    hi.

have virtio-9p included with this loader ?

It seems not. Maybe check pocopico repo.

The extension jg.acpid was found. However, the extension index has no recipe for ds3615xs_42661 platform.

  2. @pocopico When I migrated from 6.2.3 to 7.0.1 the tinycore image was at version 0.4.4.

Updating from 7.0.1 to 7.1, I run the update now and fullugrade commands on the existing 0.4.4 image and did not download the image version 0.4.6.

Everything went well I just want to know if there is an issue if I remain on 0.4.4...

does my user_config.json get saved during backup? and does it restored during clean command? or do I need to always replace config with my config for all future updates repairs etc to rploader?

    What I noticed when I updated to 7.1 is that the user_config.json was replaced during the "fullupgrade" command. The clean command did not replace my config. The "fullupgrade" command creates a backup of your previous files though somewhere in /home/tc/.../old.xxxx.{date}

    Heyyy

As a long time xpenology user I'm happy, but also sureprised, to hear about this project. I'm running xpenology virtualized on 3 different devices, all recognized as genuine devices using mac adresses and serial numbers that are genuine. So basically everything works like real synology boxes of 6.2.3 - all using image DS3517xs

I have held off any experiments with my devices but now since finding this project I'm interested in trying DSM 7.x soon..

Reading the first post does not give a lot of information ont he state of this mproject and the stability of running a xpenology install for DSM 7.x

So my initial question, without reading through all 158 pages of this thread is: Where can I get a good overall update of how good state this project is in. Is it yet recommended to run on "production" devices, as stable as I've been running xpenology DSM 6.x for several years and with awesome uptime on these virtualized DS3617xs devices?

Should I hold off just a bit longer? Are there any good tutorials in how to test this out anywhere?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and giving some overall summary of the current state.

Best regards and thanks for all the hard work!

To keep it simple... ThorGroup, the developer(s) of RedPill never came back since last October I guess. At the time the project was in a late alpha stage going to early beta stage.

They heavily tested RedPill on Proxmox and at the time everything was working fine and stable.

After that the community took over...

Is it recommended to run on "production"? I will answer the same way as I did to others before you. Even is Jun's Loader or RedPill loader or whatever loader the risk that something might go wrong is always there... but as you said Jun's loader has been running stable for me, you and many others for years. Same goes for RedPill. You can install it to a VM or as Baremetal it works.

Now about directions: You can find here the amazing work done by @pocopico and many others that helped him to make it super easy to install the red pill loader and add additional extensions and many other goodies and also a detailed guide written by @Peter Suh

  5. I believe the idea is the same. When you have 2 Real Synologies and 1 dies when you remove the drives and you install them to the other one it will detect that the drives were installed on a different Synology and it will ask you to migrate or something.

Of course I do not think it's possible to just jump from DSM 5 to DSM 7...

    Hi,

I installed DSM7.0.1 as a proxmox vm, running good, but I have an issue. I can not shutdown this vm, (I only can login DSM and shutdown from there). Anybody find a power button .spk for this DSM 7.0.1? Please advise. thanks.

I am not a 100% sure but I think when you build the loader you need to add the acpid extension. If you have the time create a test VM and install the below extensions and check if it works. On my Unraid VM it works even on DS918+ DSM 7.1

Hi Guys, been using Xpenology for a long while now, even considering buyng real synology, i have it on old computer (maybe 10years old) but with good specs.

the biggest fear i have, what if my machine suddenly decide to stop working? is possible to instal DSM on a new PC? same version of DSM... IDK, wanna be ready for that situation,,

any of you had similiar experience?

sorry if its in wrong section, was unable to find this kind of question, acc made just now

    Thank you

Even if you take the drives from the crashed PC (by crash I mean any other hardware except the drives of course) and install them to a real Synology or XPEnology it will migrate with no issue.

Same issue here on Proxmox .

DS3622xs working fine on same hardware, same procedure . Can’t get Ds918+ 7.1 working from fresh or using postupdate , 7.0.1 working ok

Can’t find Hard Drive with DS920+ (Added virtio ext )

    So do I...

