Main and Important 918+, fake error from SSD, Most likely Synology Compatibility. Need 2tb working urgently. Help please.

Captainfingerbang

Question

I am on 7.2 Ds918+ WITH REAL MAC SERIAL

i have a  few perfectly good 2tb micron 1100 ssd that's been in my Xpenology 3+ years only 1 giving me errors now, i've checked on many other devices and working perfectly. Its 1 2tb micron ssd. These are basically tanks to me.

But its ruining my one important volume/diskstation. The errors i am sure are due to drive not being on new "compatibility list". Please tell me how i can fix ssd not on compatibility Or what do you do about synology blocking compatibility of drives and their serials?

Tonight its gave me errors, took it out, change hardware id/serial temporarily and that worked, but then it did not work. Tried again, recognized drive but came back with errors.

Tried al sorts of tools in windows/linux. The drive is FINE...

. Does anyone's software have ssd/hdd compatibility update fixer for drives for TCRP?

Have you seen this tool? https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/11c4yby/script_to_add_synology_your_drives_to_your/?utm_source=embedv2&utm_medium=post_embed&utm_content=post_title&embed_host_url=https%3A%2F%2Fxpenology.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php

Please help I really look to all of your for advice in urgent situations, please

How do other people get around having to buy expensive Synology drives? I already PAID for the ds918 ONCE!

Here is my boot screen and my errors below that

I think we may be able to find the cause.
Could you please wait for a moment?
Analysis may take some time.

I will create an environment similar to yours.

Prepare ds918+ and enter junior mode.

Ok but isnt the most likely thing, that i simply broke my machine> And yours will be fine? You dont have those micron 1100 drives installed do you?

No offense, i am ever so greatful... But im starting to worry that im ******* out of luck. FOOBAR, screwed here. NO?

I don't have micron 1100. However, I can simulate the situation using only the contents of /etc/disk_db.json that you provide.

ok. Well if I knew more than you I would not begging for your help.

Would you recommend making a differential backup at this point?

I'm sure it's not more than a terabyte.

What clearly stands out to me is the version of DSM that I have. It appears as if it's one or two versions ahead along with the update from yesterday for the compatibility.

I haven't even touched this Nas other than streaming DLNA. My update settings are to not update.

This is the part I truly don't understand

I keep these 2 machines on same DSM for a reason. But this doesnt make sense.

I think the cause may be found out. Micron 1100 already exists in DATABASE.

It seems to be related to what Google mentioned earlier. Although it exists in DATABASE,

it seems that some part is being disturbed by being disabled.

I will find more details and show you.

This is the result of analysis.
The former is a disk model officially supported by Synology DS918+ and is recorded in DATABASE.

The latter is what my script generates.
The former content seems to cause problems in REDPILL.

I will supplement my script by deleting and replacing the existing model contents.
You should try my modified script first.
I will provide it again after it is corrected.

I wish we would focus only on this problem, which is a database issue.

My apologies. It is sometimes hard to understand you because your vernacular is much more eloquent than mine.

The process of changing to a new jq script is not easy.
It seems like it will take a long time.
You might want to sleep in if possible and see the results tomorrow.

Ok i understand. Thank you for giving this your best shot. Some things just aren't able to be solved. You certainly seemed to have gave it your best..

Many kind thanks

PS... Should i just wipe the whole thing after confirming 2nd backup?

Thanks to you, I'm glad there's one thing I can improve on.

By the way, I don't know why you are thinking about backing up and formatting.
Just record the firmware information in the database and the disk will be revived.
Is this disk raided with another disk?

The error has been corrected and distributed.
Already existing models will be skipped and nothing will be touched.

My script modified the compatibility list provided by Synology mentioned above.

It seems that modifications to the Micron 1100 content actually became a problem.
Skip it without any processing as shown below to maintain original compatibility.

https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tcrp-addons/commit/9f03acde9bfcd88b9195efae802eac39a4b8846a

You will need to rebuild the loader.

