  1. might be silly questions, but as I've only used juns 1.04b, can I use my real serial with this like I did with 6.2.3 1.04b 918+ same hardware? would I still be able to enable hardware transcoding? EDIT: I noticed ARPL (Automated RedPill Loader ) allows you to install/create a DVA1622 Synology NVR, So would/does this include the 8 Camera licenses it comes with it automatically?
  2. i'm not a NOOB, but im a re-Noob, haven't been around in long time. i have two 918+ 1.04b with identical 1151 coffee lake parts I've been running for 3 years. Have real serial #'s btw. HW: Gigabyte B360 HD3 + i3-8100 DSM 6.2.3-25426 i needed to combine both of these 918+ nas's together for many reasons. i backed up the 4tb shr 3x 4tb to a single 8tb drive BASIC array. formatted the three 4tb drives and moved them all into one giant big case together with other 918. ALSO, i installed 2 pcie 3.0 x1 - 4 port sata III cards total 8 new sata ports for ssd arrays. Installed 2 of these cards..... Some ******* happened though. Bios got screwed up, had to reset it, forgot values, so i updated the bios anyways since it was 2 yrs old and put values i could remember in bios. WEIRD STUFF started happening. Everything seriously slowed down, from network to disk transfer speeds. The MAIN issue i am having is all of a sudden when i try to SSH into NAS with both admin credentials I get PERMISSION DENIED SEE IMAGE BELOW.. Now i am wanting to know if there is a SAFE PROCESS to reinstall DSM but keep all 20Terabytes of my best data. Is there? Things I've tried: I made sure and both logins are under admin. I rebooted a lot, tweaked bios, delete the registry entry in windows for saved Putty credentials.
  3. May i ask or expand upon this? i needed to add 8 ssds to my 918+, for all ssd array. i have 4 open pcie 3.0 x1 slots, and just purchased 2x pcie 3.0 x1 cards each card has 4 sata 6gbps. ive connected 8 ssds to the cards and all is working fine. My question is, does using for example, 4x sata 6gbps on 1 tiny pcie x1, doesnt that slow it down? Doesnt 4 sata ssds require more lanes or something? Is this bottleneck?
  4. Hello, ive been running (2) ds918+ 6.2.4 baremetal with juns loader 1.04b for a long time. Is this safe enough to replace that with dsm 7+ ? Are there any downsides to using this?
  5. Hello, I have 2x ds918+ on 6.2.4 and would like to test dsm 7+ Could someone point me to a guide on how to do this?
  6. Is this a DEV discussion? I've been gone a while. Does this allude to the fact that someone has a dsm 7+ bootloader/working for xpenology? Sorry, i havent been around. Thanks
  7. I read some time back that the DS918+ did NOT support the Disk Benchmark Feature in ANY DSM. When i go into disk management there is no benchmark feature. Recently, I read that DS918+ DOES support disk benchmark but only in DSM 7+ (btw has anyone fixed bootloader, so we can upgrade to dsm 7.0 ?) Is there some sort of package i could install to do internal disk benchmarking on disks in my Xpen DS918+'s running software BELOW 7.0?? I'd prefer to test using the Synology benchmark tool but any brand would work..
  8. MBD-X10SDV-TLN4F-O D-1541 I'm don't mean to be rude, in fact i may even sound "simple" saying this... But do you think Supermicro will ever stop adding #'s to their motherboard models? Like in 50 years how long will the model numbers be.... 1000 digits?
  9. 918+ (Ahern2-below in images) Coffee lake running perfect for like 2 years. Now i cannot access. Synology Helper confirms the software did not update. Have not updated, but took machine offline for 2 weeks due to remodeling. Gigabyte b360 hd3 i3-8100 tried multiple nics, X540 t2, a generic intel 8000 series and intel nic on board. The only thing i HAD TO do was reset bios to factory then change settings. That's the only change. The machine SHOWS UP AS READY IN SYNOLOGY HELPER BUT I ALWAYS GET ERROR ON WEBPAGE. EVEN TRIED EDGE AND CHROME What do i do now? What could be causing this? Could a bios setting be causing this? Disregard AHERNMAIN, that's my IDENTICAL setup, that IS working. Just another 918 with same hardware/software
  10. I keep asking myself-we make our own drivers here sometimes for Nick cards that aren't supported by Synology. Then I'm reminded that qnap has had Thunderbolt 3 for years, and now they sell a thunderbolt 3 add-in card. So I did a little digging and found a guy online who successfully installed a thunderbolt 3 card in his DIY Nas system and got it working he direct connect it from his Mac to the card in his nas.. Below https://chrisbergeron.com/2021/07/25/ultra-fast-thunderbolt-nas-with-apple-m1-and-linux/ FYI I'm taking this guy at his word that he has this actually working but it appears as such Yes of course I understand I can use 10gbe, I do use it but I want tb3/4 much more. BTW this would be using the TB3 in Networking mode. Are there any really smart people out there who think is a possibility that we could somehow implement this into Synology or at the very least unraid or freenas or OTHER free open NAS operating systems??
