About Me

  6. why not using a sata controller, your board has 3 pcie slots using a JMB585 based card (pcie 3.0 support) would be even better than a usb 3.0 drive, even a 8 port lsi fusion based sas controller is possible or if you have to a pcie 1x based 88se9215 (there are even M.2 sata controller you could use) imho esata would not change anything compared to usb, it will be shown as external storage and you cant create a raid with it when it comes to ease of mint and performance you should buy a sata controller to add more ports and use them the way its intended i cant see why your sata disks (screenshot) are all over the place, you have 4 internal ports and ...?
  7. maybe just buy a marvell 88se9215 based controller for you pcie slot https://sybausa.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=775 (btw. thats the same chip as in the original 918+)
  8. there can be bad builds with no quality controll at all for one reason, choosing a controller from syba/iocrest or any "brand" that has a name to loose might help in this matter i dont favor them much because there are extremely outdated, like no pcie 3.0 support combined with a low pcie lane count having a pcie 1x card with pcie 2.0 makes it 4 ports for 500MB/s (88se9215) and having just 2 lanes (88se923x) and blocking a valuable 4x/8x/16 pcie port for just 4 ports is also not so good the lsi scales much better even used controllers still work reliable and there are o lot of them around so they can be bought cheap but i took them out of my new build as the driver does some uncool things like shifting drives when one is missing so you will have drives jumping "slots" when one is having problems, can make recovery a mess and same cases exchanging drives can go wrong, i also had some weird log messages with iron wolf drives lately and had to connect them to the onboard sata beside this the mpt sas drivers are not native drivers for the 918+ and in some situations (like the 6.2.2 update) you might loose support for the controller ahci is better in both of the last points, fixed drive positions and native build into the synology kernel - biggest problem is to get a high port count, low price and making use of a pcie 4x or 8x port or at least pcie 3.0 support marvell and asm media dont have pcie 3.0 to ahci chips at all, only thing is the JMB585 (i'm using now for my new build and testing/backup build) performace is ok for normal hdd's on pcie 3.0 (2 lanes) about 350MB/s on all 5 ports and max.570MB/s per sata port (so its good to max out 3 sata ssd's) https://forums.unraid.net/topic/78489-pci-e-sata-expansion-card/?tab=comments#comment-806159 there is also a M.2 version of it (just tested it shortly, i'm a little worried about the chip not having a heatsink, i guess if i turn my cpu's heatsink 90 degree i might get some airflow in the M.2 region) but when just having a pcie 4x slot, pcie 3.0 - in case of port counts and performance a sas2307 chip based controller is still the best choice but at least there are options now with the jmb585, lets hope there will be a cheap pcie 4x bridge/switch for combining two jmb585 and make full use of a pcie 4x slot btw. there is no indication for 88se9215 problems in this list https://wiki.unraid.net/Hardware_Compatibility#PCI_SATA_Controllers (and synology using a 9215 for four disks instead of a 9235 is just sad, reduces the rebuild speed of the system a lot, but i guess they where looking for the cheapest solution to saturate one or two 1GBit nic's and a 9215 is enough for this task)
  9. Hi, I'm new here. I recently installed dsm6.1.7 on Asus E45M1-I DELUXE (amd e-450, Realtek 8111E, 6xSata). It working pretty good, speed is enough but it isn't stable, it working good by day or two and it stop responding. I think I should swap to Intel cpu. Unfortunately motherboards with integrated cpu has mostly 2 or 4 sata ports, I need about 10. I was thinking about motherboard + lsi sas controller or two 88SE9215 controllers. I have some 4gb ddr3l laying around so itx motherboard would be nice but matx is ok. I wanted it to be cheap and low energy. Also I'm not sure that lsi sas controller would be better choice over 88SE9215. I can buy: 1. ASUS N3050M-E (n3050, Realtek RTL8111H, 2x SATA, 3x Pci-E x1) + 2x marvell controllers 2. ASRock Q1900M (j1900, Realtek RTL8111GR, 2x SATA, 2x Pci-E x1, Pci-E x16) + lsi or 2x marvell controllers 3. ASRock Q1900-ITX (j1900, Realtek RTL8111GR, 2x SATA, 2x Sata, Pci-E x1, mPci-E) + marvell controller 4. ASUS N3150I-C (N3150, Realtek RTL8111H, 2x SATA, Pci-E x4, mPci-e) + lsi controller 5. ASUS N3150M-E (n3150, Realtek RTL8111H, 2x SATA, 3x Pci-E x1) + 2x marvell controllers 6. ASRock J3455M (j3455, Realtek RTL8111E, 2x SATA, 3x Pci-E x1) + 2x marvell controllers I need it for backup from 4xPC, 6xAndroid, iscsi for 2xPC, docker with openhab/smartassistant. E450 was enough for this "tasks" Which motherboard would be best with which controllers?

