mankymanning Posted April 2, 2015 #1 Posted April 2, 2015 Is it possible to take 2 disks in a JBOD array from a Synology 212+ and install them into a server running XPEnology? I was hoping to do this with XPEnology running under ESXi and RDM passthrough of the disks to the VM.
samy Posted April 3, 2015 #2 Posted April 3, 2015 Don't know if it could work , but it will be a very interesting feedback if you test it
Balrog Posted April 4, 2015 #3 Posted April 4, 2015 I think it works as the partitioning of the harddisks are not changed. For a test I pulled all harddisks out of my production machine (bare metal) into the test machine (virtual under esxi) and all data were still intact.
mankymanning Posted April 4, 2015 Author #4 Posted April 4, 2015 Yes I can confirm that's the case. I got it all set up, booted with XPEnoboot and went through the web based installer. It said it recognised the disks were pulled from a 212_ and would I like to migrate. Clicked yes and everything was as it was. As it happens I need to move fro mJBOD -> SHR so need to wipe anyway but very impressed! DSM certainly runs fast now!
GrayDeath Posted April 5, 2015 #5 Posted April 5, 2015 It Works ... i have migrate disks from a 1815+ to a AsRock 1900-ITX with 4port Controller Card.
samy Posted April 5, 2015 #6 Posted April 5, 2015 Super ! Can you give details about what to do EXACTLY in Esxi ? Thanks all of you !
jitesh_88 Posted April 22, 2015 #7 Posted April 22, 2015 i would also be interested in a step by step guide to move hard drives from real synology to XPEnology running as a VM on ESXi host. when running through the web based installer does it install on a separate hard drive or will it put it on the drive that has been pulled from the real synology??
GrayDeath Posted April 22, 2015 #8 Posted April 22, 2015 just do it it appeas an MIGRATE option not an INSTALL option. is the same way like an nomal install ...
