was wondering if you ever got the second nic to work also? No, but I haven't really tried to be honest. It is not a feature I need.

- Outcome of the update: SUCCESSFUL
- DSM version prior to update: DSM 6.2.1-23824 update 6
- Loader version and model: Jun v1.04b - DS918+
- Using custom extra.lzma: NO
- Installation type: BAREMETAL - Asrock H370M-ITX/ac - i5-8400
Additional Notes: Reboot required after update. I never used the second NIC -so haven't tested it.

Have you looked at this?
You might have to change a few things in your BIOS depending on the hardware you use.
I haven't had much luck with generated serials, I would suggest you try getting it working with only changing the VID/PID until it boots. If my memory serves me right, the serial/mac is only important, if you need to use hardware decoding.
-
I didn't really do much. I use the 1.04b image, change VID/PID and the serial number/mac address from a real Synology device. I am not sure if serial and mac address is necessary.
I think that was it.

Hey,
I’ve a question regarding to your config. I use a MoBo Z390M with a Intel NIC I219V ( is the same like on your mobo ). But I can’t find my NIC over find.synology.com. I’ve used for the installation a USB 3.0 on a USB 3.0 port. But I am not sure if this is the main problem. Have you use a the custom ram disk for the installation?
Best regards
I am using a USB2.0 stick, which is plugged in to a USB3.0 port.
I haven't done anything special, except changing the S/N, VID/PID in the cfg.I had problems with one of my USB sticks, so you could try another USB stick, and see if that helps..
-
I never got both NICs working. I am not entirely sure how to do, but I tried adding a second MAC to the cfg file, but that wasn't enough.
As I don't really need the feature, I haven't tried more than that.

I have had a a couple of IPs blocked in my DSM within the last couple of hours, so I was looking into additional security in DSM, and stumpled upon 2-step verification. I use 2FA in other places, so adding it to DSM as well seems like a good idea.
The question is, does this feature rely on Synologys server sending out emails or generate the initial code to use in the authentication app?
In other words, does this work with XPEnology?

What happens if you boot without Disk 1?
You may try to use your "old disk 4" to replace the faulty disk 1,
to see if it makes any difference in regards to your boot problem.
If I boot without disk 1, then it boots as it should.
Then I tried switching the disk 1 (new) and disk 2, so I have the new empty drive in disk 2, and disk 2 is in disk 1 slot now. Then it booted without problems, and it is now rebuilding the array.

What type of pool/raid are you using?
I am running SHR with BTRFS.
I will try the other things when I get back home.

My XPEnology is/was running with:
Disk 1: 2 TB
Disk 2: 6 TB
Disk 3: 6 TB
Disk 4: 2 TB
I was having bad sectors on one of the older 2TB drives, so I am gonna replace them. First I shut down the server, and replaced disk 4 with another drive.
DSM came up with a "degraded" storage pool, just as expected. I added the new drive to storage pool and repaired it. Everything looks good. Now running with a 2TB drive in disk 1, and the rest is 6TB drives.
This morning I was trying to replace disk 1 following the same procedure.
After replacing the drives, DSM never came up again. Synology Assistant found the NAS, but didn't recognize that any existing DSM was installed.
I didn't have time to reinstall the old drive, but I assume that it will boot up as usual when that is done.
How do I replace disk 1?

I have just tried installing 918+, and with a SN and mac adress from a real Synology, I am able to do offline transcoding in DS Video.
When I do play something that hasn't been transcoded (offline) on my iphone or in a browser, then the CPU usage goes up by 20%, so I am not sure that HW transcoding actually works properly.

I am in the process of doing this today.
I will post my findings after the process is complete.
I did it a few days ago. I tested that I had a configuration that worked using a spare disk. Then I installed all the drives from my Synology, and I got the option to migrate. I did that, and it worked.

By the way, does it work both network connectors of your motherboard?
No, not out of the box anyway. The build is quite new, so I haven't had time to test everything yet.
Do you know, if I need to change anything in the grub.cfg to get the second NIC working?

Hey Joe,
Why not to use the 918+ version in order to get the hardware transconding with the 1.04b loader? The problem with 3617xs is not having that...
Cheers
Someone mentioned in another thread of mine, that it could be a pain to get hw transcoding working, and that the CPU had enough resources to do the transcoding anyway.
I haven't been able to figure out what other differences there where between the 918+ and the 3617xs - or are there no differences?
-
It also looks like the hard drives power consumption is higher than you mentioned:
https://www.seagate.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/ironwolf-14tb-DS1904-10-1807GB-en_GB.pdf
The 6TB IronWolf uses 7.2w which idle. I have two of them, and a third one on the way.