  11. 5-15 watt from specs, the heatsink is a hint not sure how many disks you need to connect but there is marvell 88se9215 (4ports) and jmb585 (5ports) that would have less power consumtion (~1W) maybe replace the nvme ssd with sata and you will have two pcie 1x slots for 8-10 disks (but the ssd would then be sharing the 500MB/s with other disks (hen they are used) you might also be able to shave off power consumtion power by using the internal nic and replacing the 2port intel nic with a 1 port pcie 1x card, my iintel cards have pretty small chips without heatsink, a i211 has less the 1W (without the phy) or getting rid of the pcie nic at all and use a usb nic? nice out of the box thinking and soldering
  12. mini itx, 10G nic, pcie expandable and cheap - no way atm micro atx seems better suited and apollolake and geminilake are to limited with its 6 pcie lanes, its possible to add a 2.5/5G usb nic (usb3) but in most cases it will also be a problem with the often only two sata ports, most/all pci 1x card with 2 or 4 ports a only pcie 2.0 so 500MB/s is max perfromace for this, so even a normal hdd will be slowed down when using more then two added disks there are some mini-itx supermicro server boards with 10G onboard and a pcie slot (8x or 4x) but they are expansive and lack hardware transcoding capabilites so its about micro atx and i only know one board that has only slightly more depth as the mini-itx factor - its the already mentioned gigabyte B365M HD3 it has 6xsata, two pcie 16 sloth (one 16x, one 4x) 2xpcie 1x and a M.2 (pcie 4x, can slo be used with a M.2 to PCIe 4x adapter or a M.2 SATA card) i use it with a pcie 3.0 capable pcie 2x controller (JMB585) and a dualport 10G card and still have 2 x pcie 1x open (at least 2 sata ports per pcie 1x slot are ok wen using cheap pcie 2.0 controllers like marvell 88se9215) and the M.2 slot (there is a 5port M.2 card with a JMB585, it does work but i did not tested it extensively yet) if full size micro atx is possible then there is a wide range of boards whats with this reposting every few hours? if thats a kind i attention seeking then it will bring you to the attention of ignore lists, so please act like a normal human being and be patient as everyone else (btw. there are also time zones on this planet, some people might be in a different zone then you, most people sleep 8h and have a normal life and job beside being active here, it's logical and reasonable to wait more then 2-4 hours for an answer)
  13. Hi, thank you very much for the how-to, I managed to install TS-453Be on an Asrock J3455M (2 integrated Sata ports) with an extra pcie 4xSATA card SYBA SI-PEX40064 (Marvell 88SE9215 chip). I may try to switch to TS-653B later to be able to use all of the Syba ports, even if this card is pcie x1 and will slow down data read/write with more than 2 disks on it. I had to modify the [System Disk 3] and [System Disk 4] DEV_BUS in model.conf, the right address was listed in lspci and is corresponding to one of the pcie slots instead of the Syba itself (there were 4 pci devices listed, I tested those addresses one by one and finally found it). So, the good setting for this setup, when the SATA card is in pcie slot 1 on the motherboard is B00:D19:F1 (was listed as 00:13:1 in lspci, just convert from hexadecimal to decimal 13->19). I only have one question regarding QTS updates, do we have to do it through the loader, by booting the usb then "vi ./my_create_qnap_boot" and edit "patched_firmware" to download the new QTS release, or can we just update in the Qnap web interface?
  14. I was able to find a picture of a 88SE9215 chip on a DS918+ motherboard. I now realize you may have referred to the deliberately incomplete "reference hardware" block at the top of the post, which isn't really the point (did you even open the spreadsheet?) Anyway, Synology does not publish their hardware specs and any factual information comes from postings on the Internet. I'm not sure where the reference to the 9125 chip came from at the time, but I will update the reference hardware block accordingly. Thank you for contributing to our collective knowledge on the subject.
  15. Thanks for your reply ! Ye~! Why not . I had several problems Even though I read all the topics about how to install/update 6.2.x & your topice "Driver extension series" , repalce the extra.lzma again & again, not working. now, I'm waiting for 88SE9215 card arrive, make some test, then discuss with everyone.
  16. the real 918+ is use 88SE9215 SATA controller , Not the 88SE9125. I trust your post , and bought a 88SE9125 card. No Disk found! then I check out the real 918+ Motherboard findout 88SE9215 is the native chip up there.
