Looks like I might have to re-create my USB's before my XPenology build later this week, after I get my MB replacement.

in vm config goto serial port, enable com1, modus host-pipe, uncheck connect with host/pipe and for path on windows have this "\\.\pipe\ds3615" (ds3615 is just a string you choose for each vm differently as you can have more then one vm using this)
in putty you select serial instead of the usual ssh or telnet, where the ip/host is (now named "serial line") comes the pipe you defined in the vm "\\.\pipe\ds3615" and speed is 115200, after starting the vm the pipe is available and you can connect with putty
Not to figure out how to do the putty component on a MAC using the terminal program

that was last year and for dsm 6.0 (i still have the last version but never used it, after some testing i migrated from 5.0 to 6.1)
there will be a new one for 6.1
and?
thats your actual problem? what hardware?
if its old and not uefi you will have to use the mbr version of the loader
Any idea if quick nick will be releasing his loader (ETA) for DSM 6.1,
The previous loader he had available got removed from the thread.

a typo, you write, was not wanting to say boot, was suppose to say mount.
And btw never said i was gonna use this for work, I just said I had a bad day at work, got home and to chill started building the NAS, and in the process bend some of the CPU pins, thats why I haven't tried the USB's yet.

... got the sticks.... step #1
step #2, build the machine... and this is where my Black Friday comes into, bad day at work, then build machine to improve it, ended with bend CPU pins, so now need to go and get a new MotherBoard before I can proceed, will advise.
ok... as for the booting thing, it was a auto mount issue on my MAC, none of them wanted auto boot, I manually mounted the slice1 and then edited the files.

Thanks.
Prepared 3 usb's. ranging from a 128Mb unit all the way up to 4GB (a bit of a waste).
I saw threads re quicknick boot loader, but it seems he removed it

hi guys
Is this modification for the grub still required.
I've burned the synoboot.img now onto 2 USB's. a 256Mb (windows machine using Win32Disk Imager) and a 4G (MAC using Apple Pi Baker),
And on both once the image is burned I now have what looks like 3 partitions, but neither wants to boot, so can't modify the files.
Wondering if the gub.conf file edit is maybe not a older boot loader steps.... / Hoping.

Please check my logic...
I'm thinking of leaving package installs on the default volume (spread/stripped/mirrored over all the HDD's), my reason, volume1 that will be on the M.2 SSD will not be protected (single M2.D), I don't mind loosing PLEX cached data, the media meta data, should something go wrong, that can be rebuild,
I'd rather put the app installs on the 4GB slice on the beginning of all drives, that way even if a drive fails my package installs (+configs) are safe.

I Polanskiman
I would assume, apparently wrong, that the default DSM install location would have counted as a volume (or default install location) and then my /volume1 as a 2nd selectable destination.
Will modify my VM a bit and see it at work.

Open Package Center, Settings. There is a drop down which allows you to choose the default volume.
Must be one of those days for me, but not seeing/finding it, which tab ?

Polanskiman.
I just clicked on a random package to install it, it went straight into installing it, not asking where to install it, is there a default that I change some where to change the default install location?
thanks

Hi all
In the following, now closed thread:
references made of connecting to a serial port to see more output etc instead of just Kernal booting.
How is this done on Virtualbox. Been using ssh for year, but always onto ssh, can't remember when last I connected to a serial interface.

Hi all
Where in DSM can I go to mount a NFS/CIFS/SAMBA volume owned/hosted on another NAS.
To assist in copying data from current NAS to new XPenology.

Hi there, I've setted up a DS3615xs with DSM 6.0.2-8451 with 1.0.1 Loader
I would like to change to DS915 with 1.0.2b loader what have i to do?
Is there any way to do this change without losing data?
Just curious... why change from DS915 -> DS3615xs,

Hi all
figured I should probably also post here as I've posted and chatted to some of the guys in other threads.
George here, from alberton in South Africa.
Using a NetGear ReadyNAS 102 at the moment, as a document/mp3 and Plex Media server.
In the process (placed the last parts order this morning) to build a XPenology, onto which all my various external drives data will be copied, including all the data residing on the ReadyNAS at the moment. Hopefully be done some time next week.
CPU: Intel i5 7400
MB: Gigabyte+GA-B250M-D3H
RAM: 16GB RAM DDR4
SSD: 1 x 128GB M.2 SSD as a /volume1 for Package installs and as a Plex cache location.
HDD: 6 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf HDD's configured with SHR/BTRFS /volume2
PSU: corsair-rmx-cp-9020090-550w
USB: 3216-adata-dashdrive-uv150-32gb-usb30-black (nice USB3 stick to go into a USB 3.0 port)
Current case: 1871-cooler-master-n400-midi-tower-black-atx
Going into a cheap M-ATX case for now, capable of handling the 6 x 3.5 inch drives, will be rebuild into a Fractal Design Node 804 case as soon as I can.

Thanks Nemesis
Having played around a bit, did not see that I had the option to define where I want my apps installed to, this case Volume1 ?
Still curious, how big is the XPenology install, how much space does it take up for a OS copy in the first couple of blocks of each drive ?
G

Question, curious... how big is the XPenology install?
G

Ok, understand.
Thanks

... If the drives/the Big 4TB drives are physical not in the machine... can not be on there...
If the only drive/storage is in the machine at install time is the M.2 SSD then surely it only sits on there.
Or will the OS be replicated onto the 4TB when they are installed and the XPenology is started the next time.

Hi guys
Just curious. so I download the synology boot img onto a USB stick, which is the boot loader. this then the first time ask me to upload the pat file.
Question, how where does it install the pat file if I have multiple drives in the host.
I'm going to have the usb thumb drive internal for the boot loader, I'm installing a 128GB M.2 SSD device which I want to use for the XPenology software install, this will also be my Flex Media Server Cache and meta data storage space.
And then Installing X large drives, was thinking easiest to make sure it all gets installed on the M.2 SSD is to not install the large drives until XPenology is installed. ?

Makes sense, as I only have 4 drives, it's only offering SHR-1
If I have 5-6 drives, then it might offer SHR-2.
Will lab it.
