About the problem that Synology cannot update automatically

c_zs

Question

I booted with tinycore-redpill in esxi, installed dsm7.1, and found the following problems:

1. Enter Synology [Control Panel] -> [Update and Restore], the status always shows: Connection failed, please check the Internet connection

2. Enter Synology [Control Panel] -> [Notification Settings], open the email, and click "Send Test Email" after setting, but the test email cannot be received. (set up exactly right, and get email notifications in case of system errors)

thank you for your reply,
1. I understand very well that this is to prevent automatic updates without knowing it. What should I do if I want to restore it?
2. The email settings are correct, because I can normally receive email notifications when there are other errors in the system. The only problem is that on the [Notification Settings] page, when I click "Send Test Email", I cannot receive emails. Test mail, although the page prompts that it has been sent successfully

Use the manual:

I am unsure what page that is since it's all in Chinese. My notification config page doesn't look like that. Also next time please remove any identifiable information such as IP, email address etc. This is for your safety.

I just did a 'Send a Test Email' and it worked for me. You might want to look at your local network or the machine that is sending the email. I see you are using a local IP.

通知问题呢。你能解决吗?

I am a user from China, and I used google translation, which may be the reason for the inaccuracy of the translation. What I want to express is:

1. The email settings are correct, because when there are other errors in the system, I can receive email notifications normally.
2. The problem now is that on the [Notification Settings] page, when I click "Send Test Email" (that is, the button in the red box in the figure below), the page prompts that the email has been sent successfully, but the test email cannot be received. I guess it's because of blocking automatic updates or other problems.

No that's unrelated considering your are receiving notifications normally. The only problem is when you try to send a test email that it doesn't work. This is odd. Not sure what is going on. I'll think about it. I don't have this issue personally.

Anyone else experiencing this? @flyride any clues?

My understanding is that the Redpill stack internally blocks some of the Synology IP's and services involved in telemetry (thus automatic updates):

Those have nothing to do with third party SMTP services.  As @Polanskiman I have no issue with email delivery from Synology, so I would point to firewall, regional filtering, or other external influence as the cause to the problem.  It might be worth Wiresharking the box and filtering for SMTP to see what is going in and out.
