GNOboot is outdated, time to upgrade.
-
Piracy isn't welcome here
Er, this forum is for a pirated version of DSM...
-
Could you not boot in upgrade/install mode and use a compatible .pat?
-
The breakout cables are for switches not nics.
-
Do you have 5644.5 boot image?
-
Not happening, Hyper-V doesn't support it. If you want that, use VMWare.
-
Did well there!

10GbE should be cheaper than 8Gb FC to implement, surely?
If you're looking at going FC then it's safe to assume you're just going NAS => PC so that would mean no need for a 10gig switch.
For the cost of one FC card you should be able to get two SFP+ 10GbE cards and an SFP+ DA cable to link things.
-
Fiber is pretty straight forward usually... what problems are you having?
I've not used it on Synology before to be fair, but have experience with "proper" FC SANs.

Well it means if you set the drives to AHCI they go back to the B120i and the time and date is reset and all other settings boot options etc! Annoying.
That's the thing, it's not annoying. I don't use the onboard RAID and I never have to do a thing on reboot. Everything else going back to defaults doesn't cause a problem.
That's why I thought I wasn't getting reset.

Apologies; I am incorrect... I just checked and it does say it's been reverted at the boot menu.
Just never noticed before and have no adverse affects
-
Mine doesn't reset it's BIOS on reboot either (bare metal XPE).
Sure it takes an age to boot up, but that's just because it's an HP server.

Got it's own Virtual Machine thingy in there. Oooo does that mean we can ditch ESXi?
Depends on your use case. If you want to run VMs directly from your NAS, it's useful.
ESXi is in no comparable to it.

Hyper-V would be my suggestion.
-
You can also get some updates via Intelligent Provisioning

Yeah mine's pretty quiet, except for the usual server scream during POST.

Can someone advice how to go about logging into the Gen8 (eg BIOS) running Xpenology on a USB when it is headless?
iLO
-
Can't show them if the repo hasn't been added
-
I tried to "live" update my USB stick this morning by unmounting it and using dd to write the .img, but it didn't boot.
-
It's completely wrong about the fan, mine is currently running at 12% according to iLO
-
Just boy of the USB stick and go, nothing to work about. It's really easy.
-
Will need drivers

Does your switch support LAG?
XPEnology on professional EMC² SAN Hardware?

Put XPE on any old system and hook the SAN up to it with a nice FC HBA
