OK. I can confirm that the origin of my problem was probably a driver incompatibility or something under DS3617xs (loader 1.03b).
After upgrading the hardware to support DS918+ (loader 1.04b) the system is stable with these 4-ports NICs.
Thanks

PS: How can I mark this topic as solved now?

This is normal if you log in with admin account and you have home directories turned on, and can be ignored.
You need to elevate your privileges to edit files. Look up "Linux root" and review all of its risks. The command to elevate admin to root is sudo -i
Of course! how could I not immediately have thought about sudo... This shows my lack of regular use of linux since a very (very) long time. 🤭
Thanks a lot

Another change that must be made via DSM command line.
Edit /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf, search for "maxlanport" then change from "2" to "4", then reboot
I get this when I try to SSH into my xpen:
QuoteCould not chdir to home directory /var/services/homes/ADMINUSERNAME: No such file or directory
Then if I try to use vi to edit /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf it says the file is read-only

Where should I enter these commands? In the Grub command line environment?
nope... not here.
I guess it's one of these things were I need to access the DS via SSH. I only did that a few times (under guidance) and I'm not familiar with it but I 'll get used to it

Thanks.
Synoboot1... I assume it is the name of the device corresponding to the USB loader, right?
Where should I enter these commands? In the Grub command line environment?
I guess I should omit the "#" right? Excuse the fact that I am not (yet) familiar with CLI. AFAIU "#" is used to comment things in files containing code.
I'm not familiar with vi either but I'll learn.
Thanks again

Yes I migrated from 103b 3617xs to 1.04b 918+.
I don't know what maxlanport is, so I didn't change anything.
I'll google that and see if I can find information.
Or maybe you can point to a link if you have time.
Thanks a lot

Hi
As described in this post (Note 4), I understand that once the USB loader is made I can still edit parameters (like vid, pid, mac address, ...) by:
- pressing C in the Grub Boot Menu
It is explained how to edit parameters.
AFAIU, this method can also be used to add parameters (e.g. missing mac addresses). Please correct me if I misunderstood.
Now, I wonder how to remove parameters. For, instance if I want to delete set mac2=..., set mac3=... etc..
How should I do it? Is it possible from this Grub command line environment? Or do I need to edit grub.cfg in the image file and burn it again?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

OK...
AFAICU from this post, set netif_num= should not matter too much since it should automagically be corrected according to what is declared as set mac1=, set mac2= etc...
(I still wonder what would happen if grub.cfg sets more mac addresses than there are actual physical LAN ports, though. For instance if 4 macs are set in grub.cfg while only one LAN port is present. In this case netif_num would be 4)
Anyways. I decided to migrate the rig to 1.04b (918+) using supported hardware:
4770k
z87-express based MB
Same PSU, same disks and same RAM
no more PCIe sATA controller required
Same PCIe quad port NIC (based on RTL8111G chipset)
the onboard LAN is disabled in BIOS
After migration, DSM only detects 2 LAN ports out of the 4. This is new. A new problem...
I'm currently testing if LACP over 2 ports is stable or not (single-port Ethernet was stable for 24h, which still might be luck)
I tried another unit of the same quad-port NIC -> same thing (only 2 LAN ports detected)
I tried another quad-port NIC (based on i350) -> same thing (only 2 LAN ports detected)
Any ideas?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

By reading a bit more, I just realized that grub.cfg contains the following argument:
set netif_num=1
I wonder if this could be the source of all my problems with my NICs.
I never touched it (left "=1" while I have multiple LAN ports.
Were can I find more information about what it does and how I am supposed to set it up.
Especially when the onboard LAN is disabled. Does it still count as one or not?
Thanks a lot for your help.

As mentioned on this thread, I ordered 2 quad port NICs based on intel i350.
1 for "machineB" and one for a future setup.
Both of them work in random windows PCs I have around.
None of them work in machineB. I mean the system won't even post with this NIC (while it work OK with a single-port NIC).
This is a nightmare... but it's not related to XPEnology in this case, I guess. Since the system won't even post...

