About Me

DSM 7.2-64570 Update 3, arcloader, Intel Xeon E5-2673 v3, Huananzhi QD3
  2. Perhaps you want to take the loader.img file that was created in the middle. However, the method via loader.img is the old method. You need to apply a time machine to use older versions of redpill-load and tinycore-redpill, but this may not be easy. Your Netgear Pro4 NAS does not support USB booting? It seems to be a 4-bay product so you can use 4 disks. The following functions have been completed with the recently added functions to mshell. "Inject Bootloader to Syno Disk" I haven't uploaded a manual or guide yet. I was planning to upload it after completing more stability tests. Today, as stability has been verified to some extent, I will upload the manual. This method allows the bootloader to boot using only the hard disk. You will need at least 2 disks. Currently, the function of injecting with SHR diss alone has not been completed. At least one BASIC or JBOD type disk is required. How about completing the bootloader injection to these hard disks on a PC with USB bootloader enabled and then transferring these disks to the Netgear Pro4 NAS?
  3. is there a trick to getting LSI controllers to detect new drives being added on the SA6400 image? I was able to boot on the ds3622 image but I was having difficulty creating new volumes, which seems to work better on the SA6400 build. Just need new drive detection to work. Any thoughts? For context the LSI controllers are 9305-24i and 9305-16e - both are running the latest firmware for UEFI and legacy - and are non-raid HBA cards. The system sees the drives attached when booting up but when adding drives when the machine is on, the drive is not detected until reboot.
  4. I'm trying to setup a DS918+ but my Gigabyte motherboard has 5 SATA instead of 6 as one is dedicated to an NVME. I'm getting this error message. I was able to install successfully but I'm concerned that in the future this port might cause an issue. Any idea on how to resolve this? tc@box:~$ ./rploader.sh satamap Found "00:17.0 Intel Corporation Device 43d2 (rev 11)" Detected 6 ports/1 drives. Bad ports: 1. 5. Hi all, This is my first attempt at installing Xpenology, I have a DS918+ for my own use and would like to convert an old Windows Home Server for a family member. I'm guessing the drivers for CN896 North Bridge or VIA VT8251 South Bridge are not loaded, it's picked up one of them as "JMicron Technology Corp. 6. Hi guys, I have XPEnology installed on a baremetal Gen8 Microserver. Until yesterday I had a stable running DS3622xs+ with DSM 7.1.1-42962. Decided to upgrade to 7.2.0-64570 and at the same time to add the 5th SATA port on the motherboard to the satamap in order to use it for the Survaillance station. Built the loader pretty easily following this Tutorial: Install/Migrate to DSM 7.x with TinyCore RedPill (TCRP) Loader Restarted, bootloader worked, Synology Assistent found the DS, I connected to it and installed DSM 7.2.0-64570 manually from the file I've downloaded from Synology download section beforehand. Restarted again and... the problem. The DS is found but only in Recoverable status. When I chose to Recover it starts installing DSM for a second or two, than restarts and 10 mins later - Something went wrong Then connecting to the DS again just to find it in Recoverable status again. Obviously something's wrong but I can't figure it out myself. Am I missing something in the bootloader? Or else? Can anybody help to identify and resolve the issue? 7. I have old tower PC running baremetal DSM 7.x with an SHR storage pool and two volumes. I constantly hear the drives grinding away from where it sits across the room from me, but cannot figure out what is causing this activity. I've tried shutting down every docker container as well as any running package that I am able to stop, still the spinning continues. The noise is a little annoying but not unbearable, but I am mainly concerned with premature drive failure if these drives are constantly reading/writing 24/7. How to I figure out what the culprit is? Task manager doesn't seem to show a level of activity comparable to the constant grind I am hearing.
  8. Why didn't you go to storage manager and select swap drive? You could have replaced them one at a time if you had RAID 1 without loosing any data. Its takes a while to copy things, but it could have been done in a couple days depending on how much data was stored on the original drives. Is there a reason you still use DSM 6.2.1 and have not upgraded to 7.2?
