That's a KP very early in the boot. Have you run DS918+ or DS920+ on this host?  If not, what CPU is in the host?

EDIT: found it a few posts back.  Your E3-1270v2 is too old to run DV3221, DS918+ or DS920+

wow! I would have sworn I build a DS918 on this board before, obviously I was wrong! Must have been the i7 4790 box I have? oh well...So it must be 4th gen or newer right? (to be compatible with 918/920/3221)

Man, I just bought all that server hardware to build that proxmox server :( <- disappointed.

It does - I had no unusual issues installing with ESXi.  Console does cut off as you state.  If you are using KVM/q35 and a single virtual disk, configure the virtual disk to SATA, and try SataPortMap=11 and DiskIdxMap=1000.  Also, the disk needs to be AT LEAST 21GB for the post-installation to complete and still create a shared folder.

Still failed. I removed the scsi emu hdd, added 2 sata emu hdd as sata 1 and 2, q35 system, kvm64 host type, tried 42218 since I am able to see serial console, these are the results.

    Spoiler

It does - I had no unusual issues installing with ESXi.  Console does cut off as you state.  If you are using KVM/q35 and a single virtual disk, configure the virtual disk to SATA, and try SataPortMap=11 and DiskIdxMap=1000.  Also, the disk needs to be AT LEAST 21GB for the post-installation to complete and still create a shared folder.

I tried so many things yesterday... q35, i440fx, changing cpu type from default kvm64 all the way to host (e3-1270v2), 2 cores, 4 cores, 2gb ram, 8gb ram, nothing worked. emu hdd was set to scsi and 50gb, I will try later on with virtual sata and those port mappings and report back later.

@pocopico I was able to duplicate this error, something is wrong when adding v9fs for apollolake 42218 and 42661, gives a recipe error.

@luutuananh until @pocopico fixes the issue with the v9fs drivers, use the virtio drivers and you will have success.. I just tested them myself and both 42218 and 42661 build successfully.

    To build DS918+ DSM 7.0.1-42218

    ./rploader.sh clean now
    ./rploader.sh update now
    ./rploader.sh fullupgrade now
    ./rploader.sh serialgen DS918+

    ./rploader.sh build apollolake-7.0.1-42218

    To build DS918+ DSM 7.1.0-42661u1

    ./rploader.sh clean now
    ./rploader.sh update now
    ./rploader.sh fullupgrade now
    ./rploader.sh serialgen DS918+

You are getting a KP. did you try with 42661 ?

Yes, with 42661 the console no longer displays booting process as shown here

    Loading Linux...
    Loading initramfs...
    Starting kernel with USB boot

So I have no way to know how far the booting process got before it died...but again, because of how instantly proxmox is quitting that vm instances, I know its locked in kernel panic. ??????

Anything else I can try?  Seems to work with ESXi ???

Thanks for all your testing and results @flyride. From previous experience with proxmox, I'm going to stick with the q35 option and just deal with the drive numbering offset.

q35 should be picked when passing through PCIe devices, but each to their own of course :)

From the research, the only difference is a slight performance hit of about 25%. I am not saying thats not important, but could you elaborate as to why stick with q35?

    try 42218

It downloaded the 42118 pat, but this is as far as the booting goes, having the serial console opened while booted in tiny core, then clicking reset to boot the loader...

This is a loader with only these commands

    ./rploader.sh ext denverton-7.0.1-42218 add https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pocopico/rp-ext/master/v9fs/rpext-index.json
    ./rploader.sh build denverton-7.0.1-42218

Resulting in this from the console... obviously its hung here.

    Any suggestions?

  9. I have tried all nic adapters available in proxmox. virtio, e1000, r8139, vmware ... no connection.

I have added ext for each except the r8139 as I did not find a link to it on @pocopicogit hub, but the builder auto added it https://github.com/pocopico/rp-ext/tree/main/8139cp

Still no connection, and based on how quickly proxmox shutsdown the vm, I am assuming it crashed (kernel panic?) somewhere because it closes the vm almost instantly, where other vms take several seconds to close.

I tried to build 7.0.1 42218 and got this error

  10. After several failed attempts, I am at loss for words. This has been the first platform to give me pains while trying to build.

I am using proxmox, like the tutorial in my signature... I have build the loader but can not connect to it, so I assumed it was a nic driver.  I have tried v9fs

    ./rploader.sh ext denverton-7.1.0-42661 add https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pocopico/rp-ext/master/v9fs/rpext-index.json

    But no connection.

    I then tried virtio

    ./rploader.sh ext denverton-7.1.0-42661 add https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pocopico/redpill-load/master/redpill-virtio/rpext-index.json

    and got this error

This was only to be proof of concept kind of thing, since I dont have the graphics card or cameras for that matter to utilize this, but for some reason this build doesnt like me.

And since @pocopico told me the serial output doesnt work, I have no clue how far the vm is actually getting during boot.

