    I have an old HP Proliant Microserver N40L

    The most recent version that will run on this box is 6.2.3 with jun's loader DS3615xs v1.03b. You will need to go into the BIOS and disable C1E.

    Apart from that it is a fairy straightforward install.

    The other thing is that if you absolutely know without going into the BIOS that the N40 has c1e disabled, then you could try boot that from the new stick after pulling the drives.

    But I would strongly advise not messing with the old box in case you find you are trying to diagnose why two boxes won't boot.

    Maybe.

    Did you disable c1e in the bios?

    Shut the n40 down. Does the n54l boot from that stick?

    The only release that you could consider is 6.2.3 with DS3615xs 1.03b loader. It's not the latest DSM release. The guys are still working on something for 6.2.4 which currently is the latest of the V6 series.

    Frankly I only upgraded from 6.1.7 to 6.2.3 due to lockdown boredom. I haven't noticed any amazing improvement. I would be tempted to hang on to a perfectly good system and see what happens with the new loader before making any decision.

     

    A number of people run N54Ls here and maybe we can start a competition for the largest drive. I have 8Tbs in mine but I'm sure that someone will go larger.

    The first quote IS out of date. It refers to 6.2.2 not 6.2.3. (After 6.1.7, Synology made changes which meant the onboard nic no longer worked, so we were all playing around with extra drivers or buying a supported nic but then they put it all back to the way it was in 6.2.3 so it worked again).

     

    Either release is good. I was happy on 6.1.7 for a long time and then got bored one day and did the upgrade. I am happy with 6.2.3.

     

    You haven't said how you plan to get there from where you are. I would build a new system and migrate the data if at all possible. I can't say whether an inplace upgrade from 5.0 all the way to 6.1.7 or 6.2.3 would work, but the following is relevant to all systems that had DSM5 previously installed.

    As a start, I would reboot the box and press DEL / F1 or whatever the box needs to enter the BIOS/UEFI screen.

    I would check that the options set are "reasonable", including the system time and then proceed to the boot options and make sure that it is set to boot from the USB device that your loader is on.

    If you then don't get the loader messages on your screen, I would post my hardware details, which version of the bootloader is in use and the version of DSM that you have installed.

    I am going to send you here:

    Out of the loaders you have tried, the 1.03b DS3615xs and the v1.02b DS3615xs loaders are compatible - if you disable C1E. As you haven't the box doesn't appear on the network,

     

    The v1.01 loader might, might not require it. (It's been a long time. I can't remember). You could follow the link in the above to try to install 6.0.3 which is the version it would allow. You could try to create a loader, see if it boots and the box appears on the network.

     

    If not you will have to pull the box out and attach KBD and monitor.

    I'm not going to comment on whether the hardware is supported at this point - but you could look through the compatibility thread for it.

    What I will say that if v1.03b boots and lets you access the installation, then you must use DSM 6.2.3-25426 with it.

    1) Disable C1E in the BIOS

    2) Either download 6.1.7 15284 to your PC and use that as a manual install with the 1.02b loader you have prepared

       OR

       Download and use loader 1.03b DS3615xs and download and use 6.2.3-25426

     

    It doesn't really matter which one you choose.

     

    If that fails, you may need to wipe the hard disks due to the incomplete installation. ( I am assuming it was a new install)

     

    Make sure you go to Control Panel>Update & restore and turn off automatic updating when you have successfully installed

    If it is installed and running properly, it will allow you to press the power button and it will make DSM shut down gracefully.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

    We can see on this forum that people are looking in to it. Others may be looking at it and not being public about what they are doing.

    In the past the "developers" have waited until the new release becomes rolled out widely before disclosing their work.

    So we can't say that there will never be a new loader that takes Xpenology forward but equally we can't say that there will be one.

    We certainly can't say when.

    I have independently decided to stay on 6.2.3 on my genuine Synology boxes for the time being as 7 is a major upgrade and 6.2.4 seems to have some of 7 backported. It all works at the moment and if ain't broke ......

    Start a new thread in the newbie section. Post details of the version of the loader you are using and the version of DSM you are trying to get to work.

    What method did you follow to create the loader (e.g. tutorial here, YouTube video) and what changes did you make to the config.

    Also supply details of the motherboard and if you can, the details of the chipset the network card is using.

    Use your favourite internet search engine for Synology Download Centre...

    Follow the instructions and find your NAS of choice. At the moment you end up here for DS3615xs:

    Now click on the link that says all downloads.

    Pick the version you are looking for......

    and then you are back at a list of machines <sigh>

    CTRL+F to find DS3615 and there you are......

    It depends what you are trying to achieve, if you just want to run DSM on the box across the 4 drives then you don't want either the SATA expansion card or graphics card. The BIOS you have will do. You just need to make sure that the drives are in AHCI mode and that C1 is disabled in the BIOS. You will need the 1.03b DS3615xs or DS3617xs loader and 6.2.3.

    You can ignore references to setting csm / legacy mode because that is all the N40L has.
