Hiya, I'm in a similar situation... my Gen8 system that is flawlessly running for a couple of years now is: DS3615xs INTEL Core i3-4130 4096 MB DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 1 I've never updated this setup... now I'm wondering if I should, considering the golden rule: never touch a running system ;-) What good would it bring to update ? Hallo Haydibe, vielen Dank für deine Antwort. Zusammengefasst entnehme ich, das man auf dem Gen8 keinen VM Server betreiben sollte... besonders nicht für meinen Anwendungsfall. Da ist der Aufwand höher als der Nutzen. Ich wollte mich rein aus Neugier mit Ubuntu beschäftigen, zusätzlich brauche ich sehr selten eine Windows VM (die aber auch USB Geräte von meinem MacBook benutzen kann) um meinen Beamer mit HCFR zu kalibrieren. Bisher habe ich eine lokale VM in VMWare auf meinem Mac... Netzwerkgeschwindigkeit: Hast du einen Tip wo ich tunen könnte ? LG

Hallo, Mein G8 hat noch die G1610 CPU mit bald 4x3TB RAID 5 und 8GB RAM (upgrade auf 12 oder 16 geplant). Installiert ist XPenology mit DSM 6.1 Der Server dient ausschliesslich als Datengrab... und das bisher sehr zuverlässig in annehmbarer Geschwindigkeit... gleich meine erste Frage: Sind 15 MB/s up und 50 MB/s down über SMB in einem Gbit Netzwerk ok, oder geht da auch mehr ??? Ich würde auch gerne die ein oder andere VM bei Bedarf laufen lassen (Ubuntu, Win10)... ist Synologys VMM oder php Virtualbox brauchbar für einfache Dinge ? Reicht meine Hardware dazu aus oder bräuchte ich eine andere CPU oder mehr Speicher ? ESXI trau ich mich nicht so richtig ran... wäre wahrscheinlich auch overkill für eine gelegentliche VM. Ganz herzlichen Dank für jeden input. LG

I'm not sure where, but I read somewhere to register with Synology to confirm the SN is valid for the right product... I wondered about exactly the same (raising a flag) but I thought I'd follow the instructions by the letter. I will delete the registered SN at Synology now. BR

Hi all, I'm an absolute Beginner when it comes to DSM... and even Server Config in general. I got a ProLiant 8Gen machine yesterday and plan to install 6.1 following the tutorial... I successfully generated a SN and registered at Synology... Changes that are required in the grub.cfg are vid, pid, sn and mac "Change mac1=0011322CA785 to mac1=[your NIC MAC address #1]" Question: Am I supposed/is there anything to consider using the real MAC adress of the Server machine ??