As you wish, I just approved the tutorial guide section with a new topic.
I'm still waiting for approval and I don't know how to avoid rejection because I haven't written a new topic in a tutorial.
I think I'll have to wait and see.

Thank you. Hopefully with the help of the Mods you can write the guides and update them as you go along and the guides are not bombarded by issues.

Maybe you want @pocopico's  his own guide.
He entrusted the installation guide to me.
Please try the installation guide above and raise the exact problem.

@Peter Suh if this is the case then I recommend you to add the guides into a different topic so that it's not mixed with all the issues and is easier for all the users to find them.

  11. Something needs to be done with 7.1... We need a guide with clear instructions how to do it without any issues.

All I see in the last pages is users failing and running a bunch of TC commands which might or might not be correct.

  12. On my first posts I mentioned that Virtualisation now days has advanced a lot. You can pass-through that LSI card to a VM also... I believe if you pass-through the LSI the Hard Disks connected on that LSI will appear on your virtual DSM as actual drives because you are not passing through the drives like me. Those drives will look like they are physically connected to the VM and you will be able to see the SMART values also.

I believe Proxmox is a lot easier to setup than ESXI.

  13. Indeed what you are asking is correct and I do not know the answer when you pass portions of your disk space to the VM but maybe the below examples will help but I am not entirely sure if my assumptions are correct.

When you pass-through entire disks you do not pass the ports. Therefore, if a disk is on port #4 on your Mobo on the VM it will display as #1 for example.

For my Virtual DS918+ I am passing through the entire disks (not portions/ I believe the SATA protocol is virtual) but this does not mean you pass through also the SMART values... so if a drive fails you might not get a warning that it failed. The message that the drive has failed I will get it on the Hypervisor (Unraid) because I can see the actual SMART values from that level.

Regarding the RAID protection since I am passing through the entire disk not virtual portions of the disk the RAID protection is valid.

When you pass portions of a disk of course it seems that you "trick" DSM thinking that the given disks are 2 separate Hard Disks when it's not and the raid protection makes no sense when both virtual disks are from the same Hard Disk. If the physical disk fails the virtual will fail also.

But as I mentioned on the previous paragraph on the Hypervisor maybe those hard disks are already on a raid protection...

Therefore, if a drive fails, your DSM will not work but your data are protected due to the raid protection of the Hypervisor. You replace the drive on the Hypervisor the array will rebuild and the 2 virtual disks will be available again on your virtual DSM.

I hope all that makes sense...

In theory, when you pass through portions of a disk that is already in Raid (does not matter 1,5,6 etc) from the Hypervisor it makes no sense to create another raid on the DSM. In my case though which I am passing through entire disks not portions of a disk that are not already raid protected by the hypervisor it makes sense to use the Raid of the DSM.

    7. Adjusted the LED indicator for drives' health status. When a drive's health status is critical or failing, the indicator will show static orange.
    8. Windows 2000 domains are no longer supported.
    9. Removed the "Synchronize with an NTP server every time a domain user signs in" option for Domain/LDAP advanced settings. Users can configure the "Synchronize with NTP server" option at Regional Options > Time instead.
    10. Added support for the UPS power-off function at Control Panel > Hardware & Power > UPS.
    11. Synology Storage Replication Adapter can only be used with DSM 7.0.1 or earlier versions. If you are using or plan to use Synology Storage Replication Adapter, please continue to use the current DSM version.
    12. To create a new Virtual DSM machine for DSM 7.1, Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) must be updated to version 2.6. Virtual DSM machines running DSM 7.0 or earlier versions can be directly updated to DSM 7.1 without updating VMM.
    13. Surveillance Station must run version 8.2.11-7327 to be compatible with this update. To avoid compatibility issues, Surveillance Station 9.0-7519 users must wait for the 9.0 Official release expected in May before updating to DSM 7.1-42661. (Learn more)

