akaz Posted June 24, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 24, 2013 Hi i changed the mac and Serial by editing the file that resides on the USB... File is located under boot\grub\grub.conf this is what mine looks like #serial --unit=0 --speed=115200 #terminal serial default 1 timeout 4 hiddenmenu fallback 0 title SYNOLOGY_1 root (hd0,0) hw_model kernel /zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=5 netif_num=1 syno_hw_version=RS3612xs initrd /rd.gz title SYNOLOGY_2 root (hd0,1) # cksum /grub_cksum.syno # vender /vender # hw_model kernel /zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=5 netif_num=1 syno_hw_version=RS3612xs mac1=00113205V7U8 sn=B7J4N00000 initrd /rd.gz All you need to do is add the MAC and Serial number.. please note the mac address format.. 00-11-32-05-C8-7B will not work. to edit the file on windows i used notepad++ which is free to download. Peter995 Posted June 25, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 25, 2013 The easiest way to edit the MAC address & Serial No is to install Ext2Fsd on a Windows PC, then just insert the USB stick that has had the Synology DS3612xs - DSM 4.2 build 3202 img file written to it. It will then appear as just another drive.

mrchris76 Posted June 26, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 26, 2013 This didn't work for me, either changing it in the 'vender' file or changing the menu.lst / grub.conf. My HP N40L ignores whatever I put in for some reason.
totalnas Posted June 27, 2013 Share #6 Posted June 27, 2013 This didn't work for me, either changing it in the 'vender' file or changing the menu.lst / grub.conf. My HP N40L ignores whatever I put in for some reason. Hi, I use one HP N54L and it works! Please, revise that you COMMENT the three lines: chsum, vender and hw_model. And boot using SYNOLOGY_2 config, not fallback (SYNOLOGY_1). FYI, I use the release DSM 4.2 3211 x64

totalnas Posted July 8, 2013 Share #9 Posted July 8, 2013 Hi, boot a Linux LiveCD using some free virtualization hypervisor (VMware Player or VirtualBox) and connect the USB stick to the virtual machine. You can edit the grub.conf file without any problem! TN
