  1. Not working for me, why is this working for some people [emoji20]

    Not showing up on the network, same for the 6.1 Loader.
    Xpnology Loader (5.2) is the last one working for me.
    Post a screen of your vm settings maybe I can see what you did wrong. Think most important is this sata settings.
    Also you should change the MAC address in the boot image to the one vmware is generating after first boot.

  2. I'm currently running bare metal on 6.1.3.  I was thinking about doing virtual, but I'm not sure what that would do to the performance of apps like Plex.
    Since plex does not support any hardware acceleration like gpu encoding, at least to my knowledge (and if so very experimental and on dsm only the hardware which is synology own and only used in specific synology boxes) I would say performance is, depending on your used hardware of course, same as bare metal. CPU power is what you are left with anyways and if you are able to do vt-d and vt-x or the AMD pendants virtualization is your friend.
    I pass the hba controller through to the xpenology vm and for dsm those drives are natively recognized with full speed of the controller (I think dsm limits here anyways - but dsm Speedtest shows maximum throughput of the hdd)

    But back to topic - it surprises me that the 58 drive config of the above video does not work for you.
    I am also wondering about SataPortMap in grub config file. I was under the impression that you bare metal guys have to tinker with that setting depending on the amount of controllers you use.
    For virtual environment so far I never touched this. Could there be a reason why this keeps breaking dsm?

  3. Hallo,

  4.
    So - I'm back at it again.  This guy used my tutorial I had posted here: http://thomaskayblog.com/initial-configuration-of-xpenology-on-45-drives-nas-unit/ to get his pod to 58 drives.  Here's what I don't understand.  I thought there was a limit somewhere to 26 drives based on how Linux creates the drive lettering.  Apparently, that's not exactly the case.

    Here's what I've tried - I have a 45 Drives Storinator and a 60 Drive Storinator.  In my 45 drives storinator, I had originally had 3xLSI9201-16i cards.  I modded the synoinfo.conf file to account for all 48 drives + 10 drives onboard.  Matching this guy's post to the letter.  Reboot, and it reboots on its own back to the install screen.  So I thought well, maybe it was because he daisy chained the SAS ports.  So I went out and bought 2 HP SAS Expanders and internally cabled it to be daisy chained off of one LSI9201-16i port. Got to 24 drives, went to 48, reboot, and it reboots to the install wizard again.

    I just have NO idea how in the world he's at 58 drives without the machine going back to the install wizard.  I really want this to work, but I'm really lost as to what is so different between my article and his changes.
    Same for me, regardless of what I setup in Synoinfo.conf, even configs which should work like in the above video. Dsm always resets.
    Are you on virtual environment like me? Which dsm version do you use, maybe synology changed something in the latest updates? I am on 6.1.4

Geht windows?

  7. hallo,

    warum 24? versuchs doch mal mit soviel wie du disks in der vm hast (scsi ist ein bus und verhält sich da vermutlich anders als ein sas/sata controller der eine konkrete anzahl von ports hat) also in deinem beispiel 16

    maxdisks="16"
    esataportcfg="0x0"
    internalportcfg="0xffff"
    usbportcfg="0xf0000"

    Leider kriege ich insgesamt nur 16 Laufwerke in die esxi config - eine davon ist das Bootimage.
    Beim hochfahren mit Standard config bzw resetted config sind die 3 letzten plötzlich esata Laufwerke...
    Das Bootimage ist nicht zu sehen als ide Laufwerk.
    Ich hab es dann mal mit deinen Settings probiert, aber nach dem Neustart ist die diskstation wieder migrierbar.

    Was ich nicht so ganz verstehe ist das nachdem ich migriere und 6.1.4 wieder drauf ist, ist das einzige was in der etc/synoinfo.conf geändert ist die maxdisks = 12. Alle anderen Werte sind so wie ich sie eingegeben habe.
    Die etc.defaults/Synoinfo.conf ist aber auf werkseinstellung zurückgesetzt.

    Sollte ich eventuell mal nur die etc/Synoinfo.conf ersetzen?

    Gesendet von meinem ONE A2003 mit Tapatalk

  8. Hi,

    Da ich schon eine dieser Karte in meiner produktiv xpenology nutze will ich nicht einfach die zweite Karte dazu stecken und mein setup zerstören.

    Daher dachte ich ich setzte eine test xpenology auf mit 2 SCSI Controller und je 8 disks

    Die synoboot.img disk als edi drive

    Die Synoinfo.conf passe ich so an:

    maxdisks="24"

    esataportcfg="0x0000000"

    internalportcfg="0x0ffffff"

    usbportcfg="0xf000000"

    Also 0 esata, 24 internal und 4 usb ports.

    Wenn ich die Synoinfo.conf hochlade in etc und etc.defaults sehe ich in web ui auch alles richtig, aber nach einem Neustart ist die test Maschine im migrate Status und muss neuinstalliert werden

    Hat jemand eine Idee?