I just googled a bit and found a link there they say 22w with i7 cpu. Wonder where other 15w come from for you.
https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/h370-b360-budget-coffee-lake-motherboard-roundup,review-34282-6.html
If I read this correctly, then they use an i3-8350K?
I guess some of the higher comsumption in my system could be from a PSU that is inefficient?
-
It is also a bit more than I was hoping for, perhaps I can tweak the power consumption a bit by undervolting the cpu.
I will also start using the "Power Schedule" feature, or try and get WOL working.
On the positive side, the new system has so much more CPU, that I can consolidate my "servers". I have two Raspberry Pi's running 24/7, those services can now be run in Docker. I also pay for a VPS hosted in the cloud, which I no longer need.

Wow.. 4 drives and it eats up 53W/h. If each drive is 4w. The system itself needs 37W while doing nothing... unexpected
How low did you think it would go?

What is the power co sumption of your setup?
My power-consumption-meter says 53W after boot with all drives spinning.

I just wanted to add a brief comment about my build, to let others know that this combination of hardware works.
CPU: i5-8400
MB: Asrock H370M-ITX/ac
Memory: 8 GB G.Skill Aegis 2666 mhz
Disk: 2x 6TB Ironwolf + 2x 2TB Samsung/WD.
USB drive: Kingston SE9 8GB
Loader: Jun's 1.03b DS3617xs with DSM 6.2.1.23824 update 1.
It's running bare metal.
Everything in the BIOS is default, except that I changed the boot order to legacy USB (not UEFI).
In the DSM, I only have one NIC available, but I haven't tried getting the other one working.
I have tried using all 6 SATA slots, and they all work.
No issues at all. I have tried migrating from another NAS as well, and that worked.
Let me know, if you have any questions.

I am a bit confused about the different loaders, is there any difference between DS918+, DS3615xs and DS3617xs?
Is there different functionality, or is it just a question of selecting the version that works with my hardware?
-
I'm afraid I don't have the option of doing a backup, as I don't have enough space anywhere else. I will however tale a backup of most vital data.
When I just add the disk to the new box, it will just detect the old build and "upgrade" the DSM to the new hardware?
I'm gonna be using it mainly for storage of movies and running Emby and Synology Drive. I will also be running a few containers in docker, and I was thinking always on.

Hi guys.
I decided to pull the trigger, and build a new XPEnology server., as my old DS411+II is starting to feel old and dated.
My new build will be a bare metal DSM with i5-8400, 8GB memory and Asrock H370M-ITX/ac motherboard. The hardware should arrive in the next few days.
I want to use the same drives in the new build, and keep my data.
Currently I have 2x 6TB + 2x 2TB in a SHR configuration. The old NAS is running DSM 6.2.1-23824 Update 1.
I guessing the new build need to run at least the same version of the DSM as the old NAS?
I'm thinking about running the 3617xs loader, but I am not sure which version I should use. I saw someone mention Jun's 1.04b, but in this list, 1.03b is the latest version.
The new build will be tested with a spare disk, and when I know how to configure everything, then I will want to move the old drives to the new build, but how should I do it?
As mentioned earlier, I run SHR on the old system, but SHR is not enabled be default as far as I know in 3617xs?
Any tips on how to proceed is much appreciated.

Thank you for the very good answer above.
I haven't purchased any hardware just yet, as I am still looking for a case that fits in my IKEA Kallax shelf unit.
Regarding the motherboard, is there anything else than the chipset and NIC that I should be aware of?
I'm considering switching to mITX, and found the Asrock H370M-ITX/ac, which has the Intel H360 chipset, dual Intel gigabit NIC and 6 sata ports. Would that be suitable for a XPEnology build?
ConBee II USB device not showing up in /dev/ttyUSB0

I just purchased a ConBee II USB Zigbee gateway, which I want to use in Home-Assistant, which I run in Docker.
When I connect it to the Xpenology server, it shows up in lsusb, but doesn't get assigned to /dev/ttyUSB0.
lsusb

I ran the following commands to load the drivers
sudo insmod /lib/modules/usbserial.ko sudo insmod /lib/modules/ftdi_sio.ko
When I connect the Conbee II, this is shown in dmesg
