  1. @ fonix232 :

So, you where actually able to install and run 2012 R2, using the original NIC, (HP NC107i Integrated PCI Express Gigabit Server Adapter) ?

I was trying, using the drivers and firmware for 2112 Essentials, posted here

(My R2 is coming from my Technet account, did not know DreamSpark was offering it yet)

But I ended up like everyone else in this thread with a no-go.

Why would I use Windows ?

Because I have used it for so many years, and would like to play around with the new R2, and to see if I could migrate my old server into new and smaller HW.

Is *nix a better choice for servers ? Yes, I believe so, but the transition is a pain in the b*tt  since I have many services running today,

that I would like to transfer with as little effort as possible. There is a time for computers, and a time for family life.....

Besides, at work we are *"forced" to use Windows, and if this hobby project was turning out OK, I might be able to buy and install some Micro's at work.

So, with Trantors build, there should be no BIOS reset problems with our N54L's ?

    That sounds good.

I have been looking into TheBay_Microserver_Bios_041 that seems to be a good candidate, is this the one you are using ?

Yes I've been using the R2 Essentials package (I believe - have to check my downloads tomorrow). Ethernet did not work out of the box, but after I forced the installation of the card (enable test mode, disable integrity check, and manually force-install it), two reboots later it worked.

Trantor's build is good. And yes, I'm using TheBay's 041 release.

  2. @ hansel: Since the "only" difference between the 40 and the 54 supposedly is the CPU, I guess the same advantages applies, thanks.

Same advantage as it uses the exact same BIOS. So actually you have to flash the N40L patched BIOS.

Seriously, it WORKS PERFECTLY. I had MSS 2012 installed, and it worked really nice..

    Seriously ...

as I was saying, there is problem with the NIC, when using the soon to be public released R2 version of the Server 2012 family

Even if I installed 2102 (or 2008), that is working very well, and trying to update the firmware for the NIC,

I was told by the setup that I already had the most up-to-date version.

When updating from 2012 to R2, same problem with the NIC not working.

More info of this known problem can be found over there ---> http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/forum/67-hp-microserver/

Have you tried R2 on your 54 yet ?

The good thing with that problem, was that I was heading over here to try out what I really wanted to play with

But thanks for the feedback, I will try to read some more in regards to the BIOS, to see what I might be missing out with stock.

It's fun to be part of the Microserver "family", and I might be getting some more of them if I get a good offer again.

I made a friend buy one at the same time that I was getting mine, so I will have to supply him with all the needed support... :ugeek:

Ah yes, sorry. I was using the R2 release (it is the one released on DreamSpark), and it worked fine. Did not test it for long though, as setting up a domain server with RADIUS took two hours, four reboots, and with Synology it is about 15 minutes. But do you actually need MS stuff for a server? I mean, it is fine for desktop, but Linux beats Windows Servers ass back and forth, twice. Flexibility is higher, updates are more frequent, easier to apply, etc.

The BIOS changes can come really handy. I completely finetuned mine, and works perfectly now.

The reset issue does not affect us. This motherboard does not let Synology touch the BIOS settings, and such, it won't be any problem. At least for me, it was never, and it was always my settings.

  3. So, uh, the question is kind of in the title. Did anyone have any success with installing Hamachi? I would need it to access my NAS from outside the network.

    Specs:

    - HP N54L

    - Trantor's 1.1 (still haven't upgraded, sorry )

    - bootstrapped, some extra software.

I've been following this tutorial, but when I try to run the hamachi binaries, they die saying that GLIBCXX_3.4.15 is missing. Given that we don't have a newer glibc, and compiling it would be a pain in the ass, is there any other solution to get Hamachi working?

  4. OK guys I have managed to get my HP N54L Microserver up and running fine with 4x3tb WD Black Drives and 4gb of ram, I managed to get wake on lan working after a bit of research by modifying the mac address in the grub.conf file on the boot drive. I only have a basic understanding of linux and have only had my N54L for 2 days and info about Xpenology seems scattered (can't seem to get 100% correct info because of different builds, custom bios's etc) so I figured I would post this and try get some info from someone who has more experience with the N54L and Xpenology.

