About Me

  1. I can confirm schnapps feedback, just tested: Transcoding on xpenology@J1900: CPU.Load over 90% Transcoding on win8@I3-2105 : CUP-Load over 90% So I will go with plex transcoding on Q1900 and hope the nas services will not be impacted during the transcoding time.
  2. Make sure you have DirectPlay enabled and set the bit rate to the maximum on your Plex client to stop it transcoding.
  3. Hi XPEnology Forum guys I am sorry if i come of as a total nob in this post but well i am... i've been wanting to get a NAS for some time now and was really set on the Synology 1813+ but it was brought to my attention that the Transcoding bit was horrible, and the QNAP is just too pricey. so i found your forum and decided to build my one NAS with XPEnology witch btw im a huge fan of but i dont know what hardware is supported, i have found some topics that suggest some older hardware and i have seen in some of your signatures that you can use some newer chipsets, and this brings me to my question... i have found some gear that i would like to if possible get approved for XPEnology. i have found the following: Motherboard: http://www.amazon.com/Asus-Z87-PRO-1150 ... B00CRJSXR4 if i have understood this correctly then its only the chipset and network card that has to be compatible right ? all other hardware just works ? the rest of the gear if you are curious is: RAM: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance ... B004CRSM4I CPU: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4430-Qua ... B00CO8T9VC Thansk in advance for your answers P.S. i dont know if i posted this the right place and i am sorry if i have done so, as i stated i am a noob at this.
  4. Hi mate, Welcome on xpenology! That system is a bit overkill for a normal nas. But if you want transcoding, all CPUs are doing the same thing. The difference comes in the transcoding time. The ram is overkill. 4GB max is what you'll need. Think about having a power friendly CPU. All components seem to be compatible with DSM Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Hi tomcarmen, which cpu load on which transcoding resolution you have with your nl54?
  6. I've looked in to this more, and I'm surprised that Plex doesn't use GPU for transcoding on any OS. So yeah. Forget all this then.
  7. My guess: If Plex would use CUDA for transcoding then Yes, installing an NVIDIA GPU would help, but I doubt that Plex can take advantage of the GPU... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. 1) Not unexpected, transcoding requires serious HP and a decent graphics, the j1900 isn't built for transcoding 2) Unless synology have built it into their software no, speedstep is a software application J
  9. Hi all, two open questions i have: 1.- Did any one test video transcoding with j1900? I have over 90% cpu usage using plex trancoding t0 my IPAD2. 2.- What about intel cpu speedstep, the j1900 celeron support as far i now Low power frequency 1333 MHz and Turbo frequency 2420 MHz: Can Xpenology deal with that? Thank you!
  10. @kei78 where can I find which hardware is supported by nanoboot? QNAP runs max. 2 hours a day. I think the power consumption of a i3 CPU should not therefore be crucial. SHR and streaming bluray via Plex (with transcoding) to the iPad will operate smoothly.
  11. IMHO Plex is the best app for streaming. The N54l is just about powerful enough for transcoding.
  12. Was mich noch eingefallen ist. Wäre der die Atom Quadcore-CPU auch ausreichend für Echtheit Transcoding mit Plex Server oder der Videostation? Oder wäre hier ein i3 die bessere Wahl? Grüße thkogel
  13. I think it depends if you're transcoding to stream or transcoding to sync. If it's for syncing, then you'd want Plex to do it a quickly as possible and max out the CPU, if it's for streaming, you'd want Plex to work fast enough to keep the buffer full - if it has to max the CPU to keep the buffer full, then you've got no headroom for multiple streams or higher bit rate conversion in the future. As for my own requirements, I really don't need to transcode. I have a fairly long commute by train, so I copy MKVs to USB drive and play them directly on my phone or tablet (I have a double ended USB drive which make this pretty painless: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDDD-06 ... ndisk+dual)
  14. I humbly disagree with this. The CPU will max out, but my N40L transcodes at 3-4x - the poor bugger managed to serve three streams over the web anyway (although I think that they were 720p). But yes, use direct play when you can! Maxing the CPU out for prolonged periods is 'struggling' in my book! But you're right, the N54L will handle some transcoding work. My N36L was sometimes OK with 720p, but 1080p was out of the question - although I must admit that generally my media has a fairly high bit rate.
