  1. Update:

I reinstalled the DSM, I used "arpl i18n" loader like last time.

I then 'restored' rather than install new DSM. After few minutes DSM is back.

More interesting things, it is still 7.2.3 (updated one) but now my cache is back and volume is back.

Running  data scrub just to make sure.

I think maybe DS920+ doesn't have NVME SSD support?

I used an addon in ARPL to add NVME support, last time and this time during reinstall.

Maybe update i ran, on its own rewrote NVME support feature and caused NVMEs not to be seen and crashed the whole thing?

Anyway, for now it seems to be working.

  2. HI guys,

Upgraded my NAS to next upgrade for 7.2 (update 3), and after reboot I am presented with a message of SSD cache Group is missing.

I cannot see the SSDs in Storage Manager, i only see 2x HDD.

I haven't done anythig overnight on the NAS so SSD cache should not be important. How can I get out of this one?

I do not see my Volume anymore but HDDs are Healthy.

**Update - SSD cache drives not visible at all, I restarted the NAS without any change.

Do I just reinstall DSM 7.2.1 on the NAS? I did this to my old NAS few months ago and all data remained intact.

  3. Update: RESOLVED

To help out others with similar issues:

I read a lot of people mention grub settings with issues such as this. however none resolutions worked.

I read one issue where it was resolved with a BIOS update, that is what I did and it resolved itself. text appears normal.

In case if it was a combination of GRUB config change and BIOS updates here are the changes I did to USB boot as well:

Edit GRUB.cfg file in notepad or similar, find "GRUB_GFXMODE=AUTO"  and change "AUTO to "800x600" Do not use any ultrawide resolution as GRUB does not contain such fancy resolutions. the one i used worked fine on my ultrawide monitor.

  4. Hi all,

I've used the same approach to install DSM 7.2 last week on another NAS, so i know the proces should work.

With this install, I get this indistinguishable text. I tried a different USB and re-flashed the image....any idea?

It can't be hardware as boot sequence seems to have normal text. Is it the flashing process?

I used Etcher to flash the image so there are no steps I can screw up...I think

unfortunately I only have mini-pcie express slot free on mobo and cards are difficult to acquire quickly.

It seems my RTL8111GR LAN NIC drivers are not suppoirted in 6xx versions so I am unsure how to proceed next. Can I pay someone a beer or two in donation to load my NIC drivers into 6xx version?

I tried again with re-downloaded 6.2 files on a clean spare HDD and it worked. I then inserted actual HDD in NAS and removed spare one - repaired the partitions and all data is saved and I'm up and running 6.2 :)

thank you all, I couldn't have done it without this wonderful community

@milosv you can find here in the forum a tutorial on how to downgrade (with migration process).

You can also just add a cheap Intel nic to your built and it should work also with your current installed loader.

  7. @bearcat that was a great idea, and it almost worked until I stuffed up and instead of manual install PAT file I downloaded I clicked on install thinking it would ask me later...it didn't. It installed the latest 6.21 so now I am trying to downgrade the unit.

but the idea was brilliant, my execution was poor :)

thank you all, I'll try and downgrade to 6.1 and see if it works.

  8. Hi Guys and gals, your help is truly appreciated.

I was updating to 6.1 but mistakenly clicked on install and not 'MANUAL install' and it updated it to 6.2 automatically so it became not compatible with 1.02 loader, so then I switched to 6.2 loader and installation and Migration went fine but afterwards not detected in LAN. Not sure if it is drivers for my setup or something else I did wrong?

    I really appreciate your help.

Motherboard - J3710 - ITX (Bios not updated to latest)
    CPU - onboard  - Intel J3710
    Loader - 1.03b DS3617xs
    SATA - RocketRAID 2720SGL

    EDIT:

I tried Loader 1.04b with DS318 in hope it will help....nope.

Issue I have now is that I have the latest 6.2 DSM installed so I can't revert to 6.1 or anything else....I think. Right?

I think that you're trying to login with a standard user, not an account which belongs to the admin group. Only users which are members of the admin group can login via SSH. You should try the admin user which was created during your setup/install.

I did use the admin user, I disabled the default admin and created my own. but SSH crashes after login details are entered so not sure SSH was setup correctly.

    grrrrr...damn you 2FA :)

Can you connect via SSH? If the answer is yes try this:

    sudo find /usr -name google_authenticator

    The result should be:

    /usr/syno/etc/preference/YOURUSERNAME/google_authenticator

    Remove the entry with:

    rm /usr/syno/etc/preference/YOURUSERNAME/google_authenticator

(replace YOURUSERNAME with your real username)

Reboot with „sudo reboot“ and try again to log in

When I use Putty after entering my correct username and password putty just shuts down without any further prompts. I tried multiple times.

  11. Hi guys,

I used 2FA authentication for DSM access for 2 years. last few months my 2FA codes stopped working properly and I had to use emergency email code - that worked fine.

I would then reset 2FA and it worked again until few weeks ago.

2FA codes don't work again and this time when I use emergency code via email - no email is received (waited for 2 weeks, tried many times, checked spam solder) - meaning email settings have stuffed up or Google has changed something in Gmail again.

In any case, I can't get the 2FA code to work. I can still access data via mapped drive but I can't get into DSM settings at all.

    • I am on DSM 5.2 - can I just upgrade to 6.17 and password or 2FA can be reset?
    • Or do I reinstall fresh 6.17 and I can just restore data?

I have backed up essential data already but ran out of HDD space to back up non-essential data. worst case scenario I have all backups I really need but would like to avoid copying 5TB of data via usb 2.0 if possible.

any help or guidance is appreciated.

  12. Guys,

    What the hell happened?

I just tried to access the server and I couldn't. I logged into web menu and I got this message: Abnormality detected on Server. All volumes have been unmounted.

There is no volume on server anymore. How can I access data?

I did notice that automated DSM update occurred 2 days prior to this. Not sure if related. I just want to access my data, I can rebuild the volume/server if need be.

Any suggestions are welcome. Of course this occurs just as I was replacing my backup drives of the server so I have only 1 month old backup (backup drives are taking longer to arrive than expected)

  13. Ok boys and girls,

I truly need your help now.

I was trying to fix a copy issue and have now completely stuffed the NAS volume.

Tell me if this is xpenology setting problem or just a windows permissions one.

I modified permissions for my entire mapped NAS folder that contains everything.

I went to mapped drive>Right click>Properties>Security>Advanced button and changed OWNER to Admin.

That stuffed everything up. I can open and access everything but I can't copy or write to my entire NAS volume.

I had a test volume next to my main one on NAS and I see now that its permissions are set to have 'NAS admin user' as OWNER not generic Admin as I have done.

DO I just need to change permissions of the volume back to NAS admin user as OWNER?

I am in process of doing so, it will take few hours for all files to be modified in windows 10.

How do I go back to reset or modify permissions to have normal access?

In xpenology I set up read/write access for NAS admin user and admin (these were never directly modified by me). Guest profile is read only. these are all under local user.

do I need to enable/modify anything else?

Thank you from confused and frustrated idiot who should never have changed security settings.
