Just tried in a VM, it refuses to upgrade with the message the pat file is corrupt. However, i don't see any pat file on the ftp from synology.

Not yet, you could try upgrading a vm install.

LE is great, i use it for my projects. It should be possible to use LE for xpenology, if you like to renew the cert every 90 day's in DSM be my guest. I just bought a 2 year valid ssl cert for my nas.

You also should enable HSTS, under webservices (if you have a valid cert).

I would go for bare metal, with an intel chipset. Those are greatly supported by xpenology/
