  1. You should be able to, move the disks into another pc however it will depend on the hardware in the old pc so it would be worth testing it with a spare HDD to be sure it will work, make sure you install the same version that your N54 is running.

As you already know you will need to flash the bios to use the 5th sata port, it's pretty easy & should be fairly painless. Search for the bay bios.

You can remove the disks & USB to test free as etc,  however I would number the disks & put them back in the same order.

@DfdsThanks for your advice. No matter what I tried with 1.03b, i wasn't making any progress. on 1.02b, synology assistant found it right away and I was able to install DSM 6.1.7. So does that mean I'm out of luck to upgrade to 6.2? In any case, appreciate your help.

Oh, can I install minor updates? Like DSM 6.1.7 update 2 for example?

Were you trying to install 6.2 or 6.2.1? As for 6.1.7 you should be ok applying the minor updates.

And plugging back into my DIY NAS will retain all my data in my HDD?

What about user accounts, and settings etc.

    Thanks.

Yes, all your data and settings will be retained as the USB is only used to boot. If you want to you can backup your configuration data from control panel\update & restore.

  4. Hi, Welcome to the forum.

    1) DSM will handle the raid array, it's what it's designed to do.

    2) Not as far as I'm aware.

    3) Setting the HDD's to spin down after a set time & also schedule power on off when not in use.

    4) DSM has S.M.A.R.T. testing built in & testing can be scheduled.

I'd suggest having a look at the tutorials & FAQ's then trying to install DSM 6.1 with jun's 1.02b loader & DS3615xs image as this is what most people use & has the widest compatibility..

... to be honest i never thought about this version before but yes, in general this should be a very nice option, too! Then i think i will go for the ASRock J3455-ITX - does someone has this motherboard already  in use ?

I believe there are several people using this board with 6.2 but there have been some issues getting hardware transcoding to work,. The J3455B-ITX version was been confirmed as working by user ideasman69, so maybe the better choice.
