huskyg Posted April 30 Share #1 Posted April 30 i have a i5 6 CPUs x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-9400 CPU @ 2.90GHz 32 gb ram and 4 tb ssd ESXI host. currently running a vmware, but i want to leave cvmware behind so i was thinking what if iturn it into a powerful nas+vmhost combo. which synology nas is the closest to this , and if it can run virtual machines ( windows and linux)
Trabalhador Anonimo Posted April 30 Share #2 Posted April 30 With this CPU, 6x6, you will be very limited with number of VMs at the same time. The DS3622xs+ is the most flexible.

VMWare works better with virtual machines than DSM
huskyg Posted May 1 Author Share #4 Posted May 1 wmvare went for a subscription so in my home lab it wont be an option anymore. proxmox or DSM since i dont need high performance thought maybe a dsm was a better option especually since ive been using synology since 2014
Trabalhador Anonimo Posted May 1 Share #5 Posted May 1 (edited) You can try Windows + Virtualbox (raw disk) + DSM. I have a test lab with windows 10, virtualbox and DSM (3622xps). Windows and virtual box are in a SSD and 5x 500GB in a raw disk connection on Virtualbox running DSM. I set bios (on host) to power on after power returns if it is lost and make DSM (VM in virtualbox) to start at windows startup. It works like charme. Orphée Posted May 2 Share #6 Posted May 2 You should not consider Synology VMM as a real option... ESXI / Promox VE are the way to go to use virtualisation on daily basis.