  9. Hi: That could be an option, but the R320 is limited to four drives and i want more expansion capabilities. Regards.
  10. Anyone got either TCRP 0.9.2.9 or ARPL 1.0-beta2 working on a HP Microserver GEN10? I'm currently on TCRP 0.8.0.5 and DSM 7.1-42661 Update 4. I was trying to update TCRP (or switch to ARPL) before upgrading to DSM 7.1.1-42962. While both loaders build and boot OK (meaning I can reach the NAS over the network), neither one detect any drive connected to the Marvell 88SE92xx controller - DSM complains that no drives are connected. The SSD connected to the other SATA adapter, meant for a CD/DVD drive, gets detected OK. TCRP 0.9.2.9 reports no drives connected to the Marvell controller when running ./rploader.sh satamap now. ARPL does the same in it's equivalent step.
  11. Hi: First, thanks for your answer. Anserina your questions: -As i said, the scenario will be to replace the DX513 expansion unit and use in a xpenology as a backup for the DS716+II files. Also, i prefere VMM from synology, because it's much more user friendly, easier to schedule and manage snapshots than EXSi. Also current situation with vmware and QUALCOMM does not pleases me. Now, here the fault is mine. A simple typo gives this. The CPU is an E-2407v2, not the 2470v2 Also, the dell R320 has only space for 4 drives and 3 of them are in use. One with the boot drive and 2 with the storage SSD (2*1TB in RAID1). Regards.
  12. Dear Tomte, I think that Futro 920 can use more hard drives. So, it has the PCIe port. What do you think about plugging the PCIe-SATA or PCIe-RAID controller on it? The controllers may be like that: Simple SATA controller on ASM1064 chip: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005557641758.html RAID controller: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005028945188.html But it will need the PCIe rizer, and additional case for hard drives with separate power supply for HDDs. It will be in future, when I will need to expand my storage... Regards, Oleg
  13. I should have tried it with a native hard drive from the beginning. I ended up wasting several days by testing in the VMWARE FUSION virtual environment for a more convenient test. The main purpose of Redpill bootloader hard disk porting is to port the bootloader to the hard disk without using a USB stick. In a virtual environment, it is sufficient to use a virtual Sata disk as a boot loader anyway, so the function of porting it to a disk seems unnecessary. Anyway, due to the nature of Redfill lkm, it synoboots the moment a Sata SSD is seen. A healthy disk disappears. Only those who have at least two BASIC or JOB type disks in Native can use it. I will improve the functionality, distribute it soon, and also upload a user guide.

  15. Hi all. I have a Dell T320 server running proxmox (1.8ghz, 48gb ram, 8 * 2tb hard drives, 2 * 256gb ssd - OS raid) and want to do an install of xpenology with the latest dsm 7. Is this even possible? On a few forum posts I now that some users are advised that as the cpu architecture is sandy bridge your stuck with dsm 6.2.2. But looking at the data sheets on here, it looks like running the ds3622xs will support any x86 processor? Many thanks for your advice. Yours, Michael
  16. However, the new method attempted by TTG, the Redpill development group, is not a USB loader. The development that enabled the use of the Sata DOM bootloader was hindered. Among Sata disks, the disk that exists first is always recognized as the bootloader. So, the BASIC type disk to which this boot loader has been transplanted also has to be partitioned by Synoboot, the boot loader. There is a phenomenon in which the front disk disappears. (The data is not damaged.) This is implemented on the lkm side, and can be viewed as a type of fake technology. A few days ago, I looked into the source code with the intention of recompiling lkm and improving it. It seems that when the TTG group first implemented this Sata DOM Fake feature, they thought it was crazy. However, I think they left a comment at the end saying that it has stabilized a lot and is usable now. https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/redpill-lkm/blob/master/shim/boot_dev/fake_sata_boot_shim.c /** * A crazy attempt to use SATA disks as proper boot devices on systems without SATA DOM support * * BACKGROUND * The syno-modifed SCSI driver (sd.c) contains support for so-called boot disks. It is a logical designation for drives * separated from normal data disks. Normally that designation is based on vendor & model of the drive. The native SATA * boot shim uses that fact to modify user-supplied drive to match that vendor-model and be considered bootable. * Likewise similar mechanism exists for USB boot media. Both are completely separate and work totally differently. * While both USB storage and SATA are SCSI-based systems they different in the ways devices are identified and pretty * much in almost everything else except the protocol. * * * HOW DOES IT