I don't know what apps are you using, but if they are not compatibile with DSM 6 that means that they haven't been updated for a year at least ..
Let's see...
Transmission, Sickbeard, Sonarr, CouchPotato, Deluge, Mosquitto, shall I go on? 90% of the SynoCommunity packages won't run because Synology changed lots of stuff, essentially breaking packages, without a way to fix them easily.

And I really mean it.
I've been around for quite some time now (roughly 3 years, maybe a bit more?), and have been using XPEnology as my NAS OS for quite some time.
Now I've re-initialized my server, and... It sucks. Because I installed 6.0, and a good majority of the 3rd party packages stopped working. Seriously guys, how do you do this? How do you live without almost 90% of all available apps? Is the 6.0 update really worth it that much?
For me, it isn't.

Synology's system has been using GPT for some time now - disk order is not based on the SATA controller, but rather on the GPT disk IDs. Thus, even if you completely replace the hardware under your disks, your OS, settings, everything will be working (since the OS mirrors itself to a smaller partition on each and every storage drive, it will boot no matter what).

If you use any hypervisor, you can emulate any network adapter you want - basically making sure that your Synology is completely supporting everything, without needing to match the hardware or compile drivers.
I'm moving soon to a better flat, and am planning on grabbing a small powerhouse for myself - one part will run XPEnology to host my stuff, one part will run Kodi connected to my TV, for media access. I'm also grabbing a 4K TV, and before you say anything, yes, I know many TVs come with smart software, but none get even close to the multimedia functions of Kodi.

Has anyone taken a crack at borking DSM 6.0 onto a custom built NAS?
DSM 6.0 seems to bring a LOT of wanted additions, and system upgrades. It would be nice to have at least a partially working build of it

If you buy a powerhouse, I'd recommend not directly installing Synology - rather use a hypervisor and emulate XPEnology, alongside with other OS's. That way you can have access to raw power of the machine, while keeping your Synology up and running

Simply said, in its current status, it can not be run on a RasPi.
However unlike many stated before, it is NOT impossible. Currently XPEnology uses an x86 version of Grub, and an x86 base system for the hack to make it work.
For it to work on an ARM based system, you have to do three steps:
- Create an ARM bootable base (easiest, pretty much)
- Modify an ARM Synology image to counter their anti-cracking methods (it is quite well documented on the forums if you look for it)
- Keep it up to date

go to package manager, settings. look for the "trust level" bit which will only install packages from synology. that is the top of three options. change it to the 2nd option (synology and trusted publishers).
that should fix it for you
I am very well aware of the trust level - it is completely disabled, as I would install some self-compiled packages too, in the future. Except NO package can be installed, including update packages.

So, I've been trying this for quite some time.
For some reason I can't install a few apps from various community sources (mainly CPHub). To counter this, I tried to install them manually, however no matter what package I try, I get an "Operation failed" message.
Has anyone ran into this issue before?

Any enclosure that supports USB will work, but they will be considerably slower than SATAIII. You can also use eSATA if your controller is supported, and you have an eSATA port.

It is Win10 related. Something in the SMB stack changed, and unless you're in the same domain, it won't show up. Plex endpoints do appear though, but that's mainly because of the DLNA discovery.

RAM might not be enough. With only a few services (Transmission, SickRage, Plex), on standby, I have around 1.2-1.5GB RAM usage.
To change the serial number, just pop your USB drive into another computer, and edit the syslinux.cfg. To generate a valid serial and MAC, use one of the available russian excel files (I don't have the link and would rather not reupload, but they are available on this very forum, in the Russian section).
To change the MAC address, you have to first look up what type of LAN controller that netbook has. Mine has an Intel controller, and such I used the Intel EEUpdate tool to change the MAC address.

What chipset does you laptop has?
What brand and model is it?
It's an HP Elitebook 8530W, with an Intel Wireless Pro/N (03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300) chipset. It is definitely recognized as BT works through it, and I have BT connectivity.

