up as "drive 7" in the dsm gui. If I add a second drive it shows up as "drive 8". The weird thing is it doesn't matter which empty slot I put the drive in. It always shows up as drive 8. Anyone know why this would happen?
  24. I have using the earlier version of the loaders without any issues. It ran DSM 6.1.7. thinking about updating to 6.2 using loader 1.03b ds3615xs. Ihave been unsuccessful. the network card is recognized showing as migratable. I tried to install the DSM 6.2, it crashes in the middle of installation of DSM. Here is the screenshot. Any idea? I have tried 1.03b ds3617 as well, same symptoms. thanks
