  1. So, just set up the new server at the new place, and ran into some problems...

The biggest being the following. I live in a student housing building, really similar to dorms except here we have separate flats. Now, all of these flats are connected to a central high-speed network, a research network for schools and research centers, etc., and the connection is solved on double stack. On IPv4 we got one address for the whole building (so no port forwarding on that), and an unlimited amount of IPv6, with completely open ports, etc.

Every flat has an assigned /64 address group, in a yyyy:yyyy:yyyy:xxxx:: format, where yyyy is the local address of the building exposed to the internet, and xxxx is the apartment number. It is all nice and good, I can access my router from the outside, etcetera, but Synology's built-in DDNS client does not seem to be able to assign an address to this separate stack. As otherwise the ports are closed, I cannot access anything from outside our own wireless, and it is quite frustrating.

Does anyone know if any of the supported DDNS options have IPv6 support? Not tunneled, this is pure IPv6 access without Teredo, or any other 6to4 crap.

  2. I haven't had any problems with USB storage before, though the whole unit is just a few days old. I've been using the port config from the N40L thread, unchanged, but it would be nice if I could disable the internal port (so I cannot disengage the boot USB by accident).

My major problem is the HP health LED, it turned pink and can't do anything about it :\

    To OP:

As it was said before, Synology installs itself to every initialized disk, so that the volumes and arrays can be removed, while the OS, with all the settings, remains intact. You could use the SSD to store the extra apps you download, by setting up a simple volume on it, ensuring that all of them can load fast. As far as I know, Synology loads the OS from the first disk it detects, so an SSD could only help with that if you could either put it on the first port (Slot #1 on the 4-bay area), or modify the BIOS to detect your given port as the first.

  3. Trantor ...

I know that is not the right time, because you're busy with a new release ... but

With each new updated version, for which we are very grateful, we all need to :

    - install IPKG & some basic packages (usbutils, ... )

    - enable Apache log (/usr/syno/apache/conf/httpd.conf-sys)

    - activate WOL (wake on lan) > http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=665&hilit=wake

    - 6 disk is recognized as an eSATA drive

    - etc ...

Is it possible that the new version already contain all these things ???

    Regards.

IPKG would definitely come handy, but I disagree with the other options.

Many don't want Apache logging. For example, my server is running perfectly now, so no need for extra processes taking computing power from transcoding.

WOL fucks up my BIOS in a major way. It might not apply to you, but many motherboards get their CMOS scrambled once you enable any kind of BIOS editing inside Synology.

Disk recognition is also a per-device setting. You have to figure out which port is what, and edit synoinfo according to the results. Maybe your ports would match a few computers, but it would just cause further problems to us.

So, yes, IPKG can be included, but all the other options are personal preferences that many don't want to have in their initial install.

    To build 4.3 I use:

    - OS : Dedian 7 on VMware worstation 9

    - Tool Chains (DSM 4.3 ) / Intel x86 Linux 3.2.40 (Bromolow) x64

    - Kernel source from Synology GPL / 3776branch (synogpl-3776-bromolow.tbz) with patch from andy's git

At the moment 4.3 kernel/modules compil fine, DSM 4.3 installed okay, but says that abnormal error occured and unmount all volumes....

After that no disk/volume are shows in storage manager

Does this happen during the initial boot with empty drives, or after you initialized all of them? If latter, I think it might be a collision in the SATA driver, maybe the one for your controller is misbehaving. Please post exact log messages (screenshot via phone/camera is fine), and we can run a diff on the storage drivers source code to find the problem.

  4. Don't you think it's a bit early to demand a release?

The sources were released just today, alongside with the actual update. Our developers need time to check the differences, and make sure everything works fine before releasing anything. It takes time, most probably a few days. So sit back, relax, and wait until someone posts their release. Asking in a thousand new topics won't make it happen faster, but it is a perfect way to annoy the developers, and everyone else.