    What’s New

    1. SSD Cache Groups can be allocated to multiple volumes, allowing for more flexible management of SSD cache capacity.
    2. Storage Manager now supports the management of the drives and storage of both active server and passive server in a Synology High Availability cluster.
    3. Added support for Btrfs (Peta Volume) in Active Backup for Business and Synology High Availability.
    4. If there is a file system error, DSM will unmount the volume to run file system checks without interrupting the services on other volumes.
    5. Reduced the minimum threshold for low capacity notification from 5% to 3%.
    6. Added support for custom OIDC (OpenID Connect) settings to integrate DSM with external SSO servers.
    7. Added support for the RTF editor to allow users to preview notification message content and style in real-time when editing.
    8. Added support for bypass traverse checking at Control Panel > File Services > Advanced to allow users to traverse folders and access permitted files or subfolders.
    9. Supports specifying domains from the list of trusted domains to synchronize domain data.
    10. Added the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+00:00) time zone option at Control Panel > Regional Options > Time.
    11. Added the synchronization status between DSM and NTP servers at Control Panel > Regional Options > Time.
    12. Added icons on the taskbar to indicate ongoing background tasks that might affect system performance.
    13. Users can now open tabs directly from search results in Control Panel.
    14. Supports automatically updating the domain database and syncing domain data regularly. For Synology NAS that are used to create domains, the "Update User Groups/Lists" option in Control Panel > Domains/LDAP will be disabled by default after updating to DSM 7.1.
    15. Starting from Advanced Media Extensions 2.0.0, users must sign in to their Synology Accounts to install HEVC and AAC codecs, which allows for the playback of certain file formats in multimedia packages and Surveillance Station. (Learn more)

    Limitation

    1. The update progress bar on a Synology High Availability cluster might not display the actual progress percentage. This won't affect the update progress.
    2. To prevent playback issues caused by the updated support mechanism of Advanced Media Extensions 2.0.0, Surveillance Station 9.0-7519 users must wait for the 9.0 Official release expected in May before updating to DSM 7.1-42661. (Learn more)

Why some run on a VM?

I am running a RP on baremetal, I would like to keep testing and help, but I dont have any vm setup.

Back in the day (Jun Loader) when we did not have the RedPill loader where you can add extensions and load additional drivers, it was a lot easier to install DSM on a Virtual Machine due to the drivers. For ethernet you had to use the e1000 driver which is supported by default by DS918+ and no need to worry which ethernet chips are compatible with DS918+.

Other reason, like my self, I have an AMD 3900X CPU with 12Cores/24Threads, there is no reason to utilize all 12 cores for DSM, instead I allocate 8vCores and use the other vCores for other VMs like Windows Servers, Dockers etc...

With now days virtualization you can pass through ethernet cards, hard disks, GPUs and other PCI cards.

In terms of performance you might not notice any difference between a baremetal.

Whether you use a VM or Baremetal it's a choice and there is nothing wrong either way...

How is this supposed to work? I don't see a network interface? Which one should be used? Virtio or virtio-net?

Also, how does the serial output work on UnRaid? I can't seem to make it work unfortunately.

They asked me to provide an Unraid XML configuration that works.

No-one asked for something specific. There is no network interface because I am passing-through one of my 4 ethernet and I am not using a Virtual one. If you want to use a virtual one then yest virtio-net should be enough.

In unraid in order to access the serial output run the following command "virsh console THE-NAME-OF-YOUR-VM" for example virsh console DS918+

VID/PID set correctly, Sataportmap set correctly. PAT file checksum coresponds with sum for pat file which was used to build loader.

@gadreel @seanone could You post some VM configuration for Unraid?
There where a lot of problems on Unraid even with 6.2 and Jun's loader, but no one wants to share their knowledge.
I don't know is this a community forum.
Someone asked on Unraid forum, but noone answered, same here.

@VRx666 Find attached a sample Unraid XML configuration...

    Thank you for the info!
The 6.2.3 is the one in the first post in this thread, correct?
And now for the absolute 100% noob question:  Do I just place the img-file on the USB stick, or do I need to edit something in the file and compile it with ... etc ? If so, where might I find the programs for it?

For Jun's Loader yes, you need to open one of the partitions and edit the grub file with the appropriate S/N and Mac Address.
