djwayne1985 Posted August 26, 2014 #1 Posted August 26, 2014 hi all i was just wondering if there is a way i can install the SYNOLOGY DSM 5.0 (4493) (NON ESXi) on a internal hdd and have it boot from that hdd please as i have plent of pc's laying around but not enough usb flash drives
Schnapps Posted August 26, 2014 #2 Posted August 26, 2014 Not really. On the USB side only the boot part is kept. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
djwayne1985 Posted August 26, 2014 Author #3 Posted August 26, 2014 ok thats a shame do we know if anyone is planning on making this possible ??
Schnapps Posted August 26, 2014 #4 Posted August 26, 2014 You could try to write that ISO to a HDD but I'm not 100% sure it will NOT work. Just 99% Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
djwayne1985 Posted August 26, 2014 Author #5 Posted August 26, 2014 ok how would i write the iso to the hdd ?? as i can test stuff like this for people
htpcdude Posted August 27, 2014 #6 Posted August 27, 2014 This is doable although I have never tried it. You'll can search for posts on XPEnology on ESXi hosts, as they use a virtual disk device to boot. Or search for posts where people are using a DOM instead of a USB flash drive. The answer is in the forums but you have to do the detective work in finding it.
djwayne1985 Posted August 27, 2014 Author #7 Posted August 27, 2014 Ok thankyou i will look into the dom side and see what i can find
vizkoze Posted August 27, 2014 #8 Posted August 27, 2014 You could try writing the boot.iso to a cd or dvd disk and boot from that if the old computers have an optical drive. I do it like that because my motherboard had problems booting from usb.
djwayne1985 Posted August 27, 2014 Author #9 Posted August 27, 2014 i do have the files but im just trying to have it so i only have nothing but hdd's inside and possibly boot from a partitioned hdd i.e. i have partition guru and would love to be able to find a way i can create a boot partition for the nanoboot files to go into and then try and make my pc boot from that partition but this is something i am defo new to and not sure on how to do it and would love it if someone that knows how to do this could possibly help me with this
djwayne1985 Posted August 27, 2014 Author #10 Posted August 27, 2014 right fokes just to confirm does some people that have lets say the nanoboot boot from pata port and correct me if im wrong but aint the pata port for a ide hdd if so this is exactly what i am trying to do which is get the nanoboot to boot from a old ide hdd ?? also thoes that has managed this please can you help me on what i am doing wrong
htpcdude Posted August 28, 2014 #11 Posted August 28, 2014 Since I posted saying this was doable, I feel obligated to make some additional comments. You are right, it seems this is only possible with an IDE (PATA) device. The DOM (Disk On Module) devices people are using are IDE DOMs not SATA DOMs. XPEnology on ESXi hosts are also booting from a virtual disk running off of a virtual IDE controller.
