Maybe wasn't seated/connected fully?  I'd try again in any case.  "Crashed" means different things depending on where in Storage Manager it is displayed.  You might try posting a screenshot if it persists.

was checked... also, before i tried to "add" the disk by clicking repair" via think it was "manage" and then selecting this disk 4" I did a health check on the disk... the one that takes just over a minute, which I'd assume does more than just is there power on the disk.

when I google it spoke about clicking storage manager and selecting the volume and then "add" but could not find this, was this a old version feature, or is this a feature that only shows if some criteria is passed.

Will have to figure out how I will zero the disk now. and then retry, but I really don't like opening/closing this NAS as my entire house runs off it.

  2. No.

to be totally accurate, drive was in case, but not connected, never used... straight out of the anti static rapping, placed it in case as it was the safest place to keep it, but never powered on.

I also don't have any other machine to connect it to. house of MAC Book Pro's and iPad's.

  3. Hi Hi all.

I've had the same drive go into "faulty" state a couple of times now (every time a repair worked perfectly and brought it back to healthy state), decided as I have a spare drive, of the exact same make/model (and the repeated problem), I'm going to swop the drive out.

I did the swop, when the NAS was back up it showed the drive... in a Not Intialized state, I hit repair, and well 2 seconds latter it went into a crashed state.

Although when I click on Health Info on the drive it comes back perfect.

So #1 I'd like to remove the drive from the Volume Group first and then Re-add it back.

  4. Hi guys

The last 2/3 days I've found my NAS shut down a couple of times, make that every 12/18 hours it's shut down.

At the moment it has a scheduled shut down at night at 22:00 and then come back to life at 06:45. and thats working stable.

DSM 6.1.7-15284 - ye it's old, but when 6.2 came out there was to many warnings, and be careful's f this and that... that I decided to leave well enough alone.

I'm not seeing/having any errors reported, that I can see. Need some assistance trying to diagnose whats going on as alllll my movie, documents, pictures photos music, it's all on here and can't afford this monster to crash.

    please guide me.

  5. so configured the auto power off and power on, and initially did not see a change in my house power graphs... thought damm it did not work, circuit is still drawing 250watt... with some deeper digging discovered usage on circuit dropped from 250watt -> 190watt, so all that's left on there is my Edge router, my Unifi USG and a 24 port 1G TP-Link switch.

bummer, if this was my NAS it was so much easier, with it being one of these others it def complicates things.

  6. Hi guys

Every evening my station is used up to about 21:30... at which point veryone goes to bed, next use might be early morning, otherwise only at about 16:00 again, have noticed my NAS constantly uses 200watt and well this is a serious punch when we're running of the solar panels or even in the evening after everyone has gone to beed and the house runs of the Inverter Batteries.

Is there any way Xpenology can spin the drives down, using Ironwolf drives.

hmm IG-88, looking at your response... I'm thinking it is actually better to wait at the moment still, this is my primary media storage and document/photos and music, not going to take a chance.

Can I suggest that when it is in a better state that a dedicated upgrade thread be created.

basically there is no difference when configuring 1.03 loader and installing dsm, mod grub.cfg as in the dsm 6.1 tutorial

there is also a extra.lzma for 1.03 and at the bottom of the 1st post there are some comments about differences that might later end up in the tutorial for 1.03/dsm 6.2

there is a reason why there is no "official" tutorial, its still experimental and some drivers will not work, also there is only one modell (918+) supported so every update is a migration to a new model and you might loose plugins as there is no support on the new system and you cant reinstall them

best way of trying is to have a separate usb flash drive with 1.03 loader and a empty separate disk and disconnecting 1.02 loader usb and all dsm 6.1 disks, that way you can find out whats working (hardware, plugins), if you are done testing you can remove usb and the single disk, reconnect the old usb and disks and have gained the information you need what might happen if you use 918+ dsm 6.2

you can read about some of the problems here

then stay off 1.03a2 and dsm 6.2, its for testing and finding out whats working and whats not, if there is a feature in 6.2/918+ you really need and its working then it might be a option (like m.2 ssd or hardware transcoding - if its working for your hardware and you get it working)

i guess after there is more then 918+ image support for 1.03 it might be a time to think about having a look again

  8. Hi all,

I'm looking but not seeing ("ye calling myself idiot here" ) the guide on what/how to upgrade from 6.1 to 6.2 and what I understands also then requires a Loader upgrade from 1.02 -> 1.03,

Can anyone point me to the how to, where's the document, tried posting in tutorial, but post is not getting approved so trying here.

seriously don't want to brick my system,

  9. ... I'm back...

Problem was with the MB Bios going into a I don'\t like something, tell me what to do freeze, once I got past that then the loader kicked in launching me to DSM 6.1.7-15284

    we can close this thread

  10. Ok, Got a problem.

Downloaded the update (as my NAS said was available) and just applied (did not make note of the update number), It's gone, can't find the NAS using Sonology manager...

    What do I do ?

most 4k will work with 100Mbit i guess but no warranty as if its "raw" ultra hd bluray it might not work as the standard allows >100Mbit (on paper)

but i guess most 4k's will have been recompensed and will be much smaller then raw and streams most like are always <100Mbit even in "raw" as they come from netflix or amazon, how many customers will have a >100mbit internet connection?

i'd would use the 100mbit cat5 for the tv's, its more like to work then wifi shared with a lot of unpredictable clients around

some problems can occur because of protocol/overhead so beside streaming you can try nfs and smb/cifs (but i guess smb/cifs will be terrible)

Thinking I have 1 point I have to rewire to 1Gb, my WifiAP point to my switch, which is 100Mbit atm,

probably leave the others at 100Mbit for now

I'm not worried about streaming from outside my network, it's the inside from my Media server thats taxing the network.

