i915.ko backported driver for intel 10th gen (DS918+ ver 7.0.1 up3)

Recommended Posts

so i tried to passthough the iGPU in a w10 vm, the hypervisor is the same ofc.. quicksync works just fine on windows, it's correctly detected and used by handbrake

[17:15:25] CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-10100T CPU @ 3.00GHz
[17:15:25] - Intel microarchitecture Comet Lake
[17:15:25] - logical processor count: 1
[17:15:25] Intel Quick Sync Video support: yes, gpu list: 0
[17:15:25] Intel Quick Sync Video integrated adapter with index 0
[17:15:25] - Intel Media SDK hardware: API 1.35 (minimum: 1.3)
[17:15:25] - Decode support: h264 hevc (8bit: yes, 10bit: yes)
[17:15:25] - H.264 encoder: yes
[17:15:25] - preferred implementation: hardware (1) via D3D11
[17:15:25] - capabilities (hardware): breftype icq+la+i+downs vsinfo opt1 opt2+mbbrc+extbrc+trellis+ib_adapt+nmpslice
[17:15:25] - H.265 encoder: yes (8bit: yes, 10bit: yes)
[17:15:25] - preferred implementation: hardware (1) via D3D11
[17:15:25] - capabilities (hardware): bpyramid icq vsinfo opt1

so it must be something wrong with the backport, maybe not working as it should, i'm gonna try to spinup an ubuntu vm and check with the newer kernel if quicksync works. bummer.

Awesome. For everyone’s benefit what did you do to make it work in the VM

the gpu passthrough was working fine on Windows (detection, drivers install and so on) so that could not be an Hypervisor problem (VMWare ESXi 7.0f3), vt-d and vt-x enabled, could not figure out why it says "Killed" in Syno terminal, and it still does.

i changed the ARPL boot from bios to efi (hypervisor was also already efi boot) and thats the only thing i did actually (and fix the *.bin wrong header files problem in arpl-addons), recreated the docker container with the /dev/dri mapped (permission correctly fixed), enabled the hw transcoding and encoding and now it shows the damn (hw) while streaming.

i have to spin up a DVA test vm to see if face recognition also works in Surveillance Station, seems that the ds920+ i'm using does not have it, bummer.

i did not test Video Station but i dont actually use that, i guess it "should" also work.

Ok, that’s really good to know.

So the drivers are fine 👍🏻

wrt video station, it has own issues and ffmpeg needs to be patched. I haven’t had much success making that work. For me, plex/jellyfin  hw transcoding was critical and those have been tested to work.

oh yeah i'm not gonna bother either with that thing.. i'm gonna try to see if tdarr is using quicksync also.

edit: also, to make the iGPU passthough working correctly in ESXi i had to issue a "esxcli system settings kernel set -s vga -v FALSE" from terminal and reboot the supervisor.. it disables the ESXi video terminal function (no hdmi/dp output once booted) but it gives the igpu the ability to be passed to a vm without issues.

multi-vm passthough is not supported tho, but that's probably related to Intel limitation.

understood. Thank you for the above and testing it out. Enjoy :-)

Tested this driver in 920+ 7.1.1-42961, but not working anymore, can you fix it?

I'm using i3-10105

Is the version for Linux changed in the new DSM ?
can you give me the output for uname -r

also, was it working in previous versions ?

do you see any error messages ? (dmesg, cat /var/log/messages )

should be the same as before

it kernel panics and stops the vm for me also, i could not figure out what that was until i rebuild arpl without the igpu drivers and it boots fine now.

hmm then it must be something else that would have changed. I am still on 7.0.1 and not updating for now.

what error messages are you getting

This looks like the same issue as what you had before. It’s VM ware issue.

Unfortunately I can’t really help you here. This is where my expertise ends.

to me it looks like a VM issue and that’s what the missing vbios error seems to say.

maybe you could try some of the links I shared earlier if they have any suggestions.

alternatively you can roll back to the earlier version as it was working for you before

Before this, I ran your code successfully.
However, I've switched to unraid now, using GTV-G,
Assigned the nuclear display to 918-7.1-42951,
But now there is an error and I don't know how to fix it
./in_modules.sh: line 10: 21836 Killed insmod i915.ko

please go through the link here. It’s not specific to unraid, but it does seem to suggest that gtv-g might not work and you have to use gtv-d method.

the issue you are facing is not related to the driver, but how you set up the VM for hw transcoding. so you will have better information/advice at unraid forums.

I am happy to inform you that I have modified the PCI slot location in the XML configuration file of the unraid virtual machine (the core display location is modified to 0000:00:02.0). Due to insufficient core memory, I can only assign the core graphics card to 2 VMs. Because I have an MSI 1660S graphics card, the rest of the virtual machines use VGPU, which solves the problem perfectly.
However, the nuclear display decoding of the DSM version can only work under 7.1-42951, and it still does not work under 7.1-42962.
I pray that I can work stably in the later period, and I am no longer tossing them.

Hi, I download the 918+ files and upload all ko and bin to 918+ 7.1.1 42926up1, but it doesn't work.

It shows:

./in_modules.sh: line 10: 15888 Killed                  insmod i915.ko

And there is no output with ls /dev/dri.

I guess maybe this patch can only be used for 7.0.1? Please help.

Hi, some more details will help.
what system are you using CPU etc. is it virtualized or bare metal.

there is no kernel change from 7.0.1 to 7.1.1, so technically the same modules will work.

pls give output of dmesg and /var/log/messages

Thank you for the reply.

I'm using 10400 and gvt-g plugin in unraid, to share the 10400 GPU to a Q35 virtual DS918+.

The shared gpu works fine in another Win10 VM, but not working in DSM.

Here are the logs:

Please check the note from post  #144 above.

It’s something to do with unraid. The user was able to make it work on 7.1 42951 though

I have already used the pci address 0000:00:02.0.

It looks like something is wrong in 42962. Unfortunately, I just tried the arpl loader which cannot support 42951 now. I will try again if it is fixed. Thank you.

Edit:

I just tried 42661, the driver works. I guess there is something different in 42962.