If you reboot after building the loader, you will see a recovery message once.
Please proceed with recovery only once.

Please provide feedback on how the disk database has been re-applied.

Hi Peter I am so grateful for your help, your help is the best holiday gift i have received, but i have concerns.

I've not been on this site for some time due to a strict Chemotherapy schedule this past year.

So i have missed the news of TCRP and Xpenology such as the entire 7.2.1-69057 update and that it may not tell you when it decides to update in future

ALSO: I learned that the DS918+ Now requires some special patch? 7.2.1-69057 Release notes for DS918+  LOOKS LIKE BAD NEWS!

I am ready to do this right now, but i need three questions answered please!

  1. My language barrier is preventing me from understanding what you want me to do with this??? https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tcrp-addons/commit/9f03acde9bfcd88b9195efae802eac39a4b8846a
  2. I don't understand if you are asking me to: Rebuild the loader from scratch? From beginning like from an .ISO? Like download all your files OR do you mean rebuild it inside of my current bootable USB? And am i supposed to be updating to the very latest DSM?
  3. More over, even though i now understand i do not need to do backup because this will restore my NAS with files,  i need to understand exactly what you mean when you state "Just record the firmware information in the database" and the disk will be revived. Which Firmware information are you referring to? I've never heard this terminology. Do you mean which firmware im currently on? Or like my Serial/MAC info???
  4.  You say "skip for already exists models" for this: https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tcrp-addons/commit/9f03acde9bfcd88b9195efae802eac39a4b8846a So am i skipping this or no?

I promise after this i wont bother too much

RE: Your question: Is this disk raided with another disk? NO this entire thing has been in SHR for YEARS.

Mister Peter Sir you are THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have spoken too soon, i hope not.  But my pool is repairing.

But i did what you told me. And though it wasnt exactly how you said, its showing it needs firmware update!

How do i prevent SSD/hdd Firmware updates now?

The Micron 1100 SSD in the compatibility list supported by Synology seems to be suitable according to Synology's guidelines.

https://www.synology.com/en-uk/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS918%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim

Did my changed script make any changes to your ds918+?

The fact that the firmware version is missing from the already existing db information is something that has already been compared referring to the former/latter if we go back to our conversation.

I would like to hear @007revad's opinion on how compatible products such as 1100 should be handled. With his help, we will decide on a corrective direction for this problem.

I wish I was as informed about all of this as you to properly answer your questions.

RE: After i used your script and your other suggestions, it was less than 1.5 hours until the entire 918+ 14TB was fully back to repaired state and performing extraordinarily outstanding! You should feel proud my friend.

At this point i don't think one can depend on Synology's brand. Imagine yourself running a production environment with this hardware for someone like your employer or Boss, and nonsense like this happens? ( What i refer to is the fact that i had 2 identical micron 1100 2tb ssd's with identical firmware yet Synology shut 1 of them down- degraded, supposedly over firmware.

If that happened at my old workplace and we lost production because of this i would have been fired from my job, gotten severely beaten on the way out, and then they probably would have sued me for everything that I am worth, which is not much.

PETER SUH IS A ROCKSTAR!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, i wanted to make a quick point or maybe even ponder a quick question...

I Feel that synergies decision to do what they will with your Hardware is insane. Is Synology claiming that a drive must have the newest firmware to work properly or even to be healthy or for longevity?

Because if that's the case, they ******* up.  See my Micron 1100 2tb came from FACTORY with NEWER firmware than Synology shows ANYWHERE for micron on the compatibility list.  See BOTH my drives firmware is M0MU033, versions newer than any other firmware they have for these drives. So ask yourself, are they looking out for your best interests? Or are they concerned with their pockets?

Actually your Micron 1100 will be one of these two.

I think you will see this same message with genuine Synology products as well?
If you get this error message: “Unrecognized firmware version, please update the drive database.

What kind of processing was possible through the link according to the instructions?
