Hey guys,
Sorry to ask this please dont shoot me down.
I dont want to read through 300 pages.
I am currently still on DSM 5.2-5967 Update 1
Using the official DSM installer.
Is there a way I can upgrade to the latest 6.1 using this loader?
If so is there a way I can upgrade without losing all my data?
I am using a dedicated system for this.
Also I am running a few packages from http://packages.synocommunity.com/
Namely, Sonarr, CP, NZBGet, do you know if these are compatible with 6.1?
Thanks and sorry if this has been asked a million times.
Unless you really need DSM 6xx stay with 5.2 as a lot of packages haven't been updated to run on 6 yet.

He's running NG Firewall in Synology's new Virtual DSM Manager https://www.untangle.com/

How is 36 degrees in idle-.. I made some big changes here
Yes, that's much better.

Great write up Polanskiman

I'm actually running them in a Synology DS1513+ at present, my xpenology server is a HP gen7 microserver with 6 2TB WD Blacks which run a little hotter at 35-37 degrees. The 1513+ is my backup server & the HP is my main server. I've not really noticed the temps vary that much, although the fan can get quite loud on the HP when transcoding

I have 5 3TB WD Reds running 24/7 at 27-29 degrees. As far as hibernation goes anything can wake the disks not just plex. If you look at the synology forums it affects genuine boxes too.
-
The temps your disks are running at isn't good, personally I think you would be better off trying to improve the air flow in you case or perhaps investing a better one rather than trying to get hibernation working.

Why not setup a free DNS service, something like NO-IP https://www.noip.com/
Create a NO-IP account then on your server go to Control Panel/External Access & setup the NO-IP DNS you created.
-
Yes I did, but as I said I had previously backed up my data.
-
Yes you need a real Synology to use extra licenses, I bought a 2nd hand DS213 & use that purely for surveillance station, works very well.
-
I have 2 servers running without issue, as brantje said ensure your servers have different mac/serials

I did exactly the same thing a few months ago. I updated to DSM 5.0-4493 then went to 5.2-5592. I didn't loose any data or settings but I did have a backup of both just in case.
You can find the relevant boot images here: http://xpenology.me/downloads/

it worked for me, but, why is this option dissabled?
is it deprecated?
Synology are moving away from SHR on their higher end units, although you can still enable it as mentioned above. SHR still remains the default for most of their models though.
-
No you shouldn't update from the GUI, I would suggest searching the forums & doing a little reading before doing anything else.

is there yet a way to get DSM 6.0 running on HP N54L ?
I would suggest searching, or even just looking at the forum properly as the first 2 thread's detail the 2 new boot loaders & the 5th thread down is a tutorial.

But if i migrate my current SHR raid to this dsm version, when i edit the synoconf it's after installation so would it wipe my data or will it boot nonetheless but just won't show it as SHR in the storage manager ?
And so i install dsm 6.0, i edit synoconf, reboot and voila all is good ?
As you'll be migrating the SHR volume will show up & work ok, you just won't be able to create new SHR volumes unless you make the change in synoconf

Hello,
I have the same question as boOmLa.
Also my Synology is running on a 32bit computer, will this also run on a 32bit computer?
Thanks,
Regards,
Michel
I think you will find that DSM 6 is 64bit only.

Hi Community,
I created a simple video to show the beginner how to prepare the Synoboot.img bootable device and also how to find your pendrive VID and PID.
Below is the youtube link.
Hope this will help the beginner on the preparation.
Thank you.

Thank you so much mate :- that was a big help for a noob like me.
Can I use the same method to upgrade (not a fresh install) from DSM 5.2-5644 on a barmetal mini computer (lenovo M700) to DSM 6.0.2 without data loss on the SSD ?
Thanx in advnced
Common guys cant wait for one to confirm the above - holding back couse of my lack of experience- Hope some one who knows if I preb. the USB with the latest boot image ver. 1.0.1 and install the DSM 6.0.2 over DSM 5.2-5644 will it merge my existing data on the HD and I can continue where I left off when it was on DSM 5.2 ?
PC= lenovo M700 tiny.
Thanx
Have you actually tried searching the forums, if you had you would have found your answer: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22100

My suggestion would be to have 2 separate VM's, one for your local users & another for your internet users, that way you can maximise the number of CPU's each instance can see & get the best transcoding performance for all users.
-
Yes, you're right. I just want to know why I have to change PID, VID, SN, and MAC if I use DSM 6.
Anybody?
Thanks.
I believe the answer is that Synology have added some extra code that now checks the SN MAC pairs match in DSM 6.

Thanks for the cliffs - interesting.
Did they mention anything about there drive towards subscription licensing? That seems to be the direction they are heading in. They also seem to want a bigger slice of the corporate market. Unfortunately that seems to be having a negative impact on their domestic and soho user base as the licensing model is trickling down.
Anything that gives people an exit strategy from M$ is a good thing especially since they are pushing for a cloud based style OS and app platform, which will inevitably turn into a subscription model.
No nothing about subscription licensing except for the cloud service which you would expect anyway. The event was much more corporate focused than previous Synology events I've been to & you're right they are after a bigger slice of the corporate pie & from what I've seen of their new hardware they may well get it.

What does it means Active Domain Integration? it means can act like real domain controller? next step it's integrate openchange, a open source clone of exchange
It means they're offering the same functionality as Microsoft for business users. Oh & I forgot to add that they've beefed up MailPlus too.

Universal Search, lots of focus on making backups easier & faster, a new Synology Cloud service, Active Domain integration, new version of Surveillance station, a new Synology chat messaging service, several new high end products & a new router.