  10. As I wrote: You are able with this to access a direct console at every time. Like an insurance if things go bad. Even without loaded nic-drivers in the VM or disabled SSH.
    In the past this was the access via iLO for me as DSM was installed bare-metal on a HP Microserver Gen8.
    Is this still possible on esxi 6.5 free edition for you?
    For me a license issue is shown in the vmware.log of the virtual machine :(

    Is there maybe another way?

  11. This have something with nested virtualization, try find how to setup in vmware.

    Thanks for the hint. Although it is not "nested" virtualization how vmware calls it, you can tick a CPU option in every vm to pass down the virtualization functions to the vm.

  12. Yes I was also thinking that virtualization inside virtualization is not possible, but I don't know.

    I have similar problem on baremetal I forget to enable VT-x in BIOS. Before this I always get message about not enough RAM memory.

    Well this can't be it because if this would be inactive I could not run dsm with this loader on it.
    I want to enable virtual dsm inside my working dsm. Virtual machine manager package from synology

  14. Is virtual dsm working for you guys? I can create vms but none is starting. It always complains about not enough space. Both ram and disk space I have more than enough.

  15. One question to you guys trying to pass-through a raid controller in esxi : why?
    I simply pass the disk through with some esxi commands

    ls -l /vmfs/devices/disks
    Pick the string with t10.ATA
    And add the virtual raw device like this

    vmkfstools -z /vmfs/devices/disks/t10.ATA_____ST4000VN0002D2AH166__________________________________WDH0K40S /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/RDM/RDMdisk1.vmdk

    Afterwards you can add the disk in esxi vm settings

    You(esxi) have full control over this disk only disadvantage is the missing temperature and smart values in dsm although in console you can get that information, maybe somebody knows a workaround for that.
    A pro point is definitely no need for any drivers...

  16. I still do not see any successful migration from 6.0.2 to 6.1/6.1.1 on ESX, right?

    I have tried it by myself, but after migration and restart, the network is gone...

    Seems so, I asked multiple times already and no positive answer yet.

    (please someone tell me otherwise [emoji12])

  17. I am using 6.0.2 (currently update 8) on esxi 6.5 for months now. I encountered no issues in dsm whatsoever. All official packages run perfectly.

    I also use lets encrypt certificates, works like a charm.

    I passed 4 hdds through via rdm, not the controller (googled how to do it, started on esxi 6.0 which didn't have this functionality built in into the gui, yet) my onboard controller can't be passed through unfortunately

    Throughput is like native performance no raid in use. Same with network performance

    Feel free to ask for specifics if you want to know

  18. I had installed it with 1.02a2 and DS3617 on ESXi 6.5 and it works fine. It runs longer than 48h without any issue. Right know I switch it of because it was only a test.

    I use the pure syno img without any changes of serial or MAC.

    How did you install 1.02a2 DS3617 in ESXi? Did you write the image to an USB drive, and then boot your VM from the USB? or did you add the img as a disk in the VM? I had trouble getting it to install on my ESXi 6.5. It kept getting the File Corrupt (13) error during installation.

    Do you mean a real usb drive? That is not easily (and consistently) done in esxi. You would have to pass through the usb device to the vm to always have the same device present. Using the virtual USB device in esxi is not permanent. You would have to map the device to the vm on every boot manually.

    I personally don't do the bare metal way on esxi.

    Adding the drive is easier - or you could add a 5 bug pci usb controller card and pass it through to the vm.

    Hi since you have the same environment setup like me (esxi 6.5) and tried with the latest loader too.

    May I ask you if you are able to migrate from 6.0.2 to 6.1?

    I tried with all 1.02 loaders now and after migration the VM is not visible anymore on the network.

    What I did is the following:

    - Installed xpenology 6.0.2 fresh on test environment, gave it the synoboot.img by adding the vmdk drive (which essentially is a link to the image file) and one additional drive all on scsi

    - edit grub file in image to have the mac1 address correct, nothing else

    Then I shut the vm down. Replaced the vmdk and image file with 6.1 loader 1.02a2. Edited grub file to match same mac1.

    Turned the VM back on. Got to the migration screen.

    Did migrate from ds3615 to ds3617 with keeping the data option.

    All went through without error.

    Then the assistant reboots and no xpenology anymore on the network.

    Synology assistant tool also does not find it anymore.

    I wonder if anybody made a successful migration on esxi, yet...

  21. ...i have jun 1.02a bootloader on ESXi 6 and HP Microserver gen8 both with dsm 6.1 (DS3615xs). on both works BTRFS and both works great.

    Did you do a fresh install or migration?

    If last I would be interested in how you did it

    Gesendet von meinem ONE A2003 mit Tapatalk

    ...i did fresh. I have to re-format hdd's for btrfs support. Only in HP Proliant i have to put manual ip configuration. DHCP don't work so good.

    Could one readd the drives after a fresh install? What would happen? Loss of data?