  5. So, Trantor, no rush, but when can we expect a 4.3 build?

Okay, no joking with it, I know what a pressure it can be when a whole community waits on you to do something "magic". Take your time, and make sure everything's working fine

Just a slight request, but could you add the HP N36L/N40L/N54L drivers to the default kernel?

    - AMD Turion II CPU

    - NC107i NIC

    - AMD RS785E/SB820M (BIOS reports SB600)

    - AMD HD4200 VGA

    Further info here:

    http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Base_Hardware_N54L

  6. The problem is definitely the PCI card. Synology by default does not include extra hardware drivers, and most of the XPEnology releases have only specific drivers, so check your card, check for its chipset, and make a request in the thread of your release.

  7. I don't think it is possible, at least not without a lot of hacking around.

The USB image uses GRUB, with a specific partition layout that a disk cannot reproduce. The only occasion I witnessed a multi-partition CD was a long time ago, and on an Apple computer (I would rather not say Mac, as it was waaaaay before the actual Mac era). Back then Apple's OS detected the disks as SCSI devices, and such, it was possible to write two or more partitions on them. But it did not really work with Windows or Linux unfortunately.

  8. I have found...............................

My default password contain a "ç", I have change password for a simple like "azerty" and all is fine, SSH work...

    Why I can't put french caracters like "ç", "é", "è",... ?

It is probably the encoding of the SSH channel you are using. It is always suggested to only use ASCII characters, without the Unicode extension.

  9. There is a tutorial of setting it up IF the kernel has the module required. I highly doubt that even our modified kernels have it, so recompile the 2668++ kernel source with the original config, but change the following option:

    CONFIG_VIDEO_CX23885

to m (it should not be set by default)

After this, get the cx23885.ko module, copy it to /lib/modules/whateverkernelpathitis/ and modprobe it. In theory it should work, to the part where you need the firmwares to start the device.

    So, read this tutorial: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/H ... V-HVR-1700

    Hopefully it is helpful enough!

  10. I need a central file storage which has some usefull mobile apps, i searched for the third party apps for windows to support os x specific services but the solution i found was not useful. every function that i was looking for is integrated in dsm, so i would really like to use this software.

I installed everything did the hdd setup and tried every function and its working without any problems, except for the dvb-s card, maybe someone has the drivers for it..

if so please share it with us

The DSM Mobile apps are everything but useful. Okay, maybe the Gallery and Music Player apps are okay, but the others lack functionality.

Also you are still not specific. What OS X specific services? Because I'm pretty sure OS X has support for most of the Win solutions, as most of the companies use Microsoft Server (including my school, and everything works for Mac users, even remote printing via a Microsoft Server).

  11. First of all, sort out your needs. What do you want to use the server for? From these, what are the features that do not work well on a Windows Server with OS X? Can you get those features via a third-party app to support Mac?

If you can get those features without Synology, I suggest you go for it. Main problem is, that you have specific hardware, that needs specific drivers. Most probably this is the reason why your DVB card is not detected, and adding a driver to the OS is not the easiest thing.

I for one would hate to say that you have to go back to Windows, as their server solutions mostly target corporations with a skilled IT team to work with the system. I had the chance to try Server 2012 Essentials, and while setting up my domain stuff (ActiveDirectory, RADIUS, e-mail server, and a simple web server with PHP and SQL) took about 10-15 minutes, or maybe half an hour the first time on Synology software, it took me almost two hours on Windows, not to mention the countless reboots because of updates, activated services, etc.

But if you really cannot live on Windows, and your card cannot be supported by the Synology kernel, there are a few more really good NAS-oriented Linux distros. One of them that I can suggest is OpenMediaVault. It is still in beta, regularly updated, has a lot of extra packages, plus Debian-based, meaning you can easily find apps and install them. Of course they won't have a web UI unless defined otherwise, and you cannot control them from the web interface, but it is a lot more open than Synology's solution.

  12. I get no SSH connections at all (though the port is forwarded), but what I get is daily 5-10 failed login. I use a free dynamic DNS solution (might be the cause), plus most of the ports are forwarded (too lazy to set up a proper VPN, plus current internet is SLOOOOOOW).