Hi
Just received 2 quad-port NICs based in Intel i350.
both of them work in random windows machines that I have around.
None of them work in my xpen system (aka "machineB" in this thread). Imean thy system won't even post... MachineB still boots ok with the single-port NIC I was using previously.
I guess there must be some other hardware incompatibility or issue. IDK. I'm pretty much lost right now...

I have no idea what this means. I guess this means I didn't do any such customization.

This implies you would be doing this without a backup, if that is true it is a Bad Idea. An installation error can easily overwrite your array (at worst) or have to repeat the install because of a compatibility/configuration problem (at best).
I understand your point and you are perfectly right. Thank you for the heads up
In my case, the disks contain the backup from another DS. Thus loosing the backup data during migration would be inconvenient but not necessarily dramatic since the original data are present on the other DS.
Thanks a lot

Hi
Is it possible to migrate an install running 1.03b (3617xs), DSM 6.2.3, onto a new rig that is compatible with 1.04b (918+)?
Or do I need to setup DSM 6.2.3 on the the 918+ and then copy the data from the 3617xs? (I don't have the required disks available...)
Both current and future CPUs have not more than 8 threads.
Thank you very much in advance for your feedback.

So Intel 82571EB?
Anyways, these seem to be pretty hard to find these days.
I'm gonna try a quad-port NIC based on the aforementioned i350 and see if it works ootb.
Thanks

I was running HP card under 3615xs loader. This was a while ago, but I didn't need any drivers to make it work.
The card was:
HP 435508-B21
Thanks
What chipset is that (google didn't help me much).
Is it NC364T?

I pass this through and never had an issue with it (DS918+). i350 chips was launched in 2011. I do not see any reason not to be supported.
@IG-88 do you know if this card would require any special drivers for 3617xs & 1.03b?

Hi,
As you could tell from the threads I started about issues with quad-port NICs from DeLock (Realtek RTL8111G), I am in a pretty annoying situation.
I am currently considering returning these cards and buy a different model.
The following cards are priced close enough and uses the BCM5719 chipset (AFAIU)
- ThinkSystem Broadcom 5719 1GbE RJ45 4-Port PCIe Ethernet Adapter
However, reading this, I wonder if it will work in ds3617xs with loader 1.03b.
Or would I need extra drivers?
Or wouldn't it work at all unless 918+ & 1.04b?
All the aforementioned NICs are PCIe2.0 x4
Cheaper alternatives include PCIe2.0 x1 but I was told to avoid these since the bandwidth could be limiting (although theoretically PCIe2.0 x1 is just enough for 4 GbE concurrent connections)
- DeLock 89025 (based on Realtek RTL8111F)
- Exsys 6084 (based on Realtek RTL8153B) !!"The Product is in PCIExpressform factor with a built-in USB3.1 (Gen 1)Host Controllerand 4 USB3.1 Gigabit Ethernet Converters to provide an instant expansion of 4Gigabit Ethernet ports for your Desktop, Server and Thin-Client computers."!!
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

I tried the following after machineB lost network connection again
(2 RAM modules, quad-port NIC in bond connection, no longer detected in Synology Assistant)
- I went into the BIOS and re-enabled the onboard NIC
- I search the NAS with Synology Assistant
- The NAS now was found twice :
1x for the quad-port NIC -> connection failed /ready
1x for the onboard NIC -> ready
- I could only connect to the NAS using the IP for the onboard NIC
- In DSM both the bond connection (quad-port NIC) and the new LAN5 (onboard GbE) are indicated as OK and connected.
- After a reboot, Synology Assistant only detects the NAS once (LAN5). No longer via the quad-port NIC. Although DSM still reports the bond connection as connected.
-
Also, machineB seems to work fine when I replace this quad-port NIC with any single-port GbE NIC.
I guess this means the rest of the hardware is working alright, doesn't it?
Connection loss / instability?
in DSM 6.x

Maybe a final question to @flyride
Why is there a limit for NIC ports?
What would happen if I set "maxlanport" to, let's say, 200?
If I had enough Ethernet ports, could I use more than 4?
Could I aggregate like 5, 6 or 8 ports, for instance?
Thanks