Hey all!
Long time no see. I've been busy with life, sold my server (moved, couldn't carry it with myself). Now as I got a new laptop, decided to use my old one as a home server.
As it's a laptop (with two hard drives), it has a wireless card built in. However, I can't seem to be able to enable it in a way that Control Panel -> Wireless detects it too as a wireless network adapter. However, BT works just fine.
Has anyone ever successfully enabled their built-in WiFi to be detected as a USB/Compatible one?

What do you use for file transfers? Because on my N54L (pure install, no ESXi), I have the same "issue" using Total Commander or Windows Explorer - it seems like if it was filling a buffer, size around 300MB, then stops for a few moments, and continues. The speed does not drop, like if it was scaling down the transfer, it simply stops, like if it was paused.
I'm kinda sticking to my theory of write buffering here - that seems to be the best explanation so far.

It depends highly on the BIOS of that device. But to tell you the truth, you can probably build the same config, in a different casing, for less money - you're paying up to 50% of the price for the OS you're not going to use any way.
I checked on Amazon, the TS670 costs 1400USD approx, plus shipping. I also built a fast little NAS, and it's less than 950USD (plus shipping)!
Case: BitFenix Phenom
Motherboard: ASUS Z87I-Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770S
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1866 2x8GB
PSU: Corsair RM 550W (bit of an overkill, the whole system eats around 250W with 6HDDs)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master GeminiII M4 58.4 CFM
The motherboard is a powerhouse, it has 6 SATA3 connectors, 6 USB3 and 4 USB2.0 ports on the back plus a header for the front, a PCIe 3.0 slot, DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort built in, AND, most importantly, built in WiFi AC.
The case supports miniITX boards only, but has a nice spacey interior, with up to 6 HDD slots. Or, if you have the money, I'd suggest that you go for the OrigenAE S21T - pricey, but awesome little case! Originally for HTPCs, and you might have some struggle to get the display working with a desktop environment, but it is worth the hassle. Not the money, but the hassle.
Or, if you feel like going over the roof with the motherboard, you can go for a Maximus VI Impact. It has extra BT4.0, and while losing 2 SATA headers, you get an extra SSD slot on the back. Besides, you can get the SATA headers back with an expansion card.
And all of this, for under 1000USD. I think it's a better deal, and you know for sure that it will run Synology properly.

Try reinstalling Transmission, it usually helps. Also, try to access the web UI from the admin panel, not via direct port access.
127.0.0.1/localhost won't work as that's your local PC - if you were on the server, running a GUI with Chrome, then you could access it like that, otherwise, nope.

That model is weird, by default it is a DS3612xs... The serial number should not have any effect on it, as there's a separate zImage parameter (model=modelname) for that.

Try to use gnoBoot's image. For me, so far, it caused no problems with the BIOS (unlike older 4.0 releases)

I can only recommend the N54L. Thought about replacing it a few times (not powerful enough for my taste
), but nothing comes close in question of design, usability, size, and power usage. Maybe the Gen8 microservers, but meh, they look ugly (also, why slim ODD? I wanna have 4x SSDs there!!).All the software you listed will run, but you will have to buff the RAM up. VSphere doesn't even want to install itself on 2GB!

AFAIK Synology DSM does not support screens, so it is pointless to even have the video card in it (except if you use it for BTC/otherC mining. In which case it is still pointless as the electricity bill will be higher than anything you can mine out).

gnoboot, great work as usual. Using your latest image with the 5.0-4458 release, it's working fine so far. Only issue I have is that there's no sit0 support, and I can't initiate a tunnel through Hurricane Electric :/
Is there any chance that you could compile it into the next release?
You have to load ipv6 module, just google for it
Already did so, but no luck. The sit0 device simply does not appear, nor do the commands (IP addresses redacted):

For me, Docker is still a bit of an alien ground. I understand how it works, but setting it up most of the time is very tedious - especially when you have multiple tools to get to work together (Sonarr - Transmission - Plex, just to mention a trio).
I might try it in the future though. For now I'm back to 5.2.
