I don't set DSM to auto update. I have it set to notify me when updates are available. These are my first test XPenology vms in ESXi and I was wondering if there was something I missed in the forums about needing to manually update. I've been running XPenology via bare metal up until now. Thanks for replying

Hi, I have two questions Does DSM 6.2.2-24922 in ESXi auto update? I created two DSM 6.2.2-24922 VMs, both DS3615xs, with the 1.03b loader. One is on Update 4 and the other is on Update 6. It's been days but 6.2.2-24922 Update 4 never updates to Update 6. When adding disks via RDM, is there any performance difference whether the disks are all added to one virtual SATA controller vs multiple virtual SATA controllers? Thanks,

Does it have the latest BIOS? Try going into the BIOS, Boot, USB Mass Storage Emulation Type and changed the setting from "Auto" to "All Fixed Disc"

I've rebooted my router and released the DHCP assigned address but the problem still persists. I've given up on this motherboard for now as I've got plenty of other ones to use as my test system. Took me 10 minutes to bring up another DSM 5.2 and upgrade directly to DSM 6.1 using Jun's alpha loader.

I had a test system running DSM 5.2-5967 update 2 with the XPEnoboot 5.2-5967.1 loader. It had been updated many times without issue and I used it to test upgrade to DSM 6.0.2-8451 update 9 with Jun's Mod V1.01 loader. I mistakenly deleted some packages and the system became unusable so I decided to re-install. Now I can't get Synology Assistant to see the unit using Jun's loaders. DHCP is assigning an IP address but I can't ping it. I've used different USB sticks and hard drives, wiping them completely each time. I even went back to DSM 5.2-5967 update 2 with the XPEnoboot 5.2-5967.1 loader and got the system re-installed. But I still can't upgrade it to DSM 6 with Jun's loader, not even the V1.02-alpha. I'v also tried not connecting my hard drives with the same results. I've done DSM 5.2 to DSM 6 upgrades on five different systems so I'm pretty confident I didn't mess up the grub.cfg. Any suggestions?

Not completely correct. You can never add a disk that is smaller than the smallest original member of the SHR. If you create an SHR volume with 3 drives (3TB, 4TB, 5TB), you can never add anything smaller than a 3TB drive.

Didn't it ask you for an admin password during installation? Also, DSM 6 can't have a blank admin password.

First determine if this is a hardware or software issue. I would try booting with a linux live USB drive to make sure you can see all the hard drives via gparted. Which DSM version and loader are you using?

In addition to the LattePanda, there is also the UDOO X86 (I think these are X64 CPUs even though the name is UDOO X86), the UP board, and soon to be released UP Squared. I don't have any of these so driver support is unknown. The LattePanda would also be my last choice as it doesn't have support for linux. Also, Synology HA requires both units have identical DSM versions and be identical models/models specifically claimed by Synology to support Synology High Availability. Both units must have the same quantity of disks and SHR volumes are not supported.

1. For the Rosewill RSV-S4-X: If the eSATA is port multiplier compatible, you will see four 1T drives. What raid you set up depends on the OS. If the eSATA is not port multiplier compatible, you will only see one 1T drive. The raid functionality of the above enclosure depends entirely on the controller it is attached to. On other enclosures, the raid functionality is built into the enclosure. See Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID 4. 2. DSM automatically shares USB connected drives as usbshare1, usbshare2, etc...

As always, I have not been able to get hibernation to work. I can provide no further information on WOL.

WOL from off is not a problem, just tested. WOL from hibernation\sleep is going to be a problem. You should be aware that there are different builds of the boot loader available. I am currently running XPEnoboot 5.2-5644 with DSM 5.2-5967 Update 1. Certain power settings are broken, one of which is HDD hibernation so I cannot test. XPEnoboot 5.2-5967.1 was just released and it is supposed to have fixed the power issues with DSM 5.2-5967. I will try to test this soon.

