  1. There is at least 2 ways as far as I know: bare metal vs virtual machine, and here are some basic differences: * Bare Metal: - Install DSM directly on your drive - Good enough for older or weak hardware - Might not able to take out HDDs and put in other machines * ESXi (Virtual Machine): - Install DSM on Virtual Machine - Require newer or stronger hardware (requirements to run VM) - Able to take out HDDs and put in another VMs Since my hardware are follows: - MB: old Intel mITX - CPU: old Intel Atom 1.6GHz (2 cores / 4 threats) - RAM: 4GB DDR3 (max supported) - HDD: 1TB 7200rpm x 1 - SSD: 16GB (but not implemented yet, would use it for ESXi later) - USB: 64MB - PSU: 450W - Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Since my hw is old and weak and I've got them all Free After Rebates except the case and 1TB HDD I've paid 20 bucks each after rebates and coupons, so I've only paid 40 bucks plus tax for the whole system, I'm using them to experiment and to familiar myself with DSM first, and note that don't use 32MB or smaller size USB since it will be formatted as FAT not FAT32 so use at least 64MB USB. Here is the Bare Metal guide that I've used: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3462 Then before I build a strong hw for real activities, I would use this same setup to experiment ESXi with these guides: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3564 viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3132 Hope this helps
  2. Theory, cable should not be degraded; however, there is no warranty the connection b/w the head and the cable is as good, so if you constantly download or transfer big files, stream large video files... your cables might go bad due to excessive heat. Similarly, the components inside routers, modems... have their lives and of course some would last longer and that's why they advertise "solid cap, military grade, ... and also commercial vs business..." but, a big BUT, those premium hardware would cost a fortune and don't get me wrong, a lot of people do like to spend money to get the good stuffs but I personally like a simple math that I'd spend 10 or 20 bucks for a router on clearance and can only use it for 2 years or so, instead a very good router cost $100+ that can be used for 5+ years because technology changes so quickly, so after 2 years, I might able to get a new-tech router, thus no matter how good an expensive router is, it cannot compete with new-tech one, and that's why I've bought my 60" 3D Smart LED (thin) TV for 700 bucks instead more than 7 thousands when it first came out. Anyways, it's just my 2-cent
  3. If you've already had problem with older DSM, it's not software issue but it's your hardware and if you've also had problem on other pc, it's most likely your Ethernet cable, modem cable, router, modem... so first try different Ethernet cable, and if using Wi-Fi dongle, try connect it directly with Ethernet cable, and if still have problem, then try different modem cable, then different router, then different modem...
  4. You must log in as root and issue command su or su -
  5. CPU hits 97% for just playing one 720P video?? It must be something really wrong with your system because I've recently experimented to put DSM 5.0-4493u3 on a system that has an old board with old Atom 1.8GHz (2c/4t) and max out 4GB RAM it can support and from the system monitor, it shows anywhere between 60-80% for receiving wireless Acronis backups from 4 PCs, wireless streaming 3 different movies to 3 different TV while the system itself has more than 20 active downloads... I would first check the heat dissipates of your system, next is trying different RAM, HDD/SSD, and if still the same, try different processor which might be on the verge of dying...
  6. Got couple Qnap 220 on Black Friday to play with, but never got any Synology or Asustor, so just recently put DSM 5.0-4493u3 on a old board with Atom 1.8GHz (2c/4t) and max 4G RAM it can support to experiment. Not sure because the Qnap I got is 1.6GHz ARM base or its limit of 512MB RAM, the performance of DSM 5.0-4493u3 is far outperformed the Qnap 4.1.0. Even I agree that Qnap expand some features beyond its competitors such as displaying photos on login page so you don't need to log in to show off you photo album... and similar to Asustor, Qnap already implemented XBMC which is missing on Synology, I would rather try Asustor as some members on this forum already get involved in the process to make it "live" so hope it would available to everybody soon
  7. Synology, Qnap, Asustor, each has its good, but so far it seems Asustor ports a lot more app add-on, especially XBMC which is missing from Synology builds, so just like some others, I also hope that this project would go live soon so we have more choices to either connecting directly to NAS using Asustor or connecting to NAS through browsers using Xpenology...
  8. Very nice one At least for me, it give me a very clear path on what to do when combining this guide and the other Cheer!! I'll buy you a beer (as "big" donation is on the way)
  9. Regarding your build I would recommend to google or check your harware here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compati ... search.php The most important is that your LAN and SATA is compatible. You may need to buy a PCI raid/hba kontroller in order to get everything to work nicely. I thought about answering all your questions one-by-one, but all of them show that you do not understand ESXI. You'll need to read some guides or take a look at some tutorials and you'll quickly understand how it works, it not difficult. Just make sure you connect to your ESXI host from "VMware vSphere Client" once done. I could write a guide on how to install ESXI and setup everything to play nicely if anyone is interested. I have now a perfect setup running stable since I've installed it with 20TB of storage. Thank you for your advice; I will check some basic guides/tutors for ESXi. It would be nice if you make some step-by-step ESXi guides which then can be used for Xpenology systems
  10. No, it's one line not two so the whole thing is 2 lines instead 3. Also, you might need to perform as Super User, so even logged in as root, just issue command su before these two su sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /autoupd@te.info > /autoupd@te.info1 mv /autoupd@te.info1 /autoupd@te.info
  11. @ LeeBear & berwhale Nice trick. Thanks
  12. No audio?? Direct or indirect? If you directly connect your Xpenology system through VGA/DVI/HDMI, you can only get the Nanoboot screen which is no sound and correct me if I'm wrong since you can do something to get video/audio directly. On the other hand, most people would connect their Xpenology systems through Ethernet and they get the video/audio indirectly through their other client systems (browser, window explorer...) If indirect, did you already enable Audio Station, Media Server, or even Video Station... since I don't have any issue on sound when watching a (small test) video clip through browser (Video Station)?
