I am hopping hear are my final specs for my server. I will be running Esxi.
3U Server Case w/ 16x 3.5
LSI SAS 9211-8I 6GBPS 8PORT X2
Supermicro X9drl-e
Intel Xeon E5-2670v1 x2
Samsung 32GB 4X8GB DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10600R ECC REG Registered Server Ram
From the what I have read this should handle plex very well. With some transcoding. Any thoughts

1240LV3 does not support dual CPU configuration.
Thanks for the info. I have changed the cpu two Xeon e7 4830. I have also got a price for the add on sas card from gigabyte which is £82 so I think the board is a go.
-
what do we think of this.
2x Intel Xeon E3-1240L
Gigabyte MD30-RS0
2x 8GB Crucial DDR4

Cheers for the info. Given me lots to think about. I am also doing this discussion on the plex forum and they seem to think the cpu X5670 is to old to be any good. Is that correct??

If you buy a powerhouse, I'd recommend not directly installing Synology - rather use a hypervisor and emulate XPEnology, alongside with other OS's. That way you can have access to raw power of the machine, while keeping your Synology up and running
Ok sorry for the stupid question but what do u mean hypervisor??

Found this HP ProLiant DL380 G6 with x2 Xeon x5670 and 16gb ram
but i noticed the raid card 410i doesn't work with xpenology

I am think of using a dual cpu board so do u think this board would work
supermicro X10DAL-i
So as the title says I am looking to replace my server. Can spend around £800 maybe more. Looking for 6+ sata and must be powerful enough to cope with 4-6 streams at once.Pre-built or you build with parts?
Check eBay to see if the guy from Japan is still selling engineering samples of Xeon V3 processors. I bought a 2630LV3 about 4 months back for $199 US from this person. They are legit.
seller:icomputer_parts_international
I use that with a SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRI-F. Works good, 10 Sata ports all Intel.
Note: Xpenology can only use 8 cores. So on the 2630Lv3 I have hypertheading disabled so I only use the 8 real cores. My setup is baremetal, plex is really the only thing that takes processor power on my setup.

well i am now all back up and running. i have one questions>>>
1. can i upgrade to 5 without loosing my data
-
I have a way to get my data back and get my server working, will post in a few days a full walk through. The short version is pull all the hard drives out apart from one u are happy to wipe, reinstall the os so the server will boot fully. Then use Linux to get ur data back and put onto the hd u pulled out of ur server

No offense but if you're not on the latest version and you keep your box on the internet, hacking like this is gonna happen all the time and you're kinda' asking for it.
No offence taken mate, I know it's pretty much my own fault for not updating, just pissed off more than anything and the fact when I first posted this no one on the internet had posted anything

Do you know anything about recent OpenSSL bug ?
Vulnerability is described here - http://heartbleed.com/ .
You can test your nas hare - https://filippo.io/Heartbleed/ .
It was fixed in updates for 4.3 and 5.0.
Yes I heard of it, but didn't apply the update. What version is safe and has the update already done
-
Which version of xpenology do you have (4.2/4.3/5.0, any updates) ?
I am on 4.3 with no updates

i just tired t log into my server and this came up (See attachment) any ideas??? i can't be the first person this has ever happened to
Is your DSM "visible" from the Internet? If it's not, then it's worrying.
Yes I use remote acces on it think this could be a start of a very big problem. I am going to try a restore of the os in a bit. Will report back when I know more
-
Thanks for the reply, looks like is very new. I am going to try something this evening. But I won't be paying for the ransom
-
EDIT by Trantor:
Based on our current observations, this issue only affects Synology NAS servers running some older versions of DSM (DSM 4.3-3810 or earlier), by exploiting a security vulnerability that was fixed and patched in December, 2013. At present, we have not observed this vulnerability in DSM 5.0.
For users who have not encountered any of the symptoms stated above, we highly recommend downloading and installing DSM 5.0, or any version below:
-For DSM 4.3, please install DSM 4.3-3827 or later
-For DSM 4.1 or DSM 4.2, please install DSM 4.2-3243 or later
-For DSM 4.0, please install DSM 4.0-2259 or later

Thanks for the reply. I can change the the raid card. Tbh I think it will be an Esxi build as the CPUs are 8 core and 16 threads each. So can u suggest a road card that will play well with Esxi??
