Dell T110 as Surveillance NAS?

Recommended Posts

Greetings, everyone!

From http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10921 - it looks like people were able to get a Dell PowerEdge to work with Jun's loader for DSM 6.0.1 using a PERC 6i RAID card. By chance, does anyone know if a similar PowerEdge, a T110, might work with a PERC S300 card and onboard NIC (broadcom chipset)? Second question is I'd like to remove my current DVR and use this system instead since the Surveillance Station is soooo much better, but how would licensing for the cameras work? How many come free and is it possible to buy licenses for an Xpenology build?

the network and storage driver in this are also in the 6.2.3 versions (click on the list to open it)

you also should read this to know about the loaders

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/13333-tutorialreference-6x-loaders-and-platforms/

t110 seems to have a cpu form 2010 so its way to old for 918+

the nic should be no problem

the perc s300 (3G SAS) seems to be based an a sas1068 chip and afair that one has a hardware limit for disks so every disks is cut off at 2.3TB and you wont get more of the disk

at least use something sas2008 based if it needs to be sas (for the backplane?)

if its sata for disks then any decent ahci controller will be ok, maybe 5 port jmb585 based controller would be ok (i dont like asm1166 6port as it will be found as 32 port and block these in dsm)

no, there might be hacked versions some where, the legal way would be to have original synology system, buy cam license for this and share these license with you xpenology over network

no (see above) and with that ancient hardware i'm nor sure if you would be able to use more then 4 cam's

@IG-88, thank you so much for the VERY thorough response. I guess if that's the case, I might see if I can get my hands on my original Synology server to do a proper surveillance station. The server is probably best suited for something else at this time.