    I'm using trantor's dsm 4.2 build 3211 v1.2 and the bays 41 firmware

    1. System beeps not working...anyway to fix?

Not to my knowledge. Does the N54L even have a beeper on board?

    2. Ups support...usb/network? Can someone enlighten me on the status of this? (not a big issue my ups runs it for 2hrs but I would like the synology to auto shutdown if power fails).

Trantor's 1.2 has the required USB modules, meaning you can connect a USB UPS unit and set it up (if it is supported, I don't have a list of them).

    3. Hard drive hibernation...I have read the usb needs to be ejected for the drives to sleep, the nas operates on a power on off schedule during business hours and currently runs a script 5 mins after powering on that ejects the usb drive boot drive (I still havet checked to see if they are sleeping properly). Is there a better/proper way to do this without manually having to remove the drive every day?

HDD hibernation should occur automatically, with Trantor's 1.2 even with USB devices. But you can tweak the syno config files so that e.g. it excludes your boot stick. I did so.

    4. The perfect setup for me would be 4x3tb drives in raid10 with a hotspare in the 5.25" bay, 1-2 more ethernet ports, usb3 and maybe an ssd for caching, is that even possible? (e-sata?) the other idea I had was if you could have 4x3tb drives in raid10 and 4x1tb 2.5" drives in raid0 in the 5.25" bay and then have a raid controller and extra 1-2 ethernet ports. Can anyone give me some advice on that?

I'd suggest using a 2 or 4 bay 2.5" cage in the ODD drive, and a MOLEX Y cable to connect it. Also grab a better USB3 + SATA3 card, to connect them. RAID controller is unnecessary, it is easier if you set it up in Synology (and most definitely better managed!).

For the extra ethernet ports (I don't see the reason why would you need it though, the onboard one is Gigabit, and maybe you can add an extra gigabit interface for routing through the server, making it into a firewall), a PCI ethernet card will do, but you have to make sure it can fit the x4 port on board. I believe Intel manufactures 10Gbit dual port cards, though they are far from cheap.

    5. Give me your knowledge...if there is anything else I should know about Xpenology on the N54L? Hardware combinations, problems, scripts, packages etc.

    Cheers

    Daniel

Well I use my N54L as a multimedia and download server, and had no problem so far. WoL is unnecessary for me, so is a separate UPS unit, and such I don't use these. But what I use are:

    - Transmission

    - Sickbeard, TPB edition

    - CouchPotato

    - A nice setup of LDAP and RADIUS for wireless auth

    - Syslog server for my devices (phones, laptop, tablets, router, server itself)

    - SAMBA shares

    - Plex

    - Mailserver, VPN server, etc., that's required to access my NAS from outside the network

All these work fine together, without any problem.

  5. Re: XPEnology DS3612xs DSM 4.2 build 3211++ (repack v1.2)

As a new member of this forum, and as a XPEnology "virgin", I would like to say many thanks to Trantor, and the community, for providing this excellent piece of work

I just recently got myself a HP Proliant Microserver N54L, and after realizing that MS Server 2012 R2 will not work with the original NIC,

I tried this nice build, which "just worked" right out of the box, on a "stock" server, with original BIOS, at least all the things I have tried yet.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Seriously, it WORKS PERFECTLY. I had MSS 2012 installed, and it worked really nice, just needed the drivers downloaded from HPs website. Also, welcome to the group of ProLiant MicroServer owners

But as a newbie, I have 1 question that I have not been able to answer myself by reading the forum.

    - What can I gain, by flashing my BIOS to one of the modifed "floating" around ?

(and if I can gain something, what is it, and what BIOS should I use ?)

Many things. These modified BIOS releases usually "just" unlock hidden feature switches. Some of them are useful, e.g. enabling full speed on the ODD/eSATA ports, enabling hotswap, etc. You decide if you need it (I do, so I enabled them).

There was a really good assessment in the main Microserver thread somewhere, you should look it up. It has the link for the new BIOS, and all useful information too.