WORK? * This shim performs a nearly surgical task of grabbing a SATA disk (similarly to native SATA boot shim) and modifying * its descriptors to look like a USB drive for a short while. The descriptors cannot be left in such state for too * long, and have to be reverted as soon as the disk type is determined by the "sd.c" driver. This is because other * processes actually need to read & probe the drive as a SATA one (as you cannot communicate with a SATA device like * you do with a USB stick). * In a birds-eye view the descriptors are modified just before the sd_probe() is called and removed when ida_pre_get() * is called by the sd_probe(). The ida_pre_get() is nearly guaranteed [even if the sd.c code changes] to be called * very early in the process as the ID allocation needs to be done for anything else to use structures created within. * * * HERE BE DRAGONS * This code is highly experimental and may explode at any moment. We previously thought we cannot do anything with * SATA boot due to lack of kernel support for it (and userland method being broken now). This crazy idea actually * worked and after many tests on multiple platforms it seems to be stable. However, we advise against using it if USB * is an option. Code here has many safety cheks and safeguards but we will never consider it bullet-proof. * * * References: * - https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/core-api/idr.html (IDs assignment in the kernel) * - drivers/scsi/sd.c in syno kernel GPL sources (look at sd_probe() and syno_disk_type_get()) */ So, if it is possible to have a SATA disk at the front as a dummy, I am trying to do it like this. As a first test yesterday, I attempted to connect to the loop device with a dummy img and acquire /dev/sda first when the kernel is loaded as shown below. I tested it within the Friend kernel, and the script works as expected. However, it failed to obtain /dev/sda as a symbolic link first. https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tcrpfriend/blob/main/buildroot/board/tcrpfriend/rootfs-overlay/etc/udev/rules.d/99-custom.rules https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tcrpfriend/blob/main/buildroot/board/tcrpfriend/rootfs-overlay/root/load-sda-first.sh Now, as a second test, we excluded the Friend kernel and injected the above content into initrd-dsm as shown below to conduct the same test in Junior, which is the DSM kernel stage. https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tinycore-redpill/commit/34ed365357820d7c54552ce2114208670805ff13 Do you think this method will be effective?
  17. ARC Wiki tell: "SataPortMap & SataRemap only necessary for nonDT Models". Linux documents tell, that DT is a part of Linux kernel (compiled text file) As I understand, for changing device tree I need kernel recompiling (loader's kernel or DSM's kernel? ) at least it's unavaliable for me yet. OK, let it be 1-12, 39-44, 71-76 drives numbers in DT-mode, generally they work well.
  18. Hello experts! I've got a many years old xpenology setup going right now in the same case running DSM6. Very happy with it, but it's time for a better CPU and some new drives. This one ideally would be using DSM7. Hopefully hardware transcoding with the integrated gpu would work in emby and plex. 1-3 streams at a time. SSD for cache if it makes sense. Maybe another SSD to host the OS, but not sure if that's possible? PSU I'll figure out later. Hoping the 2.5gbe on the motherboard will work. My network isn't 10gbe, so I don't need it, but definitely not opposed to moving to it. 19. I am stuck. I built my first xpenology server from a udemy course about 5 years ago. It was DSM 5.2. It ran great until... The flash drive that the operating system was on accidentally was bent and no longer works. So now I have these hard drives with all my data and I have no way to access them. The udemy course taught me how to set up the files needed for DSM 5.2. Would anyone happen to have those files so I can set up a new USB flash drive? I really an inexperienced. And need help.
  20. Hi nemesis122, I have to admit, I haven't touched the server since this last post. Divorce and my busy work schedule got in the way. I am wondering if you would still be will to a teamviewer session to get my server back to functionality. Just a reminder but full post above, "The flash drive that the operating system was on accidentally was bent and no longer works. So now I have these hard drives with all my data and I have no way to access them." I really would appreciate any help you could give and I would definitely send you a gift card to your favorite spot. -me
  21. So I actually tried to boot with the latest loader by just keeping my disk 0 (SATA 1:0, meant to be that volume 1) without any disk. When I try to recover it I get the "No drives detected in DS3622xs+". I feel like this is the source of all my issues. Does anyone know how to solve? In Junior UI I can see from dmesg: and I am just no sure a re-install would work.
