  1. I'm still running 4.2-3202 on ESXi 5.1U2 and it seems like my Synology VM utilizes all my CPU, even when idle. Has anyone else seen this? I'm using RDM for my drives, and really haven't installed anything else. Is there a way to see what's running currently and what's taking up the CPU?

EDIT: Let me clarify - the CPU usage is high in the VMWare Console, but when I log into the Synology itself, CPU is low and it doesn't appear that anything is running. Something has to be, perhaps something that's not tracked by the internal monitors.

    You might have been hacked.

    Update to a higher version

  2. If you have access to a linux machine you can mount the .vmdk an pull the vender file and edited using the vender patcher tool, unmount the .vmdk and all is good

that's how i did it and it worked ok.

i do have 4 internal nics and i'm passing thru one to the xpenology machine

I did the same today, it is working fine with my 2 N54L machines with ESXi, but I still cannot get HA working.

I am suspecting the problem comes from the NIC MAC, it might need to be the real NIC MAC.

but N54L might not be able to pass thru the real NIC MAC all the way to the VM.

I don't know how to do that. .......

  3. why do you want to change the mac adress?

is it possible to activate HDD hibernate (spin down) while using esxi?

I am using WD Green HDD (took it from WD Elements) and this hdd supports auto-hibernation by time.

I enabled HDD Suspend by 20mins in XPEnology, But it seems not to be working in the N54L with esxi?!

i am trying HA then I chang MAC addresses.

    have you tried this :

    viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1999

not sure if it works for ESXi

  4. I tried ESXi.

2 DSM run on 2 different ESXi boxes.

I got some different log messages, but I don't know if those are critical ( caused by ESXi )

  5. I downloaded the VMDF file from ESXi datastore onto PC, then I use a hex editor to change the MAC address and serial number in the vmdk.

then I uploaded back to the datastore, and I bootup the VM.

I can see from the Synology assistant that my VM has the modified serial number and MAC address.

but when I check inside the VM by bring out the system info, I have a blank serial number, do I need any more edit ?

  7. Hi everyone,

do you know if there could be a way to be able from an esxi VM with xbmc (or equivalent) to use the hdmi output of an additional graphic card installed on a n54l ?

    To say that differently :

I would like to install 2 esxi vm on a n54l

    - 1st with xpenology (to store)

    - 2nd with xbmc (or eq) to render 1080pvideo+audio through the hdmi output (specific, can be fully dedicated, graphic card asus 6450 or other)

It seems (as I understood as a newbie) that this kind of solution requires wmdirectpath i/o and is not compatible with n54l... I hope I'm wrong

I'll be very happy (thank you) if someone know a way to solve that

    Thx you in advance

    Idha,

I think you mean 2 VM on a ESXi of a N54L (since you cannot install 2 ESXi into 1 machine).

    1 VM is Xpenology

another VM with an OS that runs XBMC

N54L does not support directpath i/o.

But there are other succss stories about using a low cost (low energy is the main reason) display card that can be used from VM (forget if that is windows) and output to TV via HDMI. You can check more.

    Thank you

So I will have to use a 'normal', and not so flexible, install : 1 native OS (with xbmc installed) that hosts a VM for XPenology ...

Do you have some advice about Native OS (Linux, Win8.1, WHS2011 ?) and VM technology (Virtual Box, Hyper-V, Workstation, ?) to use in order to get 'honorable' disk performances ?

Thank you for all your answers

    ldha

sorry I have not tried myself for other OS with XBMC, but I guess Linux would not be a bad choice because I have read a lot of successful stories of Linux and XBMC, but not with Windows .....

  8. anyone ever tried the High Availability option? can't get it working, everytime i connect the heartbeat cable both systems are "looping".(2xN54L)

    best regards,

    Leon

believe changing the MAC addresses is the first step.

I tried with 2xN54L and both are on ESXi 5.1

I did change the MAC addresses, but I got this error message "operation failed. Please re-login and try again" after confirming the HA name and addressess.

  10. Hi,

Succesfully installed this version on a esxi 5.5 with all disks in SATA mode!

Everything works well but on my Fractal design Node 605 case, I have 2 USB 3.0 ports. When I connect a USB drive to the USB at the back (motherboard), the drive is detected.

When i connect it to the USB ports on the front panel of the case, the disk lights up but is not deteceted.

Any idea how to solve this?

    Thx!

how do you resolve the Grub22 repeatedly showing up problem upon restart the DSM VM ?

  11. if the VM (vmdk) is in harddrive, the issue was that the shutdown has some process to write back to the vmdk and upon restart the error comes back.

    That is what I guess.

As have seen other threads saying solutions are just terminate the VM (not shutdown) or don't use VM but boot from the thumb drive which the DSM is install into and unplug the thumb driver after boot up or write protect it.
