As far i know thats a known issue on 5592 and its fixed in 5644. You can try to upgrade, if it doesn't work then you can downgrade.

I'm running 2 *12 bay units and one 16 bay unit (edited synoinfo.conf) all bare metal, .4 XPE
The biggest problem I had was with the 16 bay unit, which suffered from drive disconnects and crashed volumes. I tracked it to the 500w PSU, which was not powerful enough to run all the drives hardware, (even though the current ratings said it should). I got a 550w PSU and its stable now.
What brand did you use?

Just insert the new ram and enjoy.
Same as for the CPU.
Yes, will write a tutorial when I get back home.

If you use NAT network you have to forward port 5000 to your virtualbox.
If you used bridged adapter, then you can find xpenology by Syno Assistant.

You can request drivers here: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1361

I have seen build with 20 HDD's so i doubt that 12 bay's will is a problem (bare metal).
Running bare metal here, so i can only guess what went wrong.
Did you try with another hypervisor? Will try later this week a vbox with 12 disks and report back.

Yea, the drive numbering isn't kinda logic with xpenology.
My setup is detected as following
Disk 1 -

I strongly advice you to keep SHR raid, and not switch to raid 0 (striping).
If you use striping, and one disk dies, you will lose all your data.
Best thing is, delete volume, create a new one as shr 1.
My setup is the following:
Volume 1 ~ 600Gb for Packages and logs
Volume 2 5Tb For storage,
Volume 1 and volume 2 together create disk group 1 (still following it ?).

The 9 slots available is how many disks you can insert, default is 12.
SHR 1 is provding 1 disk fault tolerance, that means if 1 disk fails, you will still have your data.
You can calculate the availble storage here: https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator
Keep in mind that eg, 2TB is not 2tb but 1.8tb orso.

As long you don't have any important data on it you can remove it.
Did you created the volume as a SHR volume?

If you go to Storage Manager, volumes, can you click the 'Manage' button?
Also, can you pleqase make a screenshot of the Volume and Disk Group tab?

Keep in mind setting a controller to IDE mode comes with a preformance penalty.
One last question: I've found many questions during setup about Synology services, like Quickconnect. Is it possible/safe/recommended to enable and use them in XPEnology?
This is possible, explained over the forum a couple of times. Basiclly its easy as:
- Generate mac an serial
- Put the mac and serial in syslinux.cfg
If you want, i can write a small how to =).

@brantje :
I already build a computer with i5-4460 (and tested DSM with virtual box!), it's really fast but I'm prefer sure it's really too expensive for my use :S
I'm okay to overbuild, but it seems too much. I know how to build these computers, I'm here because I would want to learn more about less expensive builds.
You can replace the I5 with an i3, replace the 16GB with 4GB or 8GB.
@butter_fry :
- I'm interested in the 3rd NIC. Is it enough to avoid plugging a screen etc. to the NAS when there's an issue or for the install? Or is it for lighter tasks?
You can access the nas via SSH, incase of network problems / NIC not reconized, then you should plugin a screen and keyboard to find out what is wrong.

I currently have:
Core i5-4460
16GB Mem
ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac
Silverstone DS380
2x 1TB
2x 2TB
It can held up 8 drives hot-swap space for 2 ssd's.
Feels very responsive, running same apps that you want some docker containers.