  22. I'm gonna try to get a formula to do it. Now I happen to be lucky and have many BIOS versions of the DS1515+.Read right off the chips. I use them when restoring corrupted ones. I can say. The bios update when you install DSM it is in the DSM.pat file update. Mainly on the later DSM 7.x Pat files. So Synology is placing the bios update in the pat file. What I am worried about is one thing I tested with the script above. This works perfect on the latest release of DSM 7.2. But I suspect it will brick the system when DSM7.3 comes out. As a rewrite will happen to the bios. Synology has been getting tricky with this. Mainly to support their drive compatibility. So only you can use their drives in the system for the future. On newer models. Not on older units as much. But it still makes changes to the bios when you update past DSM 7.2x or higher. As they are released. Now faking the bios as a DSM 7.3, and doing the pat file as 7.3. The system bricked on my test side. It booted. But the drive array was lost. And all bay lights lit solid. So I had to reinstall the old bios that had DSM 6.2.4. And it came back. ANd now is normal again. The fake DSM7.3 did something weird to the drive array. All bay lights lit up, and no drive detected. So make sure you have a backup of your old bios just in case. The chip is a N25Q064A 3v. Now I was also thinking. Why not keep the old DSM. And just never do anything inside the NAS. But change the app to install in your NAS. Like take a DS1517+ app you might like. And change a few things on it. And it install it on your 1515+. Much to research and try. Also a quick note. When it comes to updating to DSM 7.x.x We never recommend to update past DSM 6.2.4. As you end up losing so much. Photostation gone. To a rinky thing called Photos. Below is a copy and paste of my Reddit post about this topic. Something to read if you have time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note to admins of Xepenology. Let me know if I ever wrote anything wrong her to remove. Will do ASAP. r/Synology_Service: TO UPDATE TO DSM7, OR NOT TO UPDATE. THAT IS THE QUESTION Alot of NAS owners, and even my own customers always debate this one topic, and even ask me about it if it is recommended. You won't believe it. But I always say NO. Don't update your NAS. Lets look at the pro and cons. First the pro's. DSM7 has a all new look. Feature rich, and has the latest updates to bug fixes and security flaws. Its kinda like going from Windows 10 to Windows 11. And that's pretty much where the story ends with DSM7. DSM 6 has all the same features. And also has its own updates. Like the recent update 7 added to DSM6. So you end up with DSM 6.2.4 Update 7. Like Windows that do security updates and feature packs. You're probably wondering why I said don't update? For 1. You can never go back that's for sure. Unless you know how to reprogram the Daughter board on the NAS. eDOM. You are on DSM7 forever. SO some of the bad in updating. DSM7 added some white lists for drives. And makes drive compatibility a issue. It doesn't carry support for WIFI dongle use. Surveillance Station comes with a loss in license counts. Photostation is gone to a rinky dink app called Photos. Doesn't work with the app anymore. The list is endless. And at your loss. Why I say. Never update unless you know you really have to. And need it. Why DSM6 is the best robust OS Synology made. Even though my real favorite is the older DSM 5.2. I personally think that was the best they ever made. During their heyday. It was tops. But 6.2.4 is the overall, all NAS best DSM ever made. Last of the good ones. Alot of owners really need to ask themselves. Do I need this update? Is my NAS doing ok where I am? If there's something in the latest update that applies to you. Then do it. Forget the security flaws. Nobody ever gets hacked in NAS history. Ever saw a post on one? NO!. Hackers want PC's. Not disk stations. Besides. What's to hack on so many of these. Your videos? Or pictures. What good is that stuff to hackers? Hackers want stuff that gets them into your emails and money. Like your PayPal account. Not your movies or pics. These are just Synology's way of getting you to update, so they can slowly migrate you over to the new "get our drives only and apps route" in my opinion. Yea that ever shrinking drive compatibility list. And yes. the future for Synology will be to use their drives only. No 3rd party drives like WD and Seagate. They are working on their own drives now as I write. And now even the current DSM7 omits many drives. So you can't use them like on the older DSM's. Also the apps. A Lot of this started as licensing for apps were expiring from Synology to 3rd party developers. Like surveillance