  1. The new USB booted to the wizard. Wasn't sure how to proceed without losing any data, so I powered off. Inserted the old USB and it booted further than it was and showed a "Overclocking" warning (I'm not overclocking) and so I enabled XMP and it booted into Xpenology ok. Let's see how this goes....
  2. I've been using Xpenology with DSM 7.0.1 running on a Asus Z87/Deluxe motherboard with an Intel i7-4770 CPU. Its been fine, mostly, but I seem to get random reboots. It mostly seems to happen overnight when I am not near the device or using it. Which logs should I be looking in to figure out what is up? Also, after a few of these reboots, it refuses to boot. It POSTs and then stops at the Asus logo and won't continue past that point. If I move the USB to another port, it boots. I am basically switching it between each port in a cycle. What could cause this, is it hardware related? Are the 2 issues related?
  3. Sorry, my bad. I have disks in the system just not using them for real storage. Should be good.
  4. I started with that before eventually running 6.2. I could get it as far as uploading the PAT file and it rebooting, before I just got a blinking cursor. I'm going to retry with another USB since I have 6.2 working now. Not added any disks yet, but I am interested in running this on DSM 7 so its worth playing with before I put it to use :)
  5. I've managed to finally get DSM 6.2.x installed and working, so that is a good start and I am slowly understanding things. I'd still like to see if I can get DSM 7 working, if anyone has any tips?
  6. I am using an old OptiPlex 7010 that has 32GB RAM and an i7-3770 (Ivy Lake) CPU. I have been using redpill via TC to build my USB stick and that has worked to get me booted and discoverable by find.synology.com and Synology Assistant. I then upload the PAT file as requested, but then at reboot I just got a blinking cursor. I have made progress since my first attempts did nothing near this, but I am now stuck. I want to use DSM 7 as I am looking at a real device purchase in a few months (unless this proves to be awesome and I don't need to!) so want to use this as a hands on experience of DSM 7 etc. I understand I might need to use a lower version though, but since I started with redpill and the rploader.sh script I am unsure how to use anything else. Any guides I can follow from start to finish?
  7. Hello there! My name is Neil and I am an IT professional working with Kubernetes, Docker, VMware, Azure, AWS etc. etc. etc., based in Scotland. I currently have a ReadyNAS RN104 which has been running for well over 10 years and has been flawless, but is now long in the tooth and I want to do more with my NAS than this thing can handle. My homelab consists of a couple of old rack mounted servers that run VMware ESXi and host several Linux/Windows VM, but these are starting to fail so I need to run the VMs elsewhere now, nothing urgent. I also have some old desktops that I I have been looking at buying a Synology RS1221+ for my server rack at home or a DS1821+ just to sit on my desk. My ability to purchase is several months if not more away so I was looking for alternatives when I discovered Xpenology. Taking the "newer" of my old desktops (a Dell OptiPlex 7010) I really want to use DSM 7 since that is what I would be on with the real device. I am hopeful that I might save some pennies and could even build myself a more powerful NAS running Xpenology. Time will tell! I have made a start installing, but need some help so you will see me posting shortly
