Great news. In this days i'm planning to upgrade my build from DSM 5.1 to DMS 6.1 with a fresh install.

Now i've installed 4 sata drives each with their own volume, so nothing RAID o SHR.  To avoid the problem to have to backup data before each DSM update i will change the build.

I'm switching the sata drives from sata internal mode to esata mode, in this way the drives will become only data EXT4 drives, and i'll add a new drive which will runs DSM.

So when i want to update DSM i have only to unplug the esata data drives, update DSM, check synoinfo.conf and reconnect the drive in esata mode.

I'm thinking to use a SSD as DSM system drive to create a zero-noise build when the esata data drives gone to sleep/hybernation.

About the new transcoding option for Plex i've found this topic: https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/7151-difference-ds916-ds3615xs-and-ds3617xs/

DS3617xs use the Xeon D-1527 which doesn't have any GPU integrated, so i infer that the hardware transcoding will not work with a DS3617xs system image.

At this point, i wonder which system image is better between DS916+ and DS3615xs to test the new hardware transcoding feature.

Were you able to get the DS916+ working on the q1900. I read it was not possible. I have tried to install it, but after the setup, I can't get assisstant to connect to the XPenology....

Did you use SHR before migrating to 6.1? If yes, was your volume also recognized as SHR once on 6.1?

I'm also considering migrating to latest possible version but have read somewhere that SHR is no longer supported.

    yes, and yes!

    I had 2X3 and 2X6tb in SHR

found some interrsting detailed inforamtion about the hardware transcoding on intel based synology boxes

    "...

DS214play and DS415play with Intel Evansport SoC are the only models supported. Serviio uses the multimedia tool FFmpeg for manipulating media files, and I am only able to build a hardware-assisted FFmpeg for DS214play and DS215play. Subsequent to those products, Synology has marketed a number of other systems with hardware transcoding features but these are not supported by Serviio. The DS216play with STiH412 Monaco SoC uses a specialised build of Gstreamer for the Synology transcoding solution, so its hardware features cannot be used by FFmpeg. It seems likely that Synology is also using Gstreamer for the Intel Braswell or newer generation CPUs with QuikSync, since DSM ships with an older FFmpeg (2.7.1) than the version which introduced QuikSync support (2.8.0). To implement FFmpeg QuikSync hardware transcoding support requires Linux kernel patches for libmfx support which is not currently included in DSM 6.x, so Serviio support for Intel QuikSync on Synology is unlikely unless Synology in future switches to using FFmpeg for its own hardware transcoding solution.

    ..."

    https://pcloadletter.co.uk/2012/01/25/serviio-syno-package/

if someone plans to use ffmpeg in cooperation with Quick Sync Video, DSM 6 is no good, but the synology inegated hardware trancoding might work if the processor supports Quick Sync Video (up to now no reports about a running dsm 6.1 916+ image on non synology hardware)

According to Plex they now support hardware transcoding on Synology 64bit systems from DSM6 onwards. it's only for plex pass users, but possibly that might sort things out?

Want to try this with my system, but first need to go from DSM 5.2 to DSM 6, still havent pulled the trigger.

Not sure though of it supports the 916, the 3615, or the 3617. I thought it was the 15, but can't find the info anymore.

    3 different versions available

Is this the version with plex hardware transcoding? As far as i am aware that is only available for the 64bit intel system and only for plex pass users. Normal plex is indeed available for all, and in different versions

there is a thread about it:

you can't use DS916+ image because your cpu is too old - xeon V4 needed or HASWELL desktop CPU

its up to you to go for ds3615xs or ds3617xs

If you want to have plex and use the experimental transcoding feature you will need to use the 15. the 17 is not yet supported

  6. Thanks Filippo333 for the clear answer. So what you say is if I have a SHR, it will retain that configuration, eventhough a fresh system can not select SHR as a RAID option. It used to be an option as I started from scratch on the DS3615xs, and built the SHR on that with 4 drive (2x3tb and 2 x6TB so don't want to go to RAID 5 as that will cost 3TB of storage). Since DSM 6, it can no longer be selected as option in the DS3615xs, possibly still on the more consumer focused units indeed.

Would be great to hear some feedback from others on the update route (5.2->6.1 or 5.2->6.02->6.1)

  7. Is it possible/wise to update in one go from 5.2 to 6.1. just tested it on a spare drive with 5.2 on it, and all went smooth, however before jumping to production two questions:

    1. Will I retain the SHR setup? in the new 6.1 it is no longer possible te select SHR (unless you change the settings through synoinfo.conf

    2. can I jump in one go from 5.2 to 6.1? or is it wise to install 6.02 first?

    thanks

    on a Q1900 with SHR and 4 HDD's

  8. Before going to my production system I wanted to test it with an old drive I still had lying around. It has an older version of DSM installed, however I forgot the password on it..... How can I reset the password with 6.1? Anybody have an idea?

Have a Q1900. I have successfully uploaded the new DSM version and tried to migrate, however as mentioned stuck on logging into the system...

  9. In my Case Raid has saved my system more than once after a power outage, or unexpected power off of the system, after which the partition(s)/drive(s) became corrupted... so will unfortunately stay on RAID.

indeed very dirty, and will try am upgrade, but first will do a clean HDD to see if I can get it working correctly