  13. I appreciate it but where is the link?
  14. Does anyone has issue to update? After downloaded and on the process to update, it was displaying 66% and then stop with the pop up message "Fail to update the file. The file is probably corrupt." Already tried too many times and still the same issue. Can you manually download and install this Update 3? If yes, where is the location for download since Synology only post the main streams?
  15. @ rdm Actually, I found another way that you can set to hide this USB from showing up in My Network Places and it won't show up in any connected Windows PC. Didn't check on any other Linux system yet but I assume it should behave the same @ XPEH He he... he he... You will not believe it but I have not just 1 or 2 but couple dozens 32/64MB sticks since we use them for flashing BIOS and firmware as well as system boot testing at work. Imagine a test which will continuously reboot a system about 1000 times in a chamber ranged -30/+60C, C not F, for couple days and it would kill any HDD/SSD even the industrial drives, so it's better to sacrifice some cheap USB sticks instead @ all others It seems I might be wrong about the USB because as soon as I enabled the Download Station, it auto created @download folder on USB and use it for buffer and the speed for download transaction is quite slow and after I managed to set it to the main drive, the @download folder is no longer on USB and the speed is significant improve; however, still see @tmp folder on USB but not sure which app or DSM itself is using it and don't know how to set it to the main drive yet. I guess that on the real Synology systems, they might use the flash ram for buffer and so DSM auto set it on the USB in our systems. If anyone has any idea, I'm all ears TIA
  16. Yep, it's true. After used Win32DiskImager to put Nanoboot on the USB, Win32DiskImager will auto re-format the drive to 16MB regardless how big the size of the USB. The only difference might be the quality or the speed of the USB but only couple seconds slower boot time does not really do any good for me so I've just use a very old 32MB USB for Nanoboot and save my 32GB USB for other good use
  17. Thank you, rdm Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but it seems Nanoboot USB is only used for booting and by the time DSM up, most if not everything is running on/from it and nothing to do with Nanoboot USB anymore?? So I wonder if it's any benefit when using 32GB instead 32MB stick since the Nanoboot image is only 16MB?
  18. Thanks. Will try it tonight For the second question, how do we hide the USB drive?
  19. Just found out that it seems my hardware are not strong enough for ESXi but I still want to try it anyway; worst case, I would go with bare metal guide afteward and so which version of ESXi should I try, 5.1 or even lower? By the way, anyone has issue while installing ESXi, it can't recognize Realtek Ethernet thus it paused and stated no Ethernet detected so no further installation? Edited: Just found some guides online showing that I have to rebuild a custom ESXi 5.5 ISO to include Realtek driver or use ESXi 5.1 which should already include the driver
  20. Now installed using bare metal guide and connected through browser is OK but through VGA/HDMI, only see the Nanoboot screen, how do you change that? Also, how do you hide the USB drive so nobody would accidently make some change on it? TIA
  21. Hi LeeBear, I really appreciate the time it took you to put up this great guide; however, I never used VM and this is my first build so I hope you would pardon my stupid questions below. First thing first, here are my hardware: . Mini ITX board . Dual core HT Atom (2 cores / 4 threats) . Support max 4GB RAM . 16GB USB (label as USB1) . 100GB SSD (label as SSD1) . 1TB HDD (label as HDD1) And here my questions: 1. In first session, you mentioned about "Create new Custom VM on your ESXi host", does it mean that I should install ESXi on HHD1 first before following this guide? 2. In this same first session, "Store VM where you want" mean I should store this new created VM on SSD1? 3. In session [Optional but recommended step], where should I store this recommended "virtual disk"? On SSD1 or HDD1? 4. In session "Adding your Data Drives", where should I store this recommended "Data Drives"? On SSD1 or HDD1? 5. In session 5, where do I "Right Click select “Open Console”"? On my workstation or on ESXi machine? 6. About "Log in using admin account", where does this admin account from? 7. In this same last session 5, where should I "create your Volumes"? Is it the same as "Data Drives" added in previous step? Thank you in advance
  22. Thanks again for very quick reply Mostly DLNA through Ethernet since this box will be away in a high corner, not visible to anybody, but connected directly to the Giga N router almost next to it, I meant N router with Giga ports, and this location is almost in the center of the house so from there, it can be accessed from any TV, PC from any room
  23. Thanks for quick reply However, still confused Let say I have mini-itx with dual core Atom, 64-bit capable, support 4GB DDR3 max, also some 1TB HDD, some 128GB SSD, some 16-32 GB USB... mostly used for media entertainment and/or backup center... Which route should I go? In other words, what benefit of ESXi over bare metal or vise versus? Hope somebody would elaborate a little more. Thanks in advance.
  24. I'm new here and very confused about which method or guideline to follow?? Can someone tell me or point me to the post that has the answers for these question: What different between ESXi and bare metal? What is the minimum hardware for each? Why using ESXi or why using bare metal? Thanks in advance