station. Synology didn't want to pay for another license. But on the old DSM. You can still use it. This is just one app affected. There are more. Plus. Updates can be a issue. They are known to crash NAS's if something gets corrupted. I see it alot. Imagine you are sleeping during an automatic update, and or even there. Just to see a blue blinking power light forever. DSM and even app updates are like doing PC bios updates. If just one bit is off, and the checksum is not correct. Its a fail. you now lost your NAS, and anything else it can do. Has to go for service. And if you are out of warranty. Synology won't fix it. Their support centers are only RMA work under warranty. They aren't going to solder a new Bios or Daughter board on your NAS. Nope. Ends up here where we do that kind of work. Board level repairs. Chip changes. Bioses, you name it. So look at where you station is today. Is it doing its job like it always has? Then don't touch was isn't broken. Or decide. Do I really need this update to DSM7 from my old 6.2.4? Most likely not, and like 95% of the NAS owners out there. You don't need it. We also started to see this on the resale side. Where older Synology NAS's selling used. Have gone up alot in price. Even from the ones I sell. Like $400-$600 for a DS1512+. Same price as a 1817+ or newer. I also get many requests for NAS's only on DSM 6.2.4 or earlier. They don't want DSM 7 or higher. If its on DSM7. This kinda hinders sales for these. As only a select group of new comers usually get them. Not die hard Synology fans. No they don't want DSM7 if you truly know your NAS. And use the apps alot. Make sure you turn off automatic updates on your NAS. And take control. Don't let Synology do the update. You decide what needs updating if need be. If its working leave it. Forget the security update crap from Synology in my opinion. 99% chance it doesn't apply to you anyways. Today! I get many that come here who want downgrades. That too is rising.
  23. Hi all, I know this is a well-worn topic, but I have not been able to find a specific answer on my situation. I understand how and why the SataPortMap & DiskIdxMap fields are used, (well, I think I understand it enough...) But my questions is: How does one go about determining what these values should be? I am currently running a: · TinyCore RedPill Loader with M-Shell (Latest as of 20240305) · Asus P11C-M4L with all SATA controllers turned off in the BIOS · ASUS PIKE II 3008 8-port SAS HBA card · 12GB/s SGPIO Expander hot-swap backplane that the connects back to the PIKE II card via 2 MiniHD Cables · 12 SAS disks attached to the this backplane · All 12 disks are being presented to Xpenology as individual disk. With: SataPortMap: 1 DiskIdxMap: 00 I end with DSM detecting all 12 disks, but the disk count starts at 02 and goes through to 13. Like other users I am trying to configure my system to use ports 01-12 I have read some comments suggesting that SAS configurations do not utilise the SataPort Map setting, however I find if I manipulate these settings, does affect the disk layout in DSM. As I have disabled my onboard SATA controllers I believe the PIKE Card is the first control which holds 8 ports, evern though via the SAS backplane it has 12 disks attached. As SataPortMap only uses 1 digit to configure the ports, I assume I need to use: SataPortMap: 8 SataPortMap: 1 DiskIdxMap: 00 Assigns my 12 disks from: sdb through to sdm and SataPortMap: 8 DiskIdxMap: 00 Assigns my 12 disks from: sdd through to sdo So these values are affecting my DSM configuration, what I do not understand is how to calculate the HEX values for the DiskIdxMap. I believe setting DiskIdxMap: 00 means that the first disk detected should be assigned to sda. Ssh-ing into the DSM, there is no sda listed, so I don’t believe there are any other disk controllers at play here. Have I misunderstood a concept here? Is there any glaringly obvious I have missed or misunderstood? Cheers, Leon
  24. Now I add 3rd ASM1166 card (PCIe4x) and has Discs 71-76 in DSM. As I understand without satamap configured it work in DT mode, but i has no search results on forum about device tree manual configure. How I can remap drives 39-44 to 13-18, 71-76 to 19-24 and disable all useless, if needed?
  25. Yes I use my old mpcie ASM1062 x2 SATA (see my last post) with x1 SATA build-in PC and x1 msata build-in PC, but I use only 3 drives in SSD format. I just test with 3 tasks AI at this moment, and CPU up at 80% but stay at 2Ghz max, turbo doesn't seen to work. For people interested, you can buy this mini PC here: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/1005006220488959.html (the msata slot is on the other side of motherboard, you have MSATA + MVE/M2 + MPCIE SLOTS !)
