  1. Generate a valid serial and MAC address and it should work. Note that there's no need to use QuickConnect in order to make it accessible from outside your LAN. I would recommend to buy a domain name and use CloudFlare to point to your NAS. It's quite easy to make a script that keeps your IP current if needed. Read "Modify the boot image" here: https://idmedia.no/projects/xpenology/i ... -or-later/

    Working DSM 6

You already have plenty of free NAS software to choose from The only thing I really love about Synology/Xpenology is the ability to scale the volume when necessary (even though this is still somewhat buggy). Home directories, the web UI and LUN-support are all really great features. The only thing that's coming close is unRAID, but it lacks features like home directories and LUNs.
  3. Thanks for the feedback. I've added my PSU as a reference in my top post. I'm using a 750 W PSU which should be more then enough to pull 15 drives, but I'll take a look at the distribution of disks per rail.
  4. You mean start from scratch? Would love to, but I only have one HBA card and that's currently in use... I'll look into it and see if I can get a new rig for testing. In the meantime I hope more people are able to share their thoughts on this and help me test.
  5. This post is based on ferno's Don't fill all 12 Bays! thread. This post targets all users who have filled all 12 drives and experience issues with XPenology in terms of volume corruption. I know that a lot of people do not have this issue, but I'm certain that there is a major bug in the current version of XPenology we need to solve. How to reproduce the issue: 1. Create a new VM in ESXi Configuration used: ESXi 6.0, 8GB RAM, lsi sas 9201-16i in passthrough 2. Fill all 12 drives and wait for XPenology to rebuild I've personally started with 10 drives and then expanded to 12 3. Run a data scrub or simply stress the volume and it should happen within a short periode of time < 1 day It happened once the rebuild was done and started running the data scrub I have no idea why this happens. the configuration file seems fine and it's happening on vanilla Xpenology. I know that a lot of you don't have this issue, so it may not be a issue on bare metal at all, but if you do please let me know in this thread! hope to be able to rule out a few thing by requesting the following information from you who experience the same issue (here with my current info). My best guess is that this has something to do with SHR or disk groups... XPenology version: XPEnoboot 5.2-5967.1 Virtualization: Yes, ESXi 6.0 Update 2, VM version: 11 RAID controller: LSI SAS 9201-16i HBA (latest IT firmware) Disk group or single volume: Single volume and no disk group RAID type: SHR 2 PSU: Corsair TX750M (750 W) Short description: Volume crashed when expanding from 10 to 12 drives. Volume started throwing disks out of the array and suddenly about half of the drives where missing. Data was still readable, but volume marked as crashed and set to read-only.
  6. I'm experiencing the same issue. I've been using XPenology without issues for many month. Using ESXI 6 with LSI SAS 9201-16i HBA in passthrough mode. Once I've added disk #12, expanded and then ran a scrub the volume crashed. It's a complete mayhem. No issue yet on what causes this, but I'll look into it (or not use more then 12 drives anymore).

  8. I made a video tutorial on that. Hopefully it will help other people:
  9. I can also recommend using ESXi: I use multiple VMs since not every package is running smoothly (or with best performance) on Xpenology. Plex requires a lot when transcoding multiple streams and offers better performance on it's own VM. I also moved transmission and other services out to their own virtual machines due to better performance and a lot more features.
  10. DSM 6 beta 2 tool chain released, is it helpful? No, they will and should definitely wait for the full release. Besides, DSM 6 has still a lot of issues with third party packages according to Synocommunity.
  11. Before the devs can begin looking at DSM 6, they depend on the tool chain to be released here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dsgpl/files/ Subscribe to that page and you'll be notified when it's updated. Before that there won't be a DSM 6 compatible boot image.
  12. I'm using LSI 9201-16i. Works out of the box using ESXi 6 in passthrough mode. So the XPenology VM has direct access to the drives and therefor stuff like SMART and such works out of the box. More info: http://www.avagotech.com/products/serve ... s-9201-16i

    Extracting SHR?

Synology makes it simple to manage your drives and volumes, but if you want you can switch to Ubuntu or another Linux distro. SHR is basically mdadm + LVM so if you google that you should find some guide that helps you to configure it on any Linux distro.
  14. Nice looks is all about CSS once you have a proper structured HTML page. I'm developing PoS systems (and other) and there are no benefits of trying to reuse code from Synology. Spend the time more wisely and learn a framework that's ment to be copied, modified and looks good out of the box such as Bootstrap. There are a lot of styles available too, that way you get clean, easy to read code with minimal effort. More info: http://getbootstrap.com/
  15. Should be pretty easy. Just create a new boot image with a valid serial and mac and swap out the old one. That should do the trick.
  16. As far as I know you'll need a valid serial/mac pair in order to get that to work. If you need a guide, you can take a look at mine here: https://idmedia.no/projects/xpenology/i ... -or-later/
  17. This thread is just sad. Download Surveillance Station from the Package Manager and pay for the extra camera licenses in order to support Synology! Piracy isn't welcome here and I hope this topic can be permanently closed!
  18. I agree on the Java issue. I have to verify that statement about daily backups, but I doubt that.
  19. You are using CrashPlan to backup to NAS? I was thinking about doing that, but there are some limitations if you dont have subscritpion, aren't there? Without a subscription you will be able to backup to "friends" or in order words.. you can install CrashPlan on your computer and tell it to sync files to your NAS (you have to install CrashPlan there as well). You only have to pay for a subscription if you want off-site backup and upload all data to CrashPlan's server (CrashPlan Central). I currently have the "Individual Plan" with my NAS uploading data to CrashPlan Central. All clients, both on my network and outside of my home are using the "Upload to friends" feature to backup to my NAS for free. It's awesome! My guide: https://idmedia.no/projects/xpenology/h ... -synology/ Video: https://idmedia.no/projects/xpenology/v ... -synology/
  20. I recommend CrashPlan if you want to backup from a computer to your NAS or from a NAS the cloud. It's cheap, secure and without limitations.
  21. I'm also looking forward to it. I thought about picking up one myself, but settled on Asus RT-AC3200 instead. I just love it's OpenVPN server and the ability to choose between TUN and TAP.
  22. I've made a video tutorial if anyone is interested:
  23. As far as I know HA also requires a valid mac/serial pair, but I'm not using it myself. I think I also noticed other issues, but can't remember at the moment. I can agree on ethical issue and as long as you easily can use your own domain or DDNS I don't see any reason for using Synology's service.
