I'm not looking to do this, but I thought I'd ask the question anyway because I'm curious. In syslinux.cfg there are variables that allow us to set the serial and model...has anybody successfully changed from DS3615xs to, for example, a DS916+ instead? I suppose someone with OCD might find this useful if they built out XPE in a desktop that only has space for four hard drives. I know the pat we use for installing the DSM is for the DS3615xs, so if you are able to change the model and serial...what do you do about the pat file?

AllGamer, just add mac1=0011223344BBFF to your syslinux.cfg file. Example below. Continue with mac2= mac3= etc if you have multiple NICs.

You'll need to specify both the serial and mac address in the syslinux.cfg file in order for it to work. This is not guaranteeing it will work though...unless maybe the real Synology is no longer using quickconnect. This would mean the xpe box is taking ownership of the serial and mac address and *should* then work.

I just did some quick research and testing in a few of my VM's and sadly, Synology's Linux support is barebones and hardly functional. Might be better off buying a cheaper micro pc that runs a more supported OS for full featured live-viewing and playback.

Now Synology has NVR with HDMI output
I imagine this is because the NVR's are running a different build of DSM.

Just access it over the network, it's built that way.
You can put a raspberry pi or whatever behind your monitor and open up a browser, that way you don't actually 'see' your device and you can still use your laptop.
Yeah, that's what I thought, buy a cheap a raspberry Pi, may work.
But I wonder if a raspberry Pi has the processing power to output, say 8 channels of surveillance camera
on live viewing?
I actually really like this idea and have added it to my to-do list. The RaspberryPi should have enough processing power to view the cameras fine.
I've got three bare metal boxes running SS at each site and between 2-4 cameras on each recording 3MP @ 20fps without any issue. Been recording rock solid for several years now. Very impressed.

This file is created by:
1. Download Synoboot: https://github.com/Jman420/nanoBoot-DSM ... 3612xs.img
2. Write the file to pen drive.
3. Expand the partition and filesystem to ~100MB. Expansion of ext filesystem is way easier than FAT, and that is one of the reasons why I choose Synoboot.
4. Replace zImage with *ORIGINAL* XPEnology 5.6-5644.5 one.
5. Compress modified ramdisk (with synobios.ko hax) with gzip as rd.gz
6. Add initrd parameter in /boot/grub/grub.conf.
7. dd if=/dev/sdX of=img
@updateing, you are my hero. I can now use my old Dell towers that suffered the bios corruption issue. Just verified full functionality and perfect restarts from the DSM on an Optiplex 755. I used Win32DiskImager with your pre-made img "XPEnology-Synoboot-512MB-5644.5.7z" and it works flawlessly.
I just made the same edit as @tahitibub in the grub.conf to adjust my vid and pid and wow, flawless.
This is great. I can't thank you enough!

Lol, no, I just can't read Chinese and don't want to fuss with Chrome's translate function each time I go into the interface. If that doesn't bother you then save even more money and get the China models.
Edit: Oh! The timestamp is not in English...so unless your recording software is burning in a time stamp you'll have a non-standard date and time and it won't be in English. That was my biggest reason for going with the English firmware models. I don't like burning in anything to my stream. Too much load on the recording server. Instead, the camera adds the text and all the server has to do is decode and record the stream. Much less stress on the CPU.

Are you happy with the performance of the T20? That's a pretty affordable chassis. Also, since your data store is a single drive how are you maintaining a backup of it?

1 for Hikvision. Best quality (day and night) that I've come across for the price. As Threska960 said, look for US or International or you'll be stuck with a Chinese firmware. I own and have installed *many* Hikvision cameras and have been nothing but happy with them.
For $100 I'd look at these models:
Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I (Dome Style)
Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I (Bullet Style)
Hikvision DS-2CD2332-I (Turret Style)
Prices vary on these models but I've seen them priced ~$100 on Amazon. If you're looking to buy in bulk there are some great vendors on Aliexpress.com that sell the English firmware models of these at excellent prices.

Hi there,
You can add them to the system but they won't be readable for data transfer. You will be prompted upon volume creation to erase all data on the disks installed. If you're looking to migrate data from single disks to your new RAID volume I'd recommend using a USB/eSATA enclosure to transfer data from the individual drives to the new RAID volume. Then, once transferred, you can add your drives into the NAS and expand your volume.