  11. As i am not a developer, i will not be posting here. Is there a Non-Dev discussion group that is elsewhere for this topic does anyone know of? Thanks
  12. How do i do this? Just by not allowing external access to the box? Should i be blocking any of Synology's IP addresses? I thought i read somewhere of someone blocking their IP address.
  13. Apologies as i started this thread while apparently under the influence and forgot i created it. Been dealing with some personal stuff lately. Thank you for your contributions. Will name best answer too. The only thing i don't see a blot of is FOMO posts about this. Are there a lot of them? Where are they, on Reddit or something? Or are we speaking in historical terms, as in people getting FOMO about updates in years past, or regarding just this one or what? FOMO may be true, but i dont feel as if any of the questions were unreasonable. DOUBLE POSTING would be unreasonable 😉
  14. Oh shite. I honestly don't remember posting that. I better take it easy on the Xannys and Vodka. Geesh i'm embarrassed. I'm sorry folks.
  15. Thanks all and IG88 So i think i made my post so it was not understood properly. What i was getting at is: There must have been instances in the past, where because of whatever reason, people could not update Xpenology to latest DSM because when they do it bricks their system or whatever. Like right now, if i were to try to update to 6.2.4, from the Updates posts, all i see is UNSUCCESSFUL, so i cannot update. It seems to have been like this for some time. After reading below thread i understand a little bit more about why 6.2.4 doesn't work. And having people Speculate on why or if Synology is blocking Xpenology users is pointless. My questions are less about security and more about the chances of ever being able to update Xpenology again. More concerned about functionality. And eventually updating to VER 7.0. So: Based on history, and OG Xpenology users, have there been points in the past where we went without being able to update DSM for long periods? How long did it take for a fix? This may be a moot point now, but was my true question. What ARE the chances that someone will fix something so that we can update Xpenology DSM again? Good? Bad? Maybe another moot point but.... @IG-88 Your multiple references to Security have now peaked my curiosity. Is there some other reason we should be concerned about security other then not being able to update DSM? Are you @IG-88 moving your personal NAS away from Xpenology? if so why? @IG-88 when you say: are you saying like go into router and prevent Xpen box from internet somehow? How would one do this? In DSM or router? Sorry for NOOB question
  16. At least on Baremetal, i don't see any option to safely update to 6.2.4 unless i am missing something I haven't been on Xpen long enough (still sort of newbie) to have been around for the history of Xpen and instances where we couldn't update successfully. At least for this long, seems like its been months since we could update. What do we do? Just patiently wait? Which is fine... See if someone can fix/patch? Go to another platform? Did Synology possibly do this to kill the Xpenology project? (maybe a silly question) What are the chances I wake up one morning and get an automatic update and be bricked? How can I prevent auto/background updates besides simply update settings in DSM? In the past, in instances where Synology updated software that Xpen did not like, and people couldn't successfully update, how long did people wait to update (until someone fixed loader i assume) their Xpen builds, years? How many years, or how long did it take to fix? What are the chances that we'll be able to update past 6.2.3? What are the potential problems with staying on 6.2.3 besides not being able to get latest package updates? Is it completely fine to stay on 6.2.3 for a long long time, should i not worry about it?
  17. 2x DS918+ 1.04b 2x B365M HD3 mobo, 8gb ram. 1 with/10tb and 1 with/7tb Something appears to be trying to login into both my ds918+'s from INTERNAL IP via SSH!!! But Synology is blocking it.. I've not used SSH in months, until i ran netstat 2 hours ago. Both NAS's had DDNS on them and were exposed to internet but I just removed everything, changed admin and user account login info, disabled ssh, removed port forwards and any DHCP IP reservations in router and a host of other things. You can see the issue/problem in images below.(attached) This issue is happening for both Nas's, and at the same time last night. The problem is i cannot diagnose which IP it is. The symptoms that led me to factory reset my routers happened PRIOR to me getting this error msg from DSM(in below image), hence giving ALL my 30+ devices new ip addresses (therefore i cannot trace yet) For all I know, whatever did this has a new ip given by router. I have a guess that it may have came from a wifi thermostat ip or possibly from my 21 year old's pc or himself, he was up at this hour when this happened. He isnt the smartest pc guy and i don't even think he knows what SSH is. He can sometimes download weird stuff, but he went and wiped his win 10 pc today for me so idk. A very senior member(imho) here said i should be very worried about this and to do netstat commands, also turn on logging in dsm so i did. But I don't know how far to go from here. Today I got new router, changing all network settings, then all my passwords for everything. I'm making extra backups currently to usb, then to wipe both nas boxes eventually. My fear is that whoever they are, are ready to Ransomware, and already own me and all my data etc. The data is backed up so not worried, but changing passwords will be a pain and calling my thermostat company(Honeywell) to change info is never a treat, but manageable. I may even get newer thermostats for home. Has anyone heard of this? Should I be very, very worried like the other member said? Is this some weird DSM thing? Could this not be from an actor? What lengths must I go to flush this bad actor out if so?? Am I overreacting? Can anyone provide me some good advice? I'll buy ya a coffee for your troubles