  17. Hi everybody. I'm thinking about building my own PC especially for Xpenology. I was looking for a build guide but it seems there's none. So, I need your experience & tips about that. Can anybody post here which Motherboard and CPU you're using (and eventually with the DSM version) ? Please, add the number of SATA ports on the MB and if they're all seen by XPEn... In the best, I'd like to find a MB which costs less than 100 bucks (brand new) and which have at less 6 SATA ports (+ M2 or Mini SATA, eventually)... and, of course, the best CPU to make the whole thing to work properly and fast enough. Let's say, 100 buck top for the CPU, too (brand new, too). Side question: I'll like some tips about a PCIe to SATA cards that would work very nicely with XPEn ... eventually, I'll open another topic if necessary...(-: thanks !!!! P.S: yeah, I know about the guide here https://xpenology.org/ but I think we need a bigger list than just the four MB listed there (I copy the list here anyway) ASRock Q1900DC-ITX Gigabyte GA-C1037UN-EUCELERON1007U IO SI-PEX40064(Marvell 88SE9215) – 4-Port Internal SATA3 ASUS H61M-A
  18. Hi Could you issue if this will work: 1. GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V (rev. 1.0) + 2. ADT-Link 8Gbps Mini PCI-e mPCIe To PCIe x8 PCI-E 8x Adapter Extension Cable to mini PCI-e + 3. Now I have Linkreal Mini PCIe to 4 Port SATA 3.0 6Gbps Adapter Expansion Card with Heatsink Mini Expansion Card with Marvell 88SE9215 but this board is very hot even with one HDD and works with forced cooling, connecting still disks is very scary.
  19. Tach zusammen ! CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-9100F MB: ASUS PRIME B360M-K ??? (hab ich von der XPEnology org Seite) oder lieber das teurere GIGABYTE Z390 M RAM: G.Skill DIMM 16GB DDR4-2400 Kit SATA Controller: Syba SI-PEX40064 4 Port SATA III PCI-EXPRESS 2.0 x 1 ( Marvell-88SE9215 ) Gehäuse: Inter-Tech 2U-2404S Danke schon mal ! 20. yes 88SE9215 chip is a 4port controller (but has one one pcie lane) yes, from my link above about asm chips you can see its a 2port controller so you should be able to use two ports
  21. Thanks for the answer, I realized that the controller is not suitable. If I put a controller (Orient M9215S with a Marvell 88SE9215 chip) with 4 sata ports in the PCI-E slot, will the system see 4 disks? And another controller (Mini PCI-E PCI Express with 2 SATA ports with ASMedia ASM1061 chip), will the system see 2 disks?
  22. Note: Marvel 88SE9215 also exists in M.2 M Key 2260 version: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32814284199.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.25b53c0ds9S1kJ&algo_pvid=e52cd22c-0354-472f-9c68-076f7c750c23&algo_expid=e52cd22c-0354-472f-9c68-076f7c750c23-6&btsid=0be3743615869391392268670eb250&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_ Or you can buy M.2 M key to PCIe 1x riser card similar to this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000825543839.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.377d17088YtFCl&algo_pvid=89c570e2-7219-41e7-8dcf-4ba32f7fdaa0&algo_expid=89c570e2-7219-41e7-8dcf-4ba32f7fdaa0-24&btsid=0ab6fa7b15869398135633409e5814&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_
  23. I suggest to use Marvel 88SE9215 (4 port SATA 6Gbps PCIe x1) for best compatibility, because it's used in DS918+. This card is easily available at ebay (and other China shops) in the various form factors (PCIe / miniPCIe)
  24. 1) Not sure about 9th gen, coz I've never thought of using anything higher than my pentium G5400 at this moment, I'd rather save electricity lol A NAS is supposed to be idle most of the time... Too much CPU power is useless in my use case however, the CPU itself should work, just the internal graphics card might not give you flawless hardware transcoding without driver mods 2) Not sure, not even sure if the card is compatible with non-syno boards maybe you should look up the official synology list: https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=category&category=network_interface_cards&p=1 3) I can only make sure ASMedia ASM1061 (2ports) and Marvell 88SE9215 (4-ports) work with DSM as I used them now and before, many others might work as long as they support AHCI P.S. the ds918+ loader has a limit on the number of SATA drives, be careful when doing so.
  25. Hi Bruce, I have manage to get a 6 port Marvell 88SE9215 Pcie 1x card to work with DSM 6.2 using Jun 1.03b for DS3615xs. Hope that helps.