Sorry my comment won't be tremendously useful but I am running DSM 5.2-5644 Update 5 with two Hikvision DS-2CD2332-I 3MP cameras recording at 20fps each 24/7. I've never had a single issue with Surveillance Station (as of writing this SS version 7.1-4141). This is all on a baremetal installation though, no ESXi in the mix.
If anything, I would hope this helps narrow down to looking for an ESXi related issue.

Oh, also, the PowerEdge T105 is miserable with XPE due to the bios corruption on reboot/shutdown. Not only do you lose all your BIOS settings, but what it defaults to changes the boot order to ignore the USB drive so every...single...time...you have to set your boot order, enable SMART, etc. Definitely using that box for something else now. I couldn't be happier with my Optiplex 780 after all the hassle with older models and even the T105.

The Optiplex 745, 755, and 760 all suffer from the corrupt BIOS issue when rebooting/shutting down from DSM. There are no BIOS protections for those models that I have found to protect the BIOS from DSM's CMOS write which occurs at reboot/shutdown. The Optiplex 780 and 790 (and likely newer models as well) that use the graphical BIOS work like a dream. You can update, restart, shutdown from the DSM without any worry of BIOS corruption.

Also, I've tried to research here and there about minor and major updates for XPEnology and they seem quite complicate to me, needing to extract the usb flash memory, copying a new image, and rebooting (I guess I need also a screen connected to the server to do it), and following the wizard. Some tutorials I've seen use SSH too, and all these options seem to be much more complicate than unRAID right now. Is it like that? Or did I just looked at the wrong tutorials?
Here is the procedure I use to update the boot loader on the USB flash drive:
1. SSH to the NAS.
2. type in the following commands:
[spoiler=]wget m https://download.xpenology.fr/XPEnology ... 5592.2.img m (use appropriate link based on version of boot loader)
find you usbdrive with fdisk -l
dd if=XPEnoboot_DS3615xs_5.2-5644.1.img of=/dev/sdg1 (sdg1 should be replaced with whatever your USB flash drive ID is)
3. Update the Synology DSM from your web browser.
4. Reboot.

I use this method because I do not have a monitor or keyboard connected to my NAS. I use the Terminal app in OS X to do it all.
I've never seen this method...this is extremely useful and practical. Thank you for sharing!

- Do you use Time Machine? Is it reliable? with unRAID I'm having issues, I don't know if it's because of my Mac, but it gets corrupted quite often, so I have to start a new one after a couple of weeks
I've been using Time Machine on multiple XPE boxes for nearly two years now without any problems. Works just like it should and is there when you need it.

Haha, yeah, what pastrychef said...but I'd like to add that if you edited your cfg file with a new serial number/MAC address/PID/VID, be sure to do that on the new drive as well.

Out of curiosity I wanted to start a quick discussion on if people were achieving speeds faster than 1Gb/s at home with XPE. I'm not necessarily expressing a need for it, just curious. Personally, I'm thrilled to find my latest build is twice as fast as my real Synology box and I plan on taking advantage of that faster speed immediately. Big thanks to Kanedo and Octavean for pointing out some practical options! I've been getting ~45MB/s on my real Synology and I'm getting a steady, reproducible ~110MB/s on the Dell. It appears (to me) that the steady 110MB/s is a limit of my network and not the Dell or disks which is what started my curiosity about, "I wonder if someone is getting faster speeds than 110 in a home environment." Thanks, all, for contributing to the discussion!

Hello out there! My latest build, an 8x1TB setup in a Dell Optiplex 780 is proving to be my favorite so far. I just did a speed comparison between my real Synology 412+ and this Dell and the Dell is twice as fast. In fact, so fast that I capped at the maximum throughput for a single gigabit ethernet connection.
So this got me thinking...
Since the DS3615xs supports "up to 2,214.77 MB/s throughput in reading" I'm curious...has anyone achieved anything near this speed in a home setup? If so, I'd love to hear what kind of network hardware you're using to make it possible. I'm sure NIC teaming is involved since a single gig connection can only go so fast...but advertised speeds at 2214 MB/s...is that some kind of 10gig setup? I can't imagine any one client getting speeds that high, but that's some incredible throughput.

Hi, sorry I'm just now seeing your post. Updating to the latest BIOS makes no difference, but a member here by the name of "updateing" has created a modified boot loader that completely resolves the CMOS write corruption. More info at the link below. I've confirmed it works flawlessly on the older Dells I had previously listed here.