  18. I thought I'd post here, not seeing a thread explaining what the deal is with the latest intermediate updates failing and so few people testing them, my curiosity got the best of me, unless i'm just missing something completely, which has been known to happen. 😉 Though not the newest member, I've been on Xpen 2 years maybe? I do have some noob-type questions since noticing the two latest updates failing, and not seeing a lot of discussion of it. In my short time here I cannot recall new updates like 25554/25556 failing so quickly, and it does concern me. But again, I'm relatively new. And I'm sure this isnt the first time this has happened, where Jun or others have had to fix loaders MY HW 2x Identical Baremetal DS918+ Xpen's 1.04b With Gigabyte B360-hd3's I3-8100's both working fantastically on DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3 My questions regarding this are: Should we be concerned? Long term, with the intermediate updates not working? (assuming we already have backups and have all the functionality we need) Could DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3 possibly be the last safe Xpen Version for us using Jun's Loaders? Is Jun still kicking around to come up with a possible solution? Or anyone else? How often in the past have 2 consecutive updates failed right out of the gate like the latest intermediate updates have? Is there any particular reason, such as a major OS change, or Synology wanting to rid us "Open Sourcers" of this beautiful software, that is causing these updates not to work? Have Xpen users been migrating to alternatives to Jun's loader or other solutions noobs may not be aware of? if so what's out there for Baremetal?
  19. Hey flyride, It's been a while since I read the spec of 918+ Xpen dsm but quick question about 10gbe. I Have 2 918+ 1.04b baremetal all ssd arrays- both with pcie x1 intel nic to router. Then, I have x540-t2 in both units. Not using on board Realtek nic. I Have the x540-t2's direct connected but showing only 1 network interface in dsm for the x540-t2 cards, it's not showing both. For example I want to link aggregate and bind. I recall reading something about a max lan port limitation for Xpen 918+ but not sure,i forgot. Is this most likely caused by me not using an extra.lzma? And/Or Would this be because I only listed 1 nic in config when setting up the dsm usb drive? To solve this would I need to remake the dsm usb drive but add the extra.lzma? I'm trepidatious to remake usb drives because there's important data on 1,backed up to the other.
  20. Yes to confirm they both support sata. Tested and good. So i did end up cloning the raid drive and it seems to work. But theres a problem.... with every reboot, or even sometimes not rebooting the drive is reporting that dsm cannot access system partition. So, it allows me to click Repair, and it repairs in two seconds. I needed the samsung 840 drive so it got wiped. Yeah stupid.. Im probably going to backup elsewhere. But, i just don't get it. Can i remedy the "failed to access partition" somehow? especially since i just have to click Repair and it fixes immediately? Have you guys ran into this? Where a drive often keeps saying this just to repair in 2 seconds after clicking repair? Any ideas?
  21. Wow this is fantastic news, especially for people like me with 2-3 Xpen ds918's with 4-6 expty m.2 slots. Thanks again Flyride!
  22. Hey Flyride, i didnt want to open a new thread. But you know how Xpen/Synology, using NVME as storage is a pain? Does the same apply to using an M.2 Sata drive? Not nvme but sata? Can one use m.2 sata drives for storage without any extra config in Xpenology? Or is it the same idea as NVME?
  23. Apologies. Admin please delete my last post if possible this was already Answered by IG88 in post #4
  24. Thank you, both of you gentleman. Of course Flyride has to use big words like Anomalous haha j/k. Ok, im going keep it. Lastly... Hypothetically. Could i shut this server down, pull the 840 evo, clone to another Same size ssd, and the server boot back up without DSM even taking notice? 😉😲
  25. Thanks for the help my dudes. I'd really like to check out cloning the drive just to see. My issue is that this 840 evo is a 500gb and my spare is Sandisk Ultra II 480gb. 840 evo has 460gb available and the Ultra II has like 440-450gb available so its close. Secondly, i have a SanDisk ssd already installed in this array but it is "unsupported", the only drive in the array thats not supported. i have to assume this Sandisk is also "unsupported" . I Guess i could See DSM getting a little mad at all this if i were to try to clone. Maybe ill start ssd shopping.? Fyi i did a S.M.A.R.T. Extended test after my OP today for the first time ever on the drive and I've got more specifics. From what i understand, the 840 evo is reallocating space and the drive is basically getting smaller. And btw, the 840 evo msata is connected via an msata to sata adapter acting as a 2.5 inch ssd though this may not be relevant But check out these smart attributes: Anything look amiss to you guys here? Or not much to worry about? I wish i knew how to check the actual space left on ssd after it reallocating space.
