fienine Posted May 2, 2013 #1 Posted May 2, 2013 Dear all experienced user, I want to setup DSM on my existing HTPC with Windows 7. Is it possible to install DSM on another harddisk and allow dual booting between DSM and Win 7? Thanks in advanced.
kenysc Posted May 2, 2013 #2 Posted May 2, 2013 I would suggest you 1st get DSM installed and running fine in your RAID disk. Then you put an additonal disk / SSD to the box and install Win7. If you can select the boot order in BIOS and get both running fine then it's almost done, just it would be prefect to add a boot menu in Win7 side to select which OS you want to boot from.
fienine Posted May 3, 2013 Author #3 Posted May 3, 2013 Thanks for your reply. I just went thru many topics in this forum. I learned that the DSM booting image must be installed in a USB drive and DSM system to be installed to another HDD. My HTPC motherboard doesn't get any RAID controller. But I got an external USB 3.0 4 bays SATA HDD enclosure. Can I install the DSM system into the HDDs in this HDD enclosures? Can the HDD enclosure be recognized during DSM installation process. By the way, do you think running DSM in VM of Windows 7 is a better idea? Thanks again. I would suggest you 1st get DSM installed and running fine in your RAID disk. tamamma Posted February 17, 2017 #4 Posted February 17, 2017 This is an interesting solution, to have for example DSM and since it does not support hardware acecleration(tell me if i'm wrong), install an Operative System that supports it with PLEX or XBMC, on another HDD. Suggestions?
