  1. But it's free with hp n40L you can use normal bios instead of modified bios and no hotswap il coming But the n40L's are no longer cheaper to buy as the £100 cashback offer has stopped making them £200+, hopefully they will offer the same cashback with the N54L.. Hi Mitt, how much it cost if you buy any component apart? cabine, mainborad, cpu ram, the hard trick is a real nas cabinet, they dont be cheap, if you use regular cabine, it's' cheap but you lost the "nas" type. When i decide to build my nas i'm starting to get some information about nas cabinet and i saw that they dont be cheap, so, my friends tell me about hp n40l, i buy on amazon for 190 € with 2 giga ram and one 250 Gbyte hdd for me the price was the rigth price, now the price grows up.

  3. Use hp N40L it's' "cheap" and it's ready to use, it comes with 4 bay, if you flash a modified bios, any bay could act as hot-swap bay. For home use it's' perfect, less power, less rumor, at list you can have 16TB of space if you use 4TB hDD , for some of more reliable, you have to buy dedicated cabinet with several hot-swap bay, put in some MB with dedicated controller to drive bays, compile kernel with the drivers to support the mb hardware, follow the istructions to install DSM.
  4. For my other project i have setup a complete boot server, so i decide to try to boot xpenologi via pxe , i dont know if somenone have alredy suggest this, but i think it's to simple use pxe instead of regular img file to try xpenology
  5. Hi tousmic, if you read topic about compiling kernel, you can found news about it, the simply way is: you have to build zImage kernel with a lot of hardware drivers to cover any piece of your MB, many people in this forum buy a HP N40L microserver that it's , for me, the best way to build home nas, if you need more hdd space you can build your own nas using special rack cabinet with many hot-swap bay , choose rigth mainboard, look for rigth chipse to include in kernel building.
  6. i think it' simple, download source and compile for x86 system.
  7. Hi, there is a particular thing because we are using DS3612xs_3202 instead of DSM_RS10613xs+_3202 in building fake-synology? if yes, what?

    synology bios

Hi, someone have tryed flash synology bios in some similar hardware?
  9. Hi tomek, it depends to the hardware you want support, many drivers are included in the kernel tree, some special hardware has own driver, this lasts comes like stand-alone drivers that you have to compile and add in /lib/modules folder on the nas, others types comes like patch to apply on the kernel tree, for what i saw it's enough compile on the kernel like modules and the game is on
  10. Me too, but not with xmbmc but with esxi or any other nfs client, in dmesg o saw a lot of undefined modules in nfsd.ko ( module file ) i suspect some strange trick in compiling options, could be usefull compile another fresh kernel following instructions on wiki with ALL the things that come from synology gpl source, aka, using bromlow config file like .config for kernel options
  11. it doesn't work at all. which dsm you are using?(version? where you get it from? nighthawk or odie82544)? can you post your grub.conf? thanks. all right, i answere my own question. you have to comment out chksum, vender and hw_model to make it works. Yes, i apoligize for wrong answer
  12. i Hope you use this nas in you house due to nature of hacks, i will avoid to install fake DSM on production environement because you dont have any support
  13. You are welcome for what i saw in file, just run make install and the kernel module goes in /lib/modules , successufuly will be gret if it's possibile to include the driver directly in the kernel, i think would be simple
  14. On my n40l (with patched bios) i have all 5 internal drives. 5'th hdd contains DSM with "trash" partition, other 4 drives contains all usefull files. Hi. Tell me how to modify the BIOS for N40l. Where to download the upgraded firmware for 5 sata. And how preproshit BIOS? http://homeservershow.com/forums/index. ... -features/
  15. try to disable from bios, i think the machin shutting down for erratic reading, if not, houston we have a problem!
  16. try viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17
  17. i Think it's easy, simply connect your hdd to your pc via some sort of usb--->sata bridge, use hdd-raw-tool, choose the rigth file and write onto hdd. I have a little question, during installation you have to remove usb key due to avoid rewriting of os installed on, how you can do the same with one hdd? maybe if you use a bay, you can unplug hdd, but i dont know if sata port near internal usb socket is hot-swap.
  18. i think you have to just decompress somewhere in some folder and run make, after, you can move .ko file in /lib/modules in syno
  19. yes, but you have to change one mac-addr of one of them according to documentation on this forum, if you want do some HA triyng mayne you have to change serial number of one of them
  20. I found a simple way to edit mac address and serial number. Look on your n40L via dsm in which way your usb key is mounted, go in mount point, look inside /boot/grub you will see grub.conf, edit, change serial number in boot command-line and add at the end of the command line, something like: mac1=aabbccddeeff comment out with (#) vender save, reboot maybe you serial number and macaddress are changed

    synobios

Hi, for what you know, it's' possible "emulate" /dev/synobios to avoid a lot of command failed when dsm start and try to ask something to /dev/synobios

    NFS error

Hi, someone knows about many errors in module nfsd.ko ? in my installation i saw a lot of unknown modules bla bla bla
  23. maybe your nic card is unknown , try to use boot img with more hardware, it contains more kernel modules another tips, try reading the usb key with one linux machine and add the mac address of your nic card in command line of menu.lst in /boot/grub folder on SYNOLOGY2 entry, simpli add at the end of command line something like : mac1=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff but it's mandatory that the syno_boot.img knows your network card. It's usefull use DSM find if you use a dhcp in your network.
  24. ext2fs, but i prefere reading from linux machine, it's more simple manage file in usb key, edit and modify
  25.
