eric Posted September 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2013 Hey buddies, I have installed DSM4.1 (DS3612xs, build2668) on my DIY box (with onboard NIC chipset RT8111F), and I have created 1 volume with 4 HDDs running Raid5. And now I'd like to upgrade the system to DSM4.2 (DS3612xs build3211). I'm wondering whether backup data is necessary. If the upgrade will continue recognizing my volume? Is it risky to upgrade the system without data backup? Thanks!
XPEH Posted September 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2013 That depends on how you value your data. If you don't mind gambling with chance of loosing all your data, you can skip the backup. If your data is of any importance, back it up before any modification and often backup in the normal use.
djelusion Posted September 14, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 14, 2013 my experience with upgrading is you'll be screwed.. i would port everything off and then start all over if you are updating.. In my attempts its never gone well and I just lived with erasing my stuff. luckily this is serving as a redundant backup so wiping away is ok.. just the reconfiguring sucks