  6. Do you realize that the attempt to adapt the DSM to other systems, disassembly and removal of protection from their own (non-GPL) files this is piracy?

It's no longer just a harmless digging in the kernel/drivers. Some of them are protected so that they can not be patched directly.

Synology implements explicit protection and does not want to spread DSM. Is not it obvious?

Well given that most of those who use XPEnology releases wouldn't buy a Synology NAS any way, it cannot be counted as piracy. DSM is not sold, it is not a product - it is merely a feature, and based on what you say, it would be illegal to port iOS to other devices (I know it would never really work, but basically we are doing the same thing). So no, it is not illegal. We are making no profit out of it (except if you count personal experience, especially for those whom patch the releases, profit), and it is only used in home environment, where the other options are either (pirated) Windows, or some crappy Linux distro that does not offer even closely as much features as DSM.

  7. The amount of answers is linear to the useful info of the problem from the first post. In your case, a lot of things are missing. For example, what hardware, etc., some logs would have been nice, etc.

The reason for missing answers might also be because nobody else experienced the problem. I for one am happily using Trantor's build, PPTP VPN works fine with the LDAP server, so I have no problems with it.

I'm glad you finally came to a fix though!

it's all good, i would stick with trantors build as they seem to work out of the box.. As for the logs there wasnt much other than it wasnt reflecting the server running or attempts, whereas trantors build did.. I haven't had any issues except for plex but i think its plexs fault for not being able to index correctly thus an uninstall resolved my issues with plex (never using that product again)

I had no problems with Plex, exactly the opposite. Plex worked fine, indexing and all, but e.g. Transmission wouldn't even touch a folder not created by its user...

  8. is there a dedicated system disc? I thought the USB stick is the system-boot and all the rest is distributed across all other disks.

No, Synology uses a distributed system for disk management.

In DSM's eyes, you can have two types of main disks: initialized and uninitialized.

Initialized means that DSM created a custom partition layout on the disk, taking up some space for the OS root, swap, and tries to add a bootloader too (without success, may I add, hence the need of the boot USB). The remaining space then can be used as storage. This way the OS always survives, even if there's only one disk functioning (and initialized, not even necessarily used!).

  9. You can install Trantor's 4.2 3211 build, it works fine, needs almost no after-editing.

You should also get the modded BIOS. It helps a lot and speeds up stuff.

But I would not use Plex if I were you. Direct playback from SAMBA is a lot faster, especially for MKV. For low profile, I can get good 1080p playback on DLNA/WebPlayer with low profile MKVs, but almost nobody makes those now.

  10. copy their version to /lib/modules, restart, same issue

    Their synobios.ko is for model DS411, DS710, DS1511, DS2411, DS712.... but not for DS3612.

What is the key difference of the firmwares? What features will be missing from a 1511 build?

  12. the menu file is symlinked to the grub.conf file, which i did added the mac1 and sn flag after the boot parameter. The Mac address didn't change after the unit boots up. Some other threads mention i need a hex editor to modify the vendor file. SO i wonder if anyone of you tried, and which method works for you.

Just comment out the vender line. After that, the custom MAC address will be applied.

  13. Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that was the case. There are several business clients I have purchased Synology hardware devices but I was hoping to use a virtual version for myself.

As I said, for personal usage, playing around, etc., you can do it. Nobody's gonna stop you

You know, I would be willing to shell out $99 for an VM version if they offered that at some point. When you think about it thats actually a decent idea. However, I am sure someone has already thought of offering a VM and it was shot down for some reason, probablly licensing.

If you were wondering why a VM? The reason would be I already have invested in a hardware/storage virtualized infrastructure and could leverage those resources. Specifically VMWare ESXi and/or Hyper-V. Just a dream.

This won't happen for the exact same reason why Apple won't sell a PC-installable version of OS X. Synology mainly deals with the hardware, the software is just an "inclusive gift", to make it more appealing. If they sold the OS only, their hardware purchases would soon drop, as better hardware can be bought for lot less than they offer (for example, their cheapest x86 based device is a 2-bay NAS for 6-700USD, without hard drives. Or you can get an HP Microserver, G5-6-7, or even an 8, for half the price and double the hardware).

