Take a look at the tutorials here: http://www.xpenology.nl/tutorials/
Maybe they can guide you into the light.

Maybe a stupid question, but why do you want to use this old version?
Why not go for the newest available, DSM 5.1 build 5022?
I've still got this old file, XPEnology_3827-pre-v1.1_beta7.7z, don't know if it is useable for you.

This is simply just great! Now my N54L is almost hybernating...
NAS8> grep "MHz" /proc/cpuinfo cpu MHz : 2196.380 cpu MHz : 2196.380 NAS8> insmod /lib/modules/powernow-k8.ko NAS8> dmesg|grep powernow [ 98.393259] powernow-k8: Found 1 AMD Turion(tm) II Neo N54L Dual-Core Processor (2 cpu cores) (version 2.20.00) [ 98.393303] powernow-k8: 0 : pstate 0 (2200 MHz) [ 98.393305] powernow-k8: 1 : pstate 1 (1900 MHz) [ 98.393307] powernow-k8: 2 : pstate 2 (1600 MHz) [ 98.393308] powernow-k8: 3 : pstate 3 (1300 MHz) [ 98.393310] powernow-k8: 4 : pstate 4 (800 MHz) NAS8> echo conservative > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor NAS8> echo conservative > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor NAS8> grep "MHz" /proc/cpuinfo cpu MHz : 800.000 cpu MHz : 800.000
Thanks sancome!

Search the forum for http user group.
You need to have a user group "http" and give this read access to the web share.
It's a known problem when upgrading from 4.3 to 5.0/5.1.
-
Have you looked in syslinux.cfg in the IMG/ISO/VMDK file of XPEnoboot?
-
DSM IS on every disk. DSM builds a raid, that covers all disks in your system. If you look at your disks, they all contain 2 partitions in the beginning (DSM and swap-partition), and then the volume partition(s) where you store your data.
Packages are often installed on volume 1 if they need to store some data.

The USB stick emulates the built in boot-ROM in a real Synology.
As soon as the NAS is up and running, you may remove the USB stick - it is not needed before you need to reboot your NAS.
All DSM software is, as you state, installed on every HDD in your system.
-
I'm afraid so.
My upgrades - have done 5 until now - all went fine, and all my packages were fine. But then i don't have that many. Photostation, Audiostation, VPN, Webalizer and a few more that I don't remember.
From which version did you upgrade? I've only upgraded from v5.0 b4528U2.
-
-
Everything seems to be fine except the detection of the 5th and 6th drives (ODD and external SATA) that I'm not sure if it's something I did or if it's something with 5.1.
I'm running DSM5.1 b5022U2 (upgraded from 5.0 b4528U2) on 5 disks in my N54L - bare metal. The fifth disk is connected to the ODD port.
Have you checked your BIOS - verified that nothing has changed during the upgrade?
-
I know several people did that downgrade when the first version of Xpenoboot was release - the one with the little timebomb. And then did an upgrade again after the next version was released.
But then again - if your system is running fine, then I wouldn't bother.
-
From which version did you upgrade?
Did you do any customization in the old version? Special settings or packages and so on.
-
Anyway, I prefer AMD over Intel because the limitation in the MAX RAM. I hope HP will release soon Microserver G9 with AMD CPUs.
What do you mean by RAM limitation? Both microserver Gen7 (AMD N54L) and Gen8 (Intel Celeron/Pentium/Xeon) handles 16GB RAM.
Or am I missing something here...??
-
Do you have a 10GBit network? Or else the network card in the N54L has no problem with delivering more than 100MByte/s (1GBit/s) .
Buy your wife a little nice present instead of the network card - and live a little longer!

Have a look at these:

What address / site are people donating to? I'd be happy to make a donation - I've been so impressed with Xpenology project - just not sure where!
I've made my donation here: http://nanoboot.eu.org/

Donated! Keep up the much appreciated work, guys!

A DSM 5.1 boot image is under heavy development behind closed doors with a team of contributors (sancome included). We have had great success and are in the process of working out the last few bugs. Try to be patient and wait for a release announcement.
This is some serious good news! My deepest respect to you guys. Thank you SO much!
No rush - all good things come in due time.
-
The new 1TB disk - is it completely empty? No old partitions?
If used before, I would remove all old partitions before using the disk in XPEnology.
-
Did you check the user rights on the shares? As far as I remember an upgrade from DSM 4.3 to 5.0 did a reset on the permissions on all shares.
-
I'm using this one: http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f1 ... st21503128
This also allows you to use the ODD port as a full blown SATA port for a 5th harddrive.
And then do these configs.
To enable AHCI on all ports, go to Southbridge Config, SATA 4/5 and disable sata 4/5 IDE mode.
From the main screen go to ‘Chipset > Southbridge Configuration > SB SATA Configuration’ and make sure your settings are the same as below:
OnChip SATA Channel = Enabled
OnChip IDE Type = IDE
SATA IDE Combined Mode = Disabled
SATA EPS on all PORT = Enabled
SATA Power on all PORT = Enabled
Return to the main screen then go to ‘Advanced > IDE Configuration’ and again, make sure your settings are the same as below.
Embedded SATA Link Rate = 3.0Gbps MAX

It is not possible to upgrade to or install DSM 5.1 yet.
The sed-command is only useable when upgrading within the same build version of DSM, what Synology like to call Updates. That is DSM 5.0 b4528 to DSM b4528 Update 2.
The latest available version to Xpenology is DSM 5.0 b4528 Update 2.
-
Search forum for synoinfo.conf - I don't remember the syntax, but you have to tell Synology how many disks you have, USB ports and e-sata ports.

Thanks for your update - I too was worried about the noise.
I think you should change the serial - I've changed it on all my units.
I live in Denmark, and we have gratisdns.dk, so that is what I use. It's free of charge.