  15. Transcoding is pretty intensive. More cores means more processing power, and less time to process not 50 or 25% lower core usage Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. In fact, I have noticed that the N54L CPU is at 99% of usage while transcoding 1080p content. That's why I wanted to add a core to the VM. Thank you for the advise, I'll check the forum now.
  17. Couple of points... 1. The N54L will struggle with realtime transcoding, especially if it's 1080p content. 2. My Chromecast plays pretty much all of my 720/1080p content via DirectPlay (without transcoding). Have you checked out the Plex forum for tips on how to optimize playback to ChromeCast? https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/forum/ ... hromecast/
  18. I considered building something with a similar specs to the Gen8 - I have an N36L G7 and I know just how slow transcoding can be! I found the following parts... Nice B85 mATX board with 6 SATA ports http://www.dabs.com/products/gigabyte-b ... -93LC.html Low power Haswell Celeron (35W TDP): http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Intel ... 46058.html In the end, I decided that I have no real need to transcode, so why pay for the horsepower and electricity to power it? So, I decided to upgrade one of my HTPCs with a Gigabyte J1800 mobo and move the existing board into a new NAS (see sig.)
  19. Hallo Is in Beta 8 no FFMPEG includet ? My Videostation is not working , transcoding videos on stream.
  20. Hello, So a bit of a newbie to this. Works fine in my virtualbox so now looking to move to a dedicated box with an i3 processor for transcoding and asrock motherboard and a few red drives Now, question is, if the M/B supports RAID, does DSm xpenology? Id so what's the best RAID setup to be using If that's not possible, what's the best way to handle the data / hdd? Or do I need to find a way of doing it permanently through virtualbox? Thanks J
  21. I currently have a DS413 which servers my needs well apart from not being able to do Plex transcoding. I am thinking of building a NAS around the following components and would like any advice or even if these parts are supported. Silverstone DS380 Case ASUS H81I-Plus ITX Motherboard Intel i5 4570T (35w) 8GB or 16GB RAM looking for recommendations for a cooler/heatsink, PSU and maybe even replacement fans for the case. I will like to keep this as quiet as possible. I already have 4 X 3TB HDD's. Thanks in advance, James
  22. >What "Apps" should I install to serve the XBMC? I think you're asking the wrong question. XBMC is a client that (typically) runs over file shares. Syno doesn't need an app to share files and folders. Plex is a client/server solution that provides almost zero config (so no folders need to be shared) and transcoding. But it has nothing to do with XBMC and you cannot (normally) use XBMC to access it. Plex Server is available in Syno's package manager, but it is reccommended you install the SPK from the plex website instead. The are native Plex client apps for most platforms - what do your clients look like? And to further complicate the issue there is a Plex plugin for XBMC that allows it to use a Plex server - but in most cases this won't bring anything more than installing Plex natively.
  23. All thank you very much for the help. The memory is Kingston KVR16E11K4 DDR3-1600 16 GB(1Gx72 ECC CL11 Server Memory Kit. "Are your disks full? If they are empty you can expext the speed to decrease a lot later..." -- the drives are completely empty. It is cerious that the speed will be slower later because I assumed this is some kind of RAID5 setup. "speed of HD, link aggregation, WOL, Hibernation..." I will try this out I do not think the SMC MB sever MB supports hibernation. It would nice to see if the drives spin down. "This sounds very slow - but not sure how to tweak XPE beyond mtu. Whats you'r array's read/write rate (dd)? -- do you know the dd command I can run from SSH to try? I have always stayed away from dd command due to erasing all the data. "Not sure that's (SSD Caching) available in 4.3" -- I see the option, hence wanted to try. "Is Beta 8 on v5 already or is it still 4.3 based as i believe? " -- No Beta8 is on 4.3. "But have fum storming the castle!" -- I wanted to beef up the system so if could do transcoding if needed. Again thanks for the insight. "I guess you should decide between Plex and XMBC, are'nt they providing the same service - Server video/audio?" -- My main purpose is to serve up XBMC data, only one of my TV's has Plex built in. "
  24. I had similar problems with dsm 5, so I went back to 4.3. Someone mentioned that this issue with video station not transcoding is most likely due to the serial number. I used a serial number generator for dsm 5 gnoboot and I think that may have been the problem. Not confirmed though, but worth a shot. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
On the Fliy Transcoding schafft? (720 oder 1080p?) Plane eigentlich auch mir ein N54l anzuschaffen... Bin hardwareseitig auch eher weniger der Bastler... Danke im Voraus. Gruß Kewl
