exactly enter iLo4 bios and enable virtual serial port to com1 in grub.cfg find the line set extra_args_3615='' and add between the '' this console=ttyS0,115200n8 than you should ssh to iLo4's ip address and login with your iLo admin account and in the command line type vsp and boot the gen8, you should see the log in the booting process.. once dsm has booted you can login with your synology root account and move those files.

information: migration from ds3615xs (1.02a and 6.1.1u1) to ds3617xs (1.02a2 and 6.1.1u1) doesn't work on baremetal, got error 13 while doing it.
-
upgraded from 6.1 u2 to 6.1.1 to 6.1.1 u1 con Gen8 baremetal directly from the dsm interface using jun 1.02a ds3615sx WORKED HERE had just to copy /lib/modules/update to /lib/modules to get ethernet working again.

thank you for the tip, had to use virtual serial console on my gen8 to restore the missing modules, everything is working fine and upgraded to update2.

Confirming this worked for me as well on my Gen8. I needed to get up to 6.1 so I could finally update to the newest phpVirtualBox, and this was my only option. I'm getting the "failed storage space" for my single SSD at boot, but everything runs fine so that's not really a big deal. thanks for sharing both!
-
and why would anyone do that?
-
everything fine on gen8 baremetal
-
from u5 to u7 directly on Gen8 baremetal, everything perfect.

You are so phunny but he is right

you should try a clean install, and check dhcp of your router because i had my gen8 set on static-ip and the upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0.2 reverted static to dynamic so i had trouble to access it remotely.. is your router giving the gen8 an ip?
-
using DD in linux does not allow you to write a usb boot correctly? that seems strange
-
why not? i use *.img to bootload my baremetal with no issues.
-
tested and everything is working as expected, upgraded my gen8 baremetal from 5.2 to 6.0.2-u3 with all data and config intact, no problem whatsoever, the only thing is that after the upgrade dsm changed my local ip to dhcp instead of let it static but it's not an issue, reverted back to static in 10 seconds. al packages working fine, update3 applied and rebooted with no issue, changed my filesystem to btrfs so i'm pretty happy edit: one last thing, how can i change max drive shown in the disk manager? it shows 12 slot, i wanted to limit it to 5. edit2: nevermind, synoinfo.conf had maxdrives set to 12, fixed
-
write xpenology to thumb drive, put usb and hdd in the n54L, start. you should not have any problem, the bootloader is the same for everybody and the system + data are already installed, it will boot as nothing happened (apart drivers issues).

working fine here, thanks lexyan

Hi mate, I just bought ASRock QC5000-ITX/PH, RAM and LSI. They're still on packages. Now looking for case and PSU (No U-NAS supplier in Spain). Please, let me one question. Did you manage to flash MAC to the QC5000? You know, for Syno valid MAC and WOL working. you dont need to patch, just fix the config in the bootloader

i have a gen8 and i didn't encounter any problem during installation.

that's bullshit.
