@Joe Bethersonton Did you set the USB's vid & pid?
-
A quick search of the forum & you would have found this guide.
-
@Gordon Pullar please do not create multiple posts regarding the same issue, I have deleted your other post & edited this one to include some of the information from the other post.
In in order for people to help you it is a good idea to say what version of DSM you are trying to install together with the loader you are using. I would also suggest you search the forums to see if anyone else is using that board & have a read through the FAQ's.

I'm pretty sure Synology disabled root access in DSM 6, you can enable it again if you wish, just do a google search for instructions or you can modify winscp, again google for instructions.

Thanks. Looks like i managed to get it working and updated to 6.1.7 so am now up to date.
I appreciate this is now a turn from the original post but seems silly to create new threads. I have a couple questions
1 - Am i meant to leave the USB drive with the bootloader on plugged in or has the software now been installed on my main hard drives on a partition? Whenever i reboot after an update i seem to always have a bit of hassle to get booting correctly/being recognised by my pc
2 - The control panel has a permanent red notification telling me there's an update. I've turned off automatic updates (as much as i can) but it's still trying to tell me to update. This is irritating but i can live with it
3 - I presume because this isn't an official Synology device i can't register for Synology QuickConnect? Whenever i try to set it up through the device i get an error message. Any advice for configuring remote access? I'm using a Unifi based network if that helps.
1: DSM has been installed on all HDD's but the USB with the loader is needed for booting so should be left plugged in. Check your bios settings the ensure everything is ok.
2: You're running 6.1 but 6.2 is the latest version so you will get the notification in control panel but you can just ignore it.
3: Correct, quickconnect won't work, however it is easy to setup external access. Check out the FAQ's.

Have not figured so, Cloud Station Server sounded right when I saved my pictures on the server's "clouds".
Are your photos automatically saved from your phone to the server with Photo Station, or do you transfer it on your own when you know or how does it work?
I do it manually but I believe you can automate it.
-
Boot from a Ubuntu live USB & initialise the disks then you can do a clean install.
-
Why not setup Photo Station on the server & use the DSPhoto app on your phone, works great for me.

No problem, for future reference you can message myself or one of the other moderators to get the thread moved.

Thanks flyride, that's good information.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but for RAID 5 the following limitations apply:
- I need at least three drives of the same size (unless I want to under utilize the larger drives)
- The only expansion I can do is add more drives of the same size or they will be under utilized
- To use larger drives in the future, I'd have to replace smaller ones one at a time and rebuild
- During the replacement cycle, the larger drives will be under utilized until all the smaller drives are replaced
Where does DSM install itself initially? Would it be possible to force the OS to install on the SSD drive and dedicate the SSD to that and the other apps I want to host like PLEX?
Thanks for all the great feedback everyone.
DSM is installed to all HDD's, you can't choose where to install it.

@trek102 DSM is installed on all HHD's so you should be able to just move them into to N54L, however as the model will be different you should get the option to migrate. Things to check before doing this, what version of DSM is currently installed on your 212/213 as you will need to match the loader accordingly. The loaders can be found here:
Don.t forget to disable C1E support in the bios & set the correct vid & pid of the USB stick& as always backup any important data before proceeding. I would also advise checking out the FAQ's.

You're right that the DS3615xs no longer supports SHR out of the box, however it can be enabled but you have to SSH into the server & edit /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf,
this file is readonly so enter following command:sudo -i vi /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf comment out/delete supportraidgroup="yes" then add support_syno_hybrid_raid="yes"
Once done reboot the server & SHR should be available as on option.

I'm going to switch my N40L back to Xpenology after getting fed up with Windows. Will this work with DSM 6.2.1?
Yes, remember to disable C1E support in the bios.

Welcome to the forum, check out the FAQ's for a guide on setting up external access.

Thebay bios is the one generally used & can be found here: https://www.avforums.com/threads/hp-n36l-n40l-n54l-microserver-updated-ahci-bios-support.1521657/
Also don't forget to set the USB's vid & pid & you should be good to go.

i have now made a new boot loader, the problem is that I I use a Mac with VMware and it won't work for some reason I just used my dads pc and wept now I got the cfg file
If you had mentioned in your original post that you were using a Mac you could have saved yourself a lot of hassle.

no I did it with win32diskimager
You can create the USB stick with win32diskimager but in order to edit the cfg file you must mount it in osfmount.

the problem is that I have no cfg file at all
Did you mount the img file in osfmount?
-
@Flarup did you set the USB's vid & pid? To update the cig file you can use osfmount or the xpenology tool which has other utilities too

Thanks, Dfsa, but for sure there is some issue with me. I am still struggling. any other ideas, please?
Other than creating a fresh USB stick & using a different HDD I'm afraid not, all I can say is that it does work with the N54L.

Yes you can, however performance may be affected.

@bajwha If you had done a quick google search you would have found that thebay bios can be found here: https://www.avforums.com/threads/hp-n36l-n40l-n54l-microserver-updated-ahci-bios-support.1521657/

in DSM 6.x

Why not give your parents the N54L & build yourself a NAS that you can upgrade as & when required. The advantage of doing it this way is that the N54 has 5 drive bays available should you wish to use it as a backup destination for your own server.