  11. Just to complete the test, I edited the first (main) VM from q35 to i440fx, and tried to spin it up - it gave me an error, due to the pci pass thru.  So I removed the pci card from its hardware profile, and added it again (no pcie checkbox) and it powered right up with disks on the HBA starting at slot #1... So good to go!

I did not re-build its loader, so NO change to its user_config.json which read like this:

        "SataPortMap": "1",
        "DiskIdxMap": "00"

  12. I tried to built a DVA3221 vm, and it wouldn't boot up, I am guessing it suffered a kernel panic somewhere, but without serial console to monitor I could not see or tell. I tried a few times without success, adding only the v9fs drivers for the virtio nic.  Not sure why it doesnt like proxmox?  I had no problems with 918/3622

There are a lot of posts on the topic.  I found this post that seems to answer my question.  I'll amend my first post to indicate that passthrough system performance is a differentiator.

    https://altechnative.net/virtualized-windows-10-i440fx-vs-q35/#:~:text=For a long time%2C Q35,be PCI rather than PCIe.

According to that link, q35 seems to use less cpu power vs i440fx, not sure how to test that especially for a dsm install? I can tell you that when building the loader under the i440fx system, when running the ./rploader.sh satamap now command, it detected only the hba (albeit with no drives) and wanted to default to 0 connected drives, I choose 8 and enter. the resulting user_config.json entry looked like this

        "SataPortMap": "8",
        "DiskIdxMap": "00"

And on powerup, dsm just loaded right up... of course it still had my previous installation still intact.

Are there any tests I can run to compare performance? or any tests you would like any results from?

Are you passing through the entire HBA or are you mapping the HBA drives into the VirtIO controller?  I was under the impression that a PCIe device passthrough wasn't functional since there is no PCIe bus in i440fx.

I powered down my other dsm vm, created a new vm as i440fx, pci pass thru the entire card to the i440fx vm (and you are correct, the pci checkbox is greyed out) so I rebuild the loader using the user_config.json from the first vm, powered it up and boom! Disk in slot 1.

So I am actually passing the entire card. I am not sure how to check if anything is or is not working?

    image.thumb.png.e167b261224caf37f3b10857f69267a5.png

  15. Since I am unable to edit the first post, I will add this here.

With many thanks to user @flyride who graciously looked into an issue I was having, using an LSI HBA card in pci pass thru mode for my HDDs, but aways populating the DSM system in lower slots (for me it was slot #9 or slot #2 depending on the sataportmap), he discovered that by choosing system i440fx instead of Q35 fixed this issue.

    His thread is located here:

As I mention in that post, I am not sure what advantages or disadvantages choosing i440fx vs Q35 have? But if you experience slot population issues, use i440fx as the system type and not Q35. The rest of the procedure remains the same.

Exactly, I have an old device with DSM 6.2.3 that is very stable and functional enough to use.
Recently I'm trying to install 6.2.4 using tinycore-redpill instead of Jun's Loader and I always have problems.
Could you please explain the difference between the SataportMap parameters of Jun Loader and RedPill? Maybe I have set this wrong. I am installing DSM in ESXi and put loader image at SATA 0:0 and pass-through physics SATA controller. So I set before are "SataPortMap": "19", "DiskIdxMap": "1000" to be able to hide the boot disk. But not work with RedPill.
While I was still debugging continuously, I found that the recent update of tinycore-redpill removed the support of 6.2.4. So is there an easy way to get the 6.2.4 loader now, other than manually compiling it myself?

    Thanks.

While I understand your concern and appreciate you want to stick with dsm6.x.x, I do not know what advantage you will get going from what has been described as a rock solid 6.2.3 to 6.2.4.... thats the issue here. To me, and probably to others, why bother? If you are going to go thru the hassle of building a new loader and deal with whatever learning curve will be involved for you, what makes 6.2.4 so special over 6.2.3.... I mean at that point, learn to use redpill, @Peter Suh has a great thread and guide, and jump on the newest DSM and its benefits.  If you are stuck on 6.2.3 because of package you like, or usb devices which were removed in DSM7 - again, we all get that... but using Jun loader and dsm6.2.3 is relatively easy and you seem to have it working... I personally don't see why even bother with a minimal jump (more like a slight side step) to 6.2.4.

My advice is if you are going to learn to use redpill, like we all are, jump to dsm7.1 and enjoy. Once you get the hang of it, it's not difficult. And this community is very active so help is usually no more than a day a way, but most scenarios have been covered and can be resolved fairly easily.

Not trying to be rude, just seems like an unusual request at this stage of the game.

I think that q35 should be fine. Right after GRUB you get some kernel messages. Its only after some time that it switches to something else (GPU ?)

I just tried switch q35 to i440fx (the only other system to choose) on i440fx I almost immediately get a red bar showing time out error.

    What else can I try?

Actually i was talking more about the machine emulation.

    image.png.2f8a759dbef011a0f9401ec6d06c5f8a.png

The problem with the DVA is that you cannot have a serial console. After kernel boots its moving all messages away from tty and this makes it harder to troubleshoot.

I can try again with the i440x, I think thats the other cpu type
