  1. @apriliars3 I have a problem trying to fit the power supply fan. I hope you may be able to help. There are three wires (black, red and yellow) on the Noctua fan. The original has only two (black and red). I had to cut the original connector, because the Noctua obviously won't fit. Did you do something with the yellow cable? Additionally, I find the fan is not able to start on it's own. It needs a push to get going. Once going it goes ok though.
  2. Thanks for the confirmation. Will give it a go! Then to test my silent wings 4..,
  3. OK thanks. I bought the 20mm model, but that's fine. It is the 12v model. Did you use the standard, low or super low speed connector? And any issues with power supply overheating?
  4. Thanks again @apriliars3 With the psu fan, did you use a 12v or 5v model please? I read someone was unable to use the existing fan header because he thought it might only be 5v. It appears the 12v 20mm model should fit as a direct replacement to the original. I'm going to give it a try. My research shows the original is 8200rpm, with a static pressure of 9mm H2O and 9.4CFM (0.263m3 / min). At a volume of 30.5 dB(A) The Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12V has three settings 3700/4400/5000rpm, but only has a static pressure of 2.26mm H2O and 5.5 CFM at 5000rpm. Though at only 14.9 dB(A). This seems a considerable drop in performance, though a corresponding drop in audible volume.
  5. I'd like to know more if you are able please.
  6. Thanks for posting, but I have seen that video. Was just hoping for a few more real world experiences to gauge effectiveness with other fans. Given the popularity of the server, I'm surprised so few seem to have addressed. Though to be fair, the fan is not particularly loud. But with an all SSD system, it's the loudest part now.
  7. It’s great! I’m getting the full 2.5gb. Though I have all ssd’s in it. I’ve got another that I just bought one for too. Didn’t need any drivers, just worked. I have a Qnap five port switch and 10gig network in my Mac mini. Was a leap of faith, but I’m happy and hope it helps someone else. I tried with a usb network adapter, but it was flakey.
  8. This one works on an HP Microserver Gen8 at least. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BG2CZTYC/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=A1M3GLTR4UTMMM&th=1 The Nic-RTL8125B with the red heatsink (as there are multiple there. Only really useful if you have moved to SSD's.
  9. I have successfully used arpl-i18n-23.7.5 to install 7.2 on two machines and had to reinstall on one to try and get a network card recognised. However, when I try again (on both Microserver Gen7 and Gen8) and go to find.synology I end up with no drives detected... Are there simple steps to address this? I'm sure it must be a minor change to make. Thank you! EDIT: Fixed. There was a bios setting for sata/asci that I missed.
  10. Thanks to all involved. I waded through most of this and tried so many different things. Eventually this saved the day. I do have a 'special' charater in my password and it worked just fine. I would ask if the above post could be moved to the second position in the thread as a working solution as it has become buried.
  11. I have recently moved over to SSD only and the fan has become annoying. It's only running at 17%, but is audible. There has been a lot written about this, but no definitive answer. I am happy to replace it with something like a be quiet! Silent Wings 4 120mm PWM fan. But it seems there are issues to overcome such as the proprietary connector, five wire wiring and finally the system overriding it. Anyone have a solution? There is also a power supply fan, but not sure if that is actually audible and worth replacing too. Again, seems like it's a 5v one, so more complicated!
  12. Wow! Thank you so much for this Peter. This worked first time. I have spent the last three days trying all the other ones I could find. Must have attempted it over 50 times. There was absolutely nothing different that I could tell. I'm on update 3 actually. Now wondering if I should push my luck and try and my real server (gen8 microserver).
  13. I tried the APRL loader and no luck. Went back to yours Peter and once again, only get this far... IMG_1961 (2).HEIC
  14. Thank you so much for trying to help me Peter, but a lot of this goes over my head. Let me try.... Originally, I tried to use this tinycore-redpill.v0.9.4.3-2.m-shell.img.gz, but had the problem I posted about above. I was able to get it functioning after several attempts (not sure what I was doing differently), with arc-23.7.33.img.zip Then I was able to go ahead and load the Synology pat file and it worked. I also have a gen 8 microserver and that seemed to work with your loader (the first one I mentioned). So I would like to use yours on the gen 7, so I only have the one loader to work with. I think I'm using the M-Shell (the one with the four windows?). I only interact with the top left one. I go through and build the loader and then when it reboots, it gets as far as 'booting the kernal.' and then a flashing curser. I've tried numerous times, but it never gets any further than that. It seems it's not completing, so I can't get to load the DSM onto it. Is that any clearer?
