Hi all.
I am new to all this(oh no not another one)
Can I ask two things.
1-Can I leave the USB stick out after the install and boot from the 2.5 hd?
2-Can any USB keyboard be used on the N54L
Thank you to Nighthawk for working on the port.
You have to boot from the USB stick.
Several USB keyboards have worked for me so I suspect keyboard support is pretty broad.
Thanks for the help.
I got it installed now with the 250GB HD but when I added another 2TG HD it won't let me format it!
Do I need to put the drives in before I install XPEnology (hope not)
thanks again.
You can add drives after the initial install.
Does the new drive show up in the BIOS messages during boot or in BIOS setup?

unmesh, i had the same issue and solved it.
Just follow my post.
That worked great for manual config!
Did you have any success with the instructions to make the config persistent through reboots? This version of Linux does not seem to have the /etc/networking/ and /etc/init.d/ directories. I'm also wondering how the two insmod commands will get executed through the reboot.
Also, after creating the networking interface through the shell, Control Panel -> Networking through the Web GUI errors out. Turning the interface off restores the GUI functionality.
Thanks.

Hi,
When you load the module the interface isn't configured. You need to manually configure it!
See some Linux Ubuntu HowTo about configure an USB external NIC.
TN.
I looked at a number of web pages but they seem to want you to run lsusb or edit /etc/network/interfaces, neither of which exist on the DSM. On the other hand, I did learn that I should run "ifconfig -a" to see all interfaces and the USB NIC does show up there.
I will keep looking.

i have a small issue. When entering insmod:
/lib/modules/usbnet.ko
i get:
insmod: can't insert '/lib/modules/usbnet.ko': unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter
Any suggestions or sharing the right usbnet.ko for me?
Sure, you need to update the version of the "usbcore.ko" module
See: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=915#p4292
In my system the driver is working (connected to an USB 2.0 port). You need to configure the new ethX manually.
I already had the modified USB drivers installed and added this one to /lib/modules/ and ran the insmod commands. However, my interface just not show up in either in the web console or in the terminal when I use the ifconfig command.
What else can do I do the debug the problem?
I'm running 4.2 x64 build 3211.
Thanks.

I want to get my USB external hard drive working with my HP microserver.
I have a few questions:
1) do I need to do both steps? Ie add support for OHCI driver and copy across the kernel modules?
2) if so, which file do I need to modify in the kernel and how do you do this?
3) what's the best method for copying across the modules?
It would be great if someone could post a step by step guide to doing this?
Thanks
Mike
Collect all the .ko files mentioned previously.
Using something like WinSCP on a PC running windows, copy these over to /lib/modules on your Xpenology box
Reboot and you should have the USB drivers loaded.

#4: OHCI support
Thanks totalnas.
My UPS APC 350 is now recognised by my N54L.
Thanks quicksilver.
For the info on how to decode the pastbin files.
Likewise with my APC ES500.
Many thanks!

My N36L get perfect WOL with the help from chinese forum:
http://nas1.cn/thread-64278-1-1.html
1. modify the /etc/synoinfo.conf wol_enabled_options=“” and eth0_wol_options="" to "g"
2. put the attached file to /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/ and give the file execuable permission。
reboot and enjoy
Jason,
Since the N36L does not support S3 sleep, what state are you waking your machine up from over the LAN? And how do you get it to go into that state in the first place
Thanks.

Hello,
the hibernation of the disks now work, when i remove the usb stick from the system
Hmmm. I wonder if one can install the boot image to say a small SSD instead of a USB stick to have a solution that does not involve removing/reinserting the latter.

Hi. Tell me how to modify the BIOS for N40l. Where to download the upgraded firmware for 5 sata. And how preproshit BIOS?
Take a look at http://homeservershow.com/hp-proliant-n ... sited.html

Also, for those that are discovering that they need to reflash the USB drive after every shutdown, the quick and dirty workaround is to remove the USB drive before clicking on Shutdown in the console. Once I have drive hibernation working and 4.2 installed, I will buy a USB drive with a hardware write protection switch that I can leave in the machine. These are unfortunately much more expensive than the normal kind
I found a cheaper solution for this which is to use a SD or SDHC card (these have a write protection switch) with a USB card reader that implements write protection (not all do).
An inexpensive one that worked for me is http://dx.com/p/sdhc-usb-2-0-card-reader-6858. It encloses the entire card which makes it a bit wide but the MicroServer has its USB ports one above the other so there is no interference.

Hi, everything fine after updated DSM 4.2 but the SATA port 4 (i.e. not the HD rack mount) can't be recognized. So, I just use 4 Disks only. Thank you!
On my n40l (with patched bios) i have all 5 internal drives.
5'th hdd contains DSM with "trash" partition, other 4 drives contains all usefull files.
Does the OS reside on what you are describing as the 5'th HDD? And what port is it connected to?
Thanks.
Answering one of my questions, I discovered that, if I have a drive in the left most bay, I can also see the SSD attached to the 5th SATA port but not if the SSD is the only drive.

I'm new here after hanging out at the avsforum.com site which is derivative and has much less activity.
Has anyone with the modded BIOS been able to use either the eSATA or the 5th SATA ports? I get an error when I try to install DSM to a drive on the 5th SATA port.
Thanks.

The modules allowed me to use external USB drives and my USB-connected UPS to work. If that functionality is useful to you, install them.