  12. Problem is Cat 5 and cat5E. some of this is not to long runs. and I got conduit in the walls. mostly labour and some swearing needed.

My original design for for as much as possible to use WiFi and only when I need high bandwidth to hard wire into the router... and now discovered that my hard wire points are running slower than what my Wifi CAN... if it was hardwired at 1Gb instead of the current 100Mb.

  13. so summarising 2 parts here, changing the MAC address and the Synology S/N after install have no negative impact.

I'm still using (going to use to lab things before doing it on the bare metal build) my VM with the default MAC, so need to change this one so that it does not conflict with my Bare metal build now.

Do I have to change the S/N? or can I leave it as is in the supplied synoboot.img

We don't control how MEGA arranges their directories structure.

I strongly suggest you use v1.02b. It is as simple a re-imaging your usb and updating the grub file accordingly and adding the custom extra ramdisk if you already had it. Plug back. Done.

did not use a custom ramdisk, only changed the pid and vid so assume thats all I have to do again with a new usb/loader.

do we have a HowTo thread that covers this ?

  16. Current build/last night:

DS3615xs 6.1 Jun's Mod V1.02-alpha + DSM_DS3615xs_15254.pat (DO NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS, sure I remember downloading the b loader, but now see the alpa version in download directory, from where I would have used it)

Thinking I should #!upgrade to the V1.02-b loader or wait for the quicknic loader as I'm going to need it anyhow due to HDD count.

v1.02b. I think the OP is clear on that matter and the numbering suggests it is the latest.

    v1.02a (a for alpha) precedes v1.02b (b for beta)

So confirming, (yes because was not 100% clear for me (because If I look at xpenology.com/download) and i'm trying to clarify v.1.02b is the current loader.

which I can download from https://mega.nz/#F!yQpw0YTI!DQqIzUCG2RbBtQ6YieScWg!DYRAXCpB

I would have expected the expenology/download link to first / top most link/list the newest loader and DSM.

    will open a upgrade question.

  18. bit confused re the boot loader.

    https://mega.nz/#F!yQpw0YTI!DQqIzUCG2RbBtQ6YieScWg!DYRAXCpB lists a 1.02b for DSM 6.1

But then everywhere else I see 1.02alpha. (listed: https://xpenology.club/downloads/)

So which is it, whats the most recent / suggested loader,

2nd part to this question, whats involved in upgrading the loader, this is important in the context of quicknic's loader imminent as I've build my environment and will need to do this soon.

  19. Hi

My Internet speed is less than the speed required for streaming. so even if I get line speed/internet, it still won't push the local speed capable, and potentially needed for HD and 4K streaming inside the house.

Current NAS (with PLEX) is 1GbE to switch (TPLink TL-SG1024D),

New XPenology (with PLEX to be) is 1GbE to switch

Apple TV (with PLEX Client) is 100Mb (hardwired) to switch - With TV direct connected

2nd TV (with PLEX Client) is 100Mb (hardwired) to switch

    2 x iPad's + 2 Laptops all connected via 5ghz to Wifi AP  (TP Link Archer C7 AC1750)

    1 x General computer - 1Gb connected to switch

    1 x Macbook Pro - 5ghz connected to AP.

    various other computers devices still.

Router runs separate on a Draytek Vigor2760

for hd/bluray you should use 5ghz wifi, single stream 2.4 ghz is usualy (newer iterations) max 75 Mbit, even with 1-2 meter line of sight i never got hd/bluray (40mbit) reliable working, the ususal rule might be calculate with half what the wifi speed is promising, so with 5GHz thats 150Mbit (single stream) so there should be about 70-80 Mbit usable bandwidth for video

a 1gbit connection of the ap to the lan would be better but i guess 100mbit will do as long as there is nothing else on that 100mbit connection so you realy get the full 100mbit speed for your wifi ap and for the video

and here in "1gbit connection of the ap to the lan would be better but i guess 100mbit will do as long as there is nothing else on that 100mbit connection so you realy get the full 100mbit speed for your wifi ap and for the video" lies my problem, I have 2 large screen 4K TV's, I have at least 2 iPad's also streaming, and then at the same time I'm busy over the same WiFi network. Thus my suspicion that at times when my PLEX is battling it might actually not be the PLEX, it might be the PLEX having to consider transcoding to lower resolution (for which it does not have the power) because of available bandwidth.

with a 70-80Mbit needed per stream it implies I don't need to change the hard wired points as each of them won't kill the 100Mb available.

Hopefully with the new XPEnology I'll have the CPU to transcode, step 1 and then step 2 being the fixing of the cabling where needed.

dont forget to take into account the performance of the client device, all streaming data is buffered to a degree and if the client can't handle the stream, network retries, buffering you might get stuttering. With wifi, also take into account distance to devices and topology, walls etc, real world you wont get anywhere near 100Mb. you could do some tests to see if you can see the difference between stream qualities, recode your library to bit rates/resolution that looks good on the screens you have.

    All understood :)

The proximity of the 5 devices are well within a good distance to get full speed from the WiFi AP.

At the moment if each device pushes their ability then I'm bottle necking on the AP as it's 100Mb/s connected to my central switch, the switch is 1Gb connected to the NAS.\All ym Hardwired points are currently 100Mbps connected.

Was curious what the band width required was for HD so that I can add them together and see where I'm possibly bottle necking.
