True.... but I wonder if you are only allowed to make volumes in bunches of 12 disks on the REAL hardware? or when you plug in the expansion.... does something pick that up and automatically change the /etc.default/synoinfo.conf file eg DS3612xs /etc.default/synoinfo.conf file read 12 disks DS3612xs plus 1 x expansion unit /etc.default/synoinfo.conf file read 24 disks DS3612xs plus 2 x expansion unit /etc.default/synoinfo.conf file read 36 disks .

  5. you should be able to do it back up your data 1st grab Trantors 4.3-3810 version (.img and the .pat files) http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1700 write that to a usb stick (or overwrite your original) if you have any MAC address changes / serial number changes you made.... make them to this new usb stick as well power down your NAS pop the usb stick in and reboot restart the NAS and either open web browser to the same web page you used too do. or Use Synology assistant once again to find your NAS it will give you two options Migrate or Reinstall (your Choice) once done it should reboot and you will be up and going with the newer version Tho all your users and any software you installed will need to be re-setup again (time settings etc) connect once again then use this guide to update to the latest 4.3-3810 v3 http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1082&start=330#p9060 .

  7. Change your SMB settings from SMB2 large MTU back to normal (eg turn that selection button off) Seems SMB2 uses a lot of CPU to do roughly the same speed throughput I find. try again. .

Yeah tried with less Tried 12 Tried 8 Hmmm Tried another box with the 1068e card again (one with a lot of drives) Looks like it uses a different driver MPTSAS not MPT2SAS It's got other issues...sas resets etc....but thats a driver bug I believe But I noticed that it said......"Maximum number of drives for md0 is 26" which is interesting Maybe have to attack SAS from a different direction.....and use RS10613xs+..... and not DS3612xs code base ?? RS10613xs+ can have 106 x HDD Could also be something simple like too much MEMORY ?? DS3612xs Specifications say 6Gb Maximum Memory...

  15. What happend when system do not reboot ? Where it's stuck ? Any error in console/dsm ? Can you give the output of : cat /proc/mdstat when system doesn't boot ? It's a bit hard to catch.... seems to just about make it through boot up... If this will be the only Xpenology, then it's fine and you can change these setting later if you like ** Set your computer boot order to boot from USB 1st Place in the USB stick in Computer boot ** Depending on how many drives you have connected, it will take a long time for it to complete the boot process. ** Open Synology Assistant and wait for the new system to appear (refresh it every 3 minutes or so) Once it boots you can click on connect and it will open a web browser window, and you can go through the installation process (Don't worry that it cannot find all your drives in this step.... as we will be erasing the volume after it reboots) On my system it only found 6 of the 15 installed drives at installation time.... Let it install DSM to how ever many drives it initially finds. boot process Log in to the system Open the “Storage Manager” and remove Volume 1 Select the “HDD Management” Tab And take note of how many drives are detected Leave this web browser window open, as it can automatically refresh (if it doesn't you can select the Volume Tab and HDD Management Tab again... or select refresh Button) Once back in If I look in "Storage Manager", under HDD Management I see 6 Disk only.... starting at Disk Number 7 I removed the Volume 1 Now comes the manual configuration side... and a bit of frustration as you need some hardware information Open a SSH session to your Xpenology (its better to open 2 or 3 sessions as you will be able to see more of whats going on) eg ssh root@10.0.0.22 now we want to see what the system detected at boot time so you can either do the following type in the command dmesg and a whole heap of stuff will scroll up the screen or output the dmesg to a file and download this file for easier reading (my preferred way) dmesg > /tmp/dmesg.txt download the file scp root@10.0.0.22:/tmp/dmesg.txt /home/yourusername/Desktop/ Sections we are interested in are any lines with “ata” eg ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xf800 ctl 0xf700 /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf edit the etc.defaults file scroll down and find the 3 lines esataportcfg=”0x1000” usbportcfg="0xffe000" internalportcfg=”0xfff” which I changed to what I calculated above “Storage Manager” HDD Management tab change.....if not within HDD Management press the refresh button Now it shows Which on my system was close, but in the HDD Management it showed my USB Stick as   18. You could try the latest 4.3-3810 v1.0 of Trantor It should work, as it has the Megaraid and the MPT2SAS drivers in it. .

  20. WooHoo Got it all working 15 x 1TB SATA Drives connected to 2 x 8 port SAS controllers (Dell H200 + Dell H310) setup as a SHR2 Volume Survives a reboot .

  22. Did you enable dynamic dns etc? or maybe webdav? prob something related to a free web type service provided by synology......and every hour it calls home to say yes I am still available. Double check what you have installed
  23. ARGH!!! I have got this sorted if I can just work out Binary found something interesting. You you change the sections of /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf internalportcfg= esataportcfg= usbportcfg= Whilst the system is up and going and the storagemanager (Both volume and HDD Management) will change "on the fly" so now my problem is What do I set internalportcfg= usbportcfg= both too? eg I have 9 USB ports and 22 Internal ports what hex code to I use for each? **update** OK I have tried the following esataportcfg="0x00000" usbportcfg="0xf300000" internalportcfg="0xcfffff" 0000 0111 1111 1100 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 = 0xf300000 = 9? 0000 0000 0000 0011 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 = 0xcfffff =22? And I can get all drives up... but it also brings up the boot USB key...and logs errors about smart temps seems like it wants the internal drives to come 1st...then the USB ports (in the binary count) as if I do it the other way around eg 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0001 1111 1111 = 0x1ff = 9? 0000 0111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1110 0000 0000 = 0x7ffffe00 =22? all drives dissapear .

Hmmm thats weird Doing the testing for you Trantor with the H200 card I made a mistake and used synoboot-trantor-4.2-3211-v1.2.img instead of synoboot-3810-pre-v1.1_v4.img Machine booted really quick found all 6 drives quickly, no want_idx errors at all Naturally I couldn't install the XPEnology_trantor_v1.0_DSM_DS3612xs_3810.pat file but I was amazed how fast it found the controller / drives anyways, on with the testing

Funny thing is With the older SAS card 1068E chipset it works fine eg when I try S5000PSL Motherboard (which has 6 onboard SATA) 4gb ram HP SC44Ge card, hooked to a 6bay SAS expander backplane containing 6 x 450Gb 15K SAS Drives......with no drives attached to SATA controller at all Can install, configure and it survives a reboot fine System is quite happy, just a bit slow to boot with the want_idx errors SMART works Can't configure the write caching......but watching the logs it's enabled anyway So with me, it's only the later cards giving me trouble .