  14. Officially, it is not illegal, Synology is distributing the firmware packages free and open, anyone can access them. For personal use, you cannot be held accountable as you did not make profit on it, thus you did not cause a major damage to Synology (and even if you weren't able to use their OS on different hardware, you would probably not buy an actual Synology NAS, so there's no actual damage). They trade mostly in hardware, DSM is just a really nice extra per say.

However, using it in a business, or distributing your own hardware with DSM installed is against the ToS and EULA, and in that case, you risk a lawsuit from them.

So again, it is just as "bad" as making a Hackintosh, not preferred by the original manufacturer, but in reality, they won't stop you from doing so. Plus, most of the Synology-related features (DDNS, for example) do not work without a valid serial number.

  15. EDIT: Build kernel with libata-eh.c pacthed (removed the new part of code), same issue.

The problem is in rc = sata_pmp_attach(dev). This function returns -ENOENT

Where do you find this ? /etc/rc ?

It is in libata-eh, but more extended.

  16. Yes, I was looking at the same line. Seems to be a malfunction of the USB controller's driver, all the devices get the same serial, then it fails.

What kind of USB controller are you using? I presume, the motherboard's built-in one, right?

I am using motherboard's built-in one ... This is somehow broken with 4.2 (all ver.)

USB & UPS on 4.1.2668_1.3a from Trantor works.

I did try a clean install today with 4.2.3211_1.2 but without any luck.

fonix232, please tell me how can I locate this Issues ???

    If needed:

    - I can start run Ubuntu from my storage card on this machine.

    - I can put one disk inside and install 4.1.2668_1.3a again

    - on my second PC I have VM version 4.1.2668_1.3a, I can search for the file & compare it.

You could try running Ubuntu and checking for the USB devices. The driver name and version should be available somewhere, unfortunately I do not know where off the top of my head, but I believe Trantor might know the answer. Check if it works properly with Ubuntu, if it does, check driver version, then compare with 4.2. After that, the driver must be fixed to work with your controller properly. If it does not work, try another version of Ubuntu, and if that won't work either, I'd suggest contacting Asus.

  17. Yes, I was looking at the same line. Seems to be a malfunction of the USB controller's driver, all the devices get the same serial, then it fails.

What kind of USB controller are you using? I presume, the motherboard's built-in one, right?

  18. Still can not see the CPU temperature, this is a bit of trouble, because I don't know whether the CPU is overheating ...

Where exactly can't you see it? There is no dedicated CPU temperature display, but there's a system Thermal Status display that collects all the temperatures and displays the temp of the system. It is under System Information - Generic, and if you hover over the balls, it will say the temperature.

  19. Hi,

I have an old Antec housing with a good power supply and 2 old HDD ( 80Go) , so I would like to change just the mobo + CPU + ram to have a basic system ( I am not looking for a first in class one).

Just would like to reuse old hardware with a new mobo that support well the DSM

    Thanks

Well if you're already doing this, go for the HP servers. You can get an N40L around 150-200$ used, or even new today, and believe me, it will eat less, and work better, than your current PSU and case

I am quite happy with the N54L, great performance, low price, and you can basically smash 8-10-11 hard drives in this small box! Of course, with some performance giveaway (7 out of the 11 hard drives would be 2.5" only), but you can have a good rack's storage space quite easily. Cooling is also good, the hard drives make more noise than the fan itself, and it keeps quite cool.

  20. Is the DNSDSM service even relevant? I think all it does is to register the device to a (D)DNS service, and it fails the check, irrelevant to the disks inserted. Though I might be wrong.

What I think is, that the devices are dismounted because of a different check, possibly made by synobios, and it instructs the SATA controller to drop all devices.

  21. Hello,

I would like to build a cheap configuration .

Could you please recommend two or 3 mobo that are working very well with DSM 4.1 or 4.2 ?

The mobo could be available on Ebay.......

    Thanks a lot

Please be more specific, what are your requirements, what is the target system?

In generic, if you want a cheap build, I can recommend the HP N36L/N40L/N54L MicroServers, they are well priced and have really good performance.