Apart from this, no irregular behavior, nothing extra. Though ONCE I got hacked, when accidentally reset the admin password to admin (for about two days). All that happened was that some chinese downloaded soap operas and stuff like that, of course in chinese. Removed them, changed the password, no problem since.

  13. I have the same problem, the issue is that DSM, as it is a strictly closed-line product of Synology, expects the BIOS to be in a specific format it can edit (and not the AMI BIOS HP uses in my case, my hackology server that is made of a HP M8000n, Asus motherboard, etc.). Now, this invalidates the CMOS, wipes all the changes (I for one need them, as I boot from USB, and primary boot device on this board is a Floppy device set even though there isn't on connected, and fails to go through all the devices to find the USB drive), and you're left with an unusable CMOS config that gets reset every time you restart.

Unfortunately this service runs real-time, so no matter what you do, power-off via pulling the plug, shutdown via terminal or GUI, the CMOS gets written and thus invalidated.

Now, so far I found only two solutions to counter this:

    1. If you have a CMOS read-only pin, put a jumper on that madafaka. This should protect it from Synology's stupid CMOS-overriding daemon.

    2. If you are good with it, try to modify your BIOS, hack around some default values, and set it up for your taste. I only recommend this to those who know EXACTLY what they are doing!

Another solution would be that someone finds the service that modifies the BIOS, and eliminates it. But I fear that this service might be embedded into many others and would possibly be bad to disable all of them.

  14. I own a NAS DeLuxe NDL2700ST (Basically a Thecus N7700Pro NAS) but I was really not satisfied with the firmware they developped.

This NAS is like Synology basic hardware:

    Intel Core2Duo 7400

    3Gb memory

    Marvell 88SE64xx raid controller

    Intel 1Gb nics

    7x2Tb SATA disks

So I had tried several other NAS OS-es like freeNAS, openmediavault even Windows Storage Server (which at least was able to do the baisc functions I need it for (backup, iCIFS, SCSI and NFS) but it lacked performance (duh). Besides the NAS DeLux I own a RS3413xs+ which I like a lot, not only performance wise but OS like as well. So I tried to load this image on the NAS delux and to my supprise it runs smoothly. The only thing I hope for is an upgrade to DSM 4.2 with the smae drivers as in this firmware, so any plans on releasing a 4.2 build 3211++ ?

    grtx Johan

Any one can help me to install DSM on TheCus N7000pro ?

How to boot from usb on a system with no keyboard/video ports ?

Maybe with a serial console session ?

It has a PCIex8 port, so simply jam a cheap PCIe video card in there (any cheapo will do), and use a USB keyboard (or a USBtoPS2 converter). Then you can see what the problem is.

  15. Why when I try 4.2 only stay in the kernel booting screen , and it doesnt happen with 4.1?

4.1 work great but 4.2 stay in that screen

    thanks

The kernel does not contain drivers for some of your motherboard parts (most probably south- or northbridge controller is missing). Either use 4.1 or compile a 4.2 kernel with your specs enabled.

  16. I have try it virtualy & it is the same thing (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34829066/Readynas/virtualy.jpg

If network card works, I can use Assistant & creat admin`s password, wich also work later in SSH.

So, without network, my road is closed.

Is there any option to compile the build again, which will have this network supported file inside ????

Re: Netgear ReadyNAS PRO series ???

    by mattyshack » 04 Jun 2013 16:27

Adding a network card is not the best or easiest solution. DSM does not have the required Ethernet driver for the x86 NetGear NAS. The ReadyNAS Pro 6 requires the Marvell kernel module [sky2.ko] be loaded for the Ethernet ports to work - not sure about other Pro models. The sky2.ko module needs to be added to the boot files [rd.gz]. Then the kernel must be told to specifically load sky2.ko because it was not compiled directly into the kernel [aka zImage].

I will try to create another image that forces the loading of the module, but otherwise I can't do anything else, it even puzzles me why it is not loaded by default.
