  1. The CPU shown is a cosmetic bug, don't worry about it. As for the wireless adaptor it's very unlikely that the drivers have been included in the boot image. If you really want to use it you can search the forum for advice on adding them & recompiling the kernel, this does however require a degree of Linux knowledge.

  2. Use of the search is always a good place to start as there are lots of guides on here!

    However:

I'd either go for 4.3 update 5 or 5.0-4493 Update 3. Whichever you decide on you'll have to apply the minor update manually, see guides for how to accomplish this.

Yes your disks will get reformatted by DSM, so you'll need to restore you data from your backups, after recreating any shares you need.

The USB drive in only used for booting from & is needed for every boot. The OS (DSM) is installed on all disks, I wouldn't bother installing the SSD personally.

  3. I was trying to follow this thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2999&hilit=3827

I ssh'ed into the box, and found a .pat update: DSM_DS3612xs_3827.pat. So I guess I can't update this way because I got a .pat file instead of the smallupdate*.* file? This must be a basic question, but I can't seem to find a thread telling me what steps I need to do to perform the update. Can someone point me in the correct direction? Any help or advice is appreciated. PS No Synolocker on the server yet.

No, you can't update this way as it's a major update rather than a minor update. You'll need an updated boot image from, trantor or gnoboot.

  4. When you reinstalled DSM was there an option to create an SHR volume & if so did you leave it selected?

As for the synology tutorial, did you install lvm2 before running the 'mdadm –Asf && vgchange -ay' command?

If the answer to the above 2 questions is yes, then I think your data is lost, hopefully you have a backup though!

  5. The iOS App Store reviews. I'll test it out. I assume it works over the Internet too?

It's a free app you have nothing to loose by trying it, if you don't like it use something else like plex. Yes it will work over the internet assuming you have made the necessary changes in DSM & opened the relevant firewall ports. You will probably want to use a DNS service too unless you have a static IP.

  6. In a word, No. QuickConnect will only work with a genuine synology device. You don't need it to setup remote access anyway. Sign up for a free DNS account, configure the appropriate settings in xpenology & away you go.

  7. First off I just want to preface this with saying I am very appreciative of the efforts on the XPE project but now with another boot option coming to fruition, nanoboot from a Chinese site, I wanted to ask about security.

Has anyone been curious if there are security issues with any of these options? They all require their own pat files and I imagine with that there can be backdoor vulnerabilities created.

How do we know people aren't baking trojans into this software?

Actually gnoboot uses Synologys's pat file, not sure about nanobbot as I haven't tried it. As for Trantor, yes it does require his modified pat file, but I've been using his versions for quite some time now & thus far have no reason to doubt him.

  8. That's really up to you Dan, what are your reasons for updating? Functionality, features or just because a new version is available.

My main system is an N40 running 4.2 very happily without issues & I have no plans to update it yet. I also have a N54 running 5.0 4458 which is also running without issues.

I prefer the look of 4.2 but some of the features of 5 I.e. it is much easier to configure external access on 5 & some of the inbuilt tools are better.

My point is that there really is no need to update & if you look at the Synology forums a lot of users there haven't updated to 5 yet.

  9. It should be a good beginning to see what's happening when DSM create the dsm.dat and what are error messages.

But how to start? somebody can send logs from an impacted DSM for analysis?

I think the easiest way to do is like we did with 4.3, I repack a minimal 5.0-4482 build with only sata/network drivers so everyone can test/debug.

Hi Trantor, happy to test on an HP N54L.

  10. FUCK SYnology!. damnit I dont have a screen to see what goes on with my gnoboot.. i just boot it from usb and thats it.. i dont have the luxury of a vga monitor.. So i cant see anything going on and if its going to unmount my shit then fuck this update. right when i thought everything was ok.. its not.. bastard updates and risks.

Synology doesn't owe you anything & no one is forcing you to update. Just be glad that the previous version is working thanks to Gnoboot & Trantor.

If you want a hassle free experience buy a real Synology!

  11. Hi all,

My DDNS can't be used with XPEnology, so I tried to register for Synology DDNS.

Before editing the serial and MAC address I got an error message that I can't register more then 5 accounts per day, while I was trying to register for Synology DDNS. Now, with my new S/N and MAC XPEnology is running fine, but get an error because my password is not right for Synology and can't register... Is there a solution for this? Thank you in advance!

Rather than use Synology's DDNS service try DNS Dynamic https://www.dnsdynamic.org, I've been using it now for a couple of months without any issues.

You will need to edit /etc.defaults/ddns_provider.conf & add the following at the end of the file in order to make it work though.

    [dnsdynamic.org]

    modulepath=DynDNS

    queryurl=www.dnsdynamic.org/api/?hostname=__HOSTNAME__&myip=__MYIP__

  12. Since you've moved the network it was on when you set it up have you checked that the static IP isn't conflicting with any thing else on your network, also check that the IP range supplied by your router is the same as it was on your parents network i.e. 192.168.0.xx or 192.168.1.xx

  13. Hello Jokies,

Thanks for the advice. I did the upgrade without really big issues. I am only running into one problem at the moment:

As I discovered that mysql isn't used anymore but is replaced with mariadb I installed the mariadb package. When I want to start it it gives me the following error:

failed to start mariadb with custom my.cnf

It would be much appreciated if someone has a solution for me. I have googled for the issue but I didn’t found a answer that solves the problem

For other users how are thinking about upgrading here is the little things I ran into:

When doing the upgrade I chose the first option to preserve all my data and most of the settings. When the upgrade was done and I was logged in I had the scare of my life. All my shared folders were gone. Thank god I made a backup. When I logged in with WINSCP I saw that all my folders were still there. What the problem was is that you have to reassign the right’s for admin for all your folders in DSM. After doing this everything was ok.

    Cheers

    Burner1977

SSH into your server & try the following:

    vi /volume1/@appstore/MariaDB/etc/mysql/my.cnf

    comment OUT the "bind-address = 0.0.0.0"

    Save & restart MariaDB