RAID1 mirror should not be a problem. If DSM sees two SATA hard drives, it will let you mirror. I have two identical drives set up as SHR in my laptop, which basically is a mirror because it is only two drives. I chose SHR for flexibility if I ever wanted to add more drives. The HD adapters I use were originally designed by Dell for their own laptops. I got OEM versions on eBay. That ICY dock adapter linked by AllGamer looks pretty neat. I like that it is metal which helps with heat. The one from Dell\OEM are mostly plastic. I run my systems 24X7 but the Dell Latitude BIOSs have been really good for WOL. From what power state do you want to WOL from, off or sleep? WOL from off is easier than from sleep. WOL from off is entirely controlled by the BIOS. WOL from sleep usually requires the host OS to be configured correctly.

Yes, I have. All of them have been Dell Latitudes and I am currently running it on a D6420. Some of these have an eSATA port but they are not port multiplier compatible. If you connect the Dell laptop to an eSATA enclosure that supports multiple disks, it will only see one drive. You're only option is to use an external enclosure that has RAID0/RAID1 built in and only shows the host computer one LUN. USB drives cannot be part of any Synology RAID. All the laptops I used had a CD-ROM drive in a media bay. There are SATA HD adapter trays that plug into the bay and shows as a second SATA hard drive. This limits the size of the hard drives available. My laptop Xpenology system is used only for downloading so the 2.5 HDs don't have to be large capacity. I have a second Xpenology system in a standard mini-tower with six 3.5 HDs.

For $10 more, should have gone with the M42S-7 that has the J1900.

Octavean, you are correct. I didn't realize Plex now requires $ activation for most of their player software. I got the lifetime Plex Pass before they made this change so I didn't notice it.

I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that. However, Video Station and Plex share much of the same functionailty. However, you can presumably stream to many different types of devices with Video Station and not have to pay for a Plex pass to do it. You can stream to many different types of devices with Plex. Plex pass is not required for this functionality.

Unfortunatelly it doesn't work. I set dns to 8.8.8.8, but still cannot connect. Very frustrating. Have you tried reinstalling the Synology certificate? Also, this viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6760

All the latest images are for 64bit CPUs, you are using a 32bit CPU. You can go to http://xpenology.me/downloads/ and try one of the Nanoboot images under Nanoboot DSM-5.0-4528 DS214Play. The ones with x86 in the filename.

Correct, using an eSATA connection will allow the drives connected to be part of a Synology RAID volume. But you are doing this on a laptop. I've been using Dell Latitudes and their eSATA ports are not port multiplier capable. You will only see one drive from the enclosure. I've tried one eSATA ExpressCard adapter with port multiplier capability but then Xpenology does not have the right driver for the adapter. It works fine under Windows 7. I gave up and am only running 2 identical hard drives in SHR, one in a SATA bay adapter in lieu of the optical drive. So if you want to use your existing laptop and more than two drives, an enclosure with built in RAID is the only option. You can have it connect via USB or eSATA. I'd prefer eSATA (This is for future proofing, in case you want to move away from using a laptop for Xpenology). Have you looked at the enclosures from Mediasonic? They have eSATA/USB/Firewire in different combinations, will auto wake up/sleep with the host, and can do RAID/JBOD. I've tested a couple bought from eBay and they are cool, but I have not used them extensively to say how well they work 24X7. Edit: I noticed humancaviar says he used a StarTech ECESAT32 on a Lenovo x220 to connect to a Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 (I have the same one). His guide came out one year after my attempt. He was using Nanoboot but under ESXi. Do you want to use RAID volumes? USB connected drives cannot be made part of any Synology RAID volume. They are only accessible as usbshare?(-?) in Shared Folders. An enclosure with built in RAID support will make the drives in it appear as one large hard drive to the OS (DSM), so there will be no confusion with Synology RAID volumes. But this RAID enclosure is connected via USB, so there is no option for it to work with Synology RAID volumes.

I've seen where a hdd in a computer will work with Windows but not with Synology/Xpenology. Testing the hdd in another PC is not the best test. Was that a quick or long format? You can try installing a linux distro like Ubuntu onto the laptop as a slightly better test.
